hmmm... I have had braces for about 8 months now and I see signs of both swelling and ressesion on my bottom teeth. I found that when there is swelling, the gums swell through the gaps in the braces. I try to use my Waterpark when possible but this still happens. Is there anything that I should so about this?

What pisses me off is that not a single orthodontist told me that before I put on braces. It's all about how pretty your smile is going to be afterwards. I decided to put on braces purely for aesthetics, my teeth weren't really that bad to start off, I'm only wearing these for 18 months, but if I knew it was gonna be more trouble than benefits I'd think twice before doing this /:

@@AnAdorableWombat Flossing didn't have anything to do with that. Old ass post, but I have very small teeth overall. When I put braces, it covered most of my back teeth completely, pressing onto my gums which made them irritated and grow as a response to that. Dentist then recommended I went through a very simple gum procedure to remove excess growth, which was kinda annoying. I didn't really have a problem with that just wish I were told it was a possibility before putting on braces.

Omg I had that permanent retainer on my bottom teeth from the age of 13 up until I was 21 I think and I had him recession there and my orthodontist didn’t explain the risks of that! But I requested it to be removed because of the chemical substances in the retainer. This sounds weird but I thought I was only one experiencing this but seeing all these comments in the comments feed, I don’t feel alone, and it takes you question are dental industry. It’s like they do this on purpose to cause people problems to spend money procedures of them to make money.

@Crystal Burton if you haven’t had that retainer removed yet, I would make an appointment crystal with your orthodontist and have them remove it. They ended up doing a mold on my mouth and fitted me for that stupid plastic retainer. I’ve been wearing that stupid plastic retainer when I go to bed at night because one of my bottom tooth shifts because of less gum mass around my tooth. And the chemicals in those metal retainers are actually really unhealthy for your health. My family did some research on it, and it was disturbing.

My poor daughter gets told off EVERY time I take her the orthodontist and they keep insisting she is not brushing enough and using the green pick brush. I feel for your daughter. Im 18 now and my orthodontists assistant tells me off each and every time I go in. I brushed my teeth for varying lengths of time each day. For like 3 months I took 20 minutes 3 times a day to brush my teeth. Im tired of hearing them say that I am not doing it right. I make them bleed like they say to. I have never had a gum issue before this. The orthodontist keeps pushing back the date my uppers are to come off. My lowers have already come off and my gums are much better now. I’ve had my braces in for a while and my gums haven’t swelled. But recently my tooth along with the bracket ended up pushing up into my gum. As if I ended up breaking a part of my tooth off. Braces can actually cause gum disease such as gum recession, gingivitis, etc. I got braces 6 months ago and there is gum swelling between my bottom teeth, to which the orthodontist said was 'normal'. My teeth wasn't even that crooked (only one or two sideways) and he recommended I get them or else I may lose my teeth by 50. Thinking back on it I call it BS, as long as you take good care of your teeth you will be fine, and gum disease really isn't worth it for perfectly straight teeth, there are so many people in the world with crooked teeth and they still have teeth until their 60s, 70s and most importantly, healthy gums. This may sound harsh but I think many orthodontics motive is MONEY than health first. They will tell you how nice your smile will look but if I had known about the side-effects, I wouldn't have done it. Gum disease isn't worth it for straight teeth. I am planning to get my braces off as soon as possible, I can only warn others now, do you REALLY need braces? Do you only have a FEW crooked teeth? Can you still eat fine, talk fine and move your jaw properly? Then you probably don't need it. I would say braces should only be offered if medically necessary, but getting them purely for cosmetic (perfectly straight teeth) and if you really don't need to, may do more harm than good. Don't waste your money.

Yeah the fact is that so many children/preteens and teens get braces and they don’t really warn you or the parents of the “side effects” I got them at 11 and got them taken off at 15. After a while I told my mom I didn’t want to wear them but she forced me to wear them until my orthodontist said I was done. My teeth weren’t bad I just had gaps that they wanted to close to improved aesthetics. Everytime I went he would never give me an estimate of when I would be finished. I’m 17 now and have gum issues because of braces even though I brush and take care of my teeth everyday.

Well said. I feel like a majority of people get braces simply for aesthetic reasons. It’s understandable given the world we live in but I wish it wasn’t spoken about like some necessity we all must do. As a kid, my dentist would talk about me getting braces like it was some certainty that was going to happen. My dad was the same- only cared about getting braces for me to fix my overbite and close my gaps. Thinking about it now, I really had no issues with these. I did feel a bit insecure about it but these flaws never caused me any harm. Now I have braces on. My gums have swelled a bit and I feel like it makes my teeth look worse than they did before. I also have a few white spots as well. I would go back in time and never get braces if I could. The craziest thing is, when I was consulting about my braces when I first got them, they never spoke about the potential concerns of not getting them (which are very little from what I’ve researched). For example, an overbite could apparently cause TMJ or an increased risk of it but did they mention that to me? No. It was only about the ‘straight and beautiful’ smile I would get after all of this. Parents and dentists need to be honest with themselves. Braces. Are. Mainly. For . COSMETICS.

I had braces in highschool and actually had gum disease before getting them.. my orthodontist never mentioned it could make it way worse. Well.. it inflamed my gums so bad that my gums basically almost went over the brackets and wires (the wires cutting into my gums was so painful!). He would just get frustrated at me and basically pry open my mouth, I now actually even have TMJ because of him and my mouth locks up and is in pain a times =( Anyways.. I highly recommend to figure out your gum disease before orthodontic work.

I had braces for 2 years and not long after I got them off I had gum recession on my bottom front tooth. My dentist told me that I could lose the tooth if it gets bad enough. He told me to massage it when I brushed to try to help it but if it gets bad enough Id have to have surgery. Also everytime Ive gone to the dentist after I had the braces (That was 16 years ago now! Try rinsing every day after each meal for example, there are options like baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, salt with water. Salt and water works and it won't damage your teeth. Salt and water will be the best option .It will be more helpful too if you do it with warm water. The other ingredients use a little bit of it each time at use so that you won't damage your teeth. Don't over use ingredients either .I was diagnosed by a dentist that I have gingivitis and the gums reduced a lot trying salt with water.

I got my braces on December 2nd and today is January 22nd and my fourth tooth has been bleeding since last week around Wednesday or Thursday it always happens when I brush my teeth or when I use my waterpik which shoots water at a really fast pace and I use it on mode 7 and there’s 10 modes, and the guns only the area of that tooth that’s bleeding is red but I floss in the morning, at night and sometimes after each meal and rn I just finished eating a meal and while I was flossing my teeth that same tooth started bleeding but more than usual I could taste it it was so bitter and should I call my orthodontist about this? What should I do? Also i was in class today and it just started bleeding randomly

my orthodontist told me about it after it started, im kinda mad, he says its fine but its getting hard to clean and i need to stick up with it for more 1.5 to 2 years

Try salt and water rinse After each meal . For options ,try a little of baking soda after every meal. vinegar , hydrogen prioxide, as well help with inflammed gums .Try one ingredient that you can use for day use after every meal.

I have braces and floss for about 5 minutes then brush my teeth then use mouth wash to get rid of any excess bacteria, I do this in the morning and right before bed. If I keep doing this every day will my gums be fine?

Only my bottom front gum is extremely swollen and can get flappy, Why should I do?! I have braces and I floss Luke crazy everyday and brosh more than once and it bleeds and is still swollen so when I go to get a check up or my wire fixed I tell them n they say "oh u just nerd to floss" without even looking and I floss everyday more than once and brush more than once really good n they just won't help me n my gums are over growing my teeth

I have been trying so hard to get rid of my swell on my gums and since I got my braces , I brush my teeth every night and every morning and flush with a water peak (idk how it’s called 😂) I’m just not able to get the swell a lot down :(

The first 6 weeks I had braces, my gums started to swell. I was using the waterpik, interdental flosser, spending 2 minutes brushing my gums alone, and I was doing a saltwater rinse for a bit and nothing changed. I just went to the dentist and they said I'm not brushing good enough and now I don't know what to do. They said my gums are gonna start receding. It also takes a lot of mental power to even start brushing because of executive dysfunction. End my rant lol just needed to type somewhere

The swelling should go down once the area heals. If it doesn't I recommend going back to see your dentist.

Hi doctor. About six months into my orthodontic treatment and braces wear, I noticed my gums beginning to recede. My dentist said it was nothing and just to keep up brushing. I brush in circular motions for two minutes, three times a day, then I floss and use mouthwash. Yet my gums continued to recede badly. I got my braces off today and got to see the whole picture myself. It’s not as bad as the images you showed, but it’s close. My gums are bleeding a hell of a lot now and my soft toothbrush feels like knives even though it’s the same one I used on my gums yesterday. Am I a really incompetent brusher or is something else to blame? And now that my braces are off, will the recession cease? I eagerly wait for your response, thank you.

dark knight so the pain and bleeding went away in a week or so. To be honest, I’m a compulsive stresser so I can’t even be sure if my gums are receding, my mouth is just falling into place, or if I’m delusional. I know the line is lower than where it was years ago but I hear that your gums/teeth adjust in your twenties to their final adult position so it may just be that. Of course, not being able to get a cleaning (especially since I was scheduled for one in March) might not help but I’ve decided to just continue being as hygienically responsible as I can, and if there’s something to stress about it’s not worth it if there’s nothing else I can do to change it than what I’m already doing

This is a very common problem called hyperplasia. The gums tend to swell if someone has braces.

I cried today after visiting my dentist , I have serious gum inflammation and I am pregnant in second trimester , on my last visit they said they will cut some of it so I could atleast eat a proper meal but today they just brush it off saying it's my hormone problem cause of pregnancy so they can do nothing?????
