What I Learned about Lord of the Rings from Inventing a Language

Confession: for a long time I never understood why Tolkien had to make up a language to go with The Lord of the Rings. It felt a little bit like trying to tell an adventure story while getting bogged down in the details of imaginary corn law. But when the Daily Wire asked me to invent a new language for the Pendragon series, I instantly understood Tolkien in a whole new way. So when a listener asked me to comment on the idea that world building essentially is language building, I was all in. Here's what I learned from my first time language building, or "conlanging."

I came across this channel with this video from the mighty algorithm and I've got to say that you're doing a good job. A few warning-bells rang as you coated your language in signifiers of a certain affiliation but I thought "well maybe he's got something worthwhile to say anyway". I don't have much else positive to say aside from good luck in your career.

On the vocabulary theme: there’s Basic English (I think that’s the name). There’s a vocabulary of 100 words that cover most daily, civilian situations. Additional vocabulary is derived by agglutination, e.g. cup + board. Like Armee Deutsch and Foreign Legion French the they are impoverished as the words of love, spirituality, science, specialties of every sort are lacking.
