This is what I feel when I practice yoga. Moving through different fascia lines and building an all round strength to incorporate into my climbing. I believe fascia is the secret weapon of our human form and stoked that I've found someone who has felt the same physical phenomenon. I imagine it as energy bending throughout my body in order to travel along the fascial lines. The imagination is a gift for using fascia too.

Internal martial arts are a good place to look for fascia training. If you can get past the esoteric concepts, you may find some gems there. Ellis Amdur dives into some of this in his excellent book, Hidden in Plain Sight.

I just finished this book and Adam’s ideas are a welcome framework for fitness as I age (I’m 63). Like many people, lockdown has kept me away from the gym for a year and I have struggled to come up with engaging alternatives. I had started working on rings in my front yard, farmer walking around the neighborhood, etc., so it was encouraging to see that others, like Adam, validate this approach. I’m excited to try more of this stuff and may never bother with a gym membership again. BTW, I have the Kindle version which I like because the book is also good for looking things up-I always have it on my phone. So glad I discovered this channel recently. One more thing, I was a scrawny gay kid in 1960s Texas and shied away from any sort of sport. I remember reading Jack LaLanne’s book and watching him on TV, so I was delighted to find him mentioned in this book. LaLanne probably nudged me into a lifetime pursuit of fitness--a lot of his stuff you could do at home and I did. Full circle.

There's some deep stuff in this idea of functionality--maybe off in left field, two of my favorite philosophy texts are Bergson's "Creative Evolution" and Merleau-Ponty's "Phenomenology of Perception" which try to go at this unified embodied movement thing in different ways, arguing how unreflective knowledge structures themselves lead us toward analysis and segmentation, which is opposite from our foundational living activity. In some ways I wonder if the limited understanding of fascia was partly research bias for isolating individual biomechanical movements rather than whole-body perspectives.

I feel that I've come to understand that the fascia is incredibly important in singing. A classic singing tip is to hold your entire body slightly taught while maintaining flexibility. Rather than focusing on certain muscles, you focus on your entire body at once. Not to mention that fascia can form tight areas of its own around muscles; you can have a loose muscle but a tight bit of fascia which must be broken down.

Great to hear fascia getting some enthusiasm, I was introduced to it through Mantak Chia's 'Iron Shirt Chi Kung' who has western physiology training & internal Kung' Fu mastery, he sees the fascia as key to body / energy distribution & unification, best cross cultural explanation of the potential role of fascia I've come across, his recommended stance training is simple way of getting experiential evidence there's yet more going on with our bodies than we think. Fascia definitely needs more research, while being open-minded to older body traditions that might have discoverd some amazing correlations & then subsequently been mythologised &/or miss-understood, & now dismissed. I'd be interested in your opinion if you ever try Mantak' stance training.

Great vid fella! And great to hear your book is doing well :) You mention that people aren’t sure how to train the fascia - your description of fascia actually sounds one for one the same as Chinese descriptions in Daoist Qigong as the “Huang”. I highly recommend taking a gander at Damo Mitchell’s book ‘Comprehensive Guide to Daoist Nei Gong’. Even if it’s not your cup of tea, how he describes the building of Qi to Huang (fascia it seems to me) to muscle, is very interesting - the practices of Shaolin monks is the same really (and they are all kinds of fit!) - ref. 8 Brocades, Muscle-Tendon Changing Classic etc. Or check out Shaolin Temple Europe’s channel with master Shi Heng Yi Amazing stuff and thanks for the hard work! :)

I think you've just created a new medium: Videobooks. That's the thing about training books in general; they might be great (and I bet yours is fascinating based on this) but it's hard to visualise. Imagine a 3-hour video series that is timestamped by chapter, and a companion book. That way you can read on your commute or in bed etc. and when it comes to trying it you can watch the video to know you are doing it right.

I made a DIY HAIRCUTS KZbin playlist for anyone interested in keeping their tresses short & shaped the way they like it. Includes cutting tutorials for both men & women. There’s a little bit of a learning curve, but it’s not like anyone’s gonna see you anytime soon, right? 😉 Ideal time to practice! 👍 Supplies are cheap. Scissors, comb, clippers, cape (or garbage bag), and I find it useful to have a makeup face brush to remove those short stubbly cut hairs. Hand mirror & wall mirror (like the one you probably already have in your bathroom), as well. If you’re not confident or comfortable cutting your own hair, have someone in your household who likes working w/ their hands to watch the tutorials, and have THEM give you a haircut.
