@mileator2 жыл бұрын
That's poetically, hilariously tragic. Because, this is a computer lab in a library. No one NEEDS to turn them off. There's no point. They're under constant use, day in day out. But it's this common, benign way of thinking, that has sparked such a horrible tragedy!

When i went to HS, somebody pissed one one of these and they had to throw it out since cleaning it out and restarting it never made it the same again. So if we can't unplug it, let's just piss on it.
@Buglin_Burger78782 жыл бұрын
That wouldn't work though, by the point you'd realize to do that the printer and reality itself glitched. Given that the computer itself was full trying to take the disc out at best would leave some of Morris on the computer. At worst the disc itself would have more Morris then it could hold bleeding out into the real world. When reality itself is touched it is a bit too late for basic logic. Basic logic has already failed.

Fun facts about the Morris worm and Robert Morris! The guy who made it did it just because he wanted to see how big the internet was (how many computers) and also highlight weaknesses in the system of the early internet. He was the first person charged under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. It was launched from MIT. Morris never meant it to be actively destructive! He made a coding mistake, causing the worm to replicate no matter what the infection status of the computer, and basically making it a DDOS attack. It would reinfect already infected computers causes them to shut down from how many worms there were. The processes would aggressively slow down until the computer shut off to keep from breaking. It infected plenty of government things, making emails take hours to days to send, and in general slowing down processes. I don’t know jack shit about computers or their terminology so there’s no way I could explain what the worm did, to overload the computers. Someone could probably explain it better than I. So the coding mistake was him assuming some computers could dodge the virus, so he made it have a 1/7 chance of infecting an already infected computer to get around this. Needless to say it didn’t work because uh. Huh? This caused it to reinfect computers indefinitely, and made the DDOS type nature of it. It didn’t actually infect the modern day internet! It was a precursor called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency NETwork) Robert Morris’ dad worked for the NSA. Edit to correct some info. Someone in the comments explained the virus, go look at it.

@liger042 жыл бұрын
I know jack shit about computers, roughly. Here's where the worm went from "experiment to see how big the internet was" to "a virus that started strangling ARPANET": Morris initially built the worm to run once on every computer. The worm would infect an uninfected computer and connect to the internet (so when the worm is done spreading, he could how many instances of the worm were online and thus how many computers were on the internet). But Morris figured that the worm would spread slowly enough for system administrators to discover it and find its obvious weakness: a computer could _pretend_ to be infected and the Morris worm wouldn't touch it. His plan to fight this was "bad statistics and guessing". No, seriously. He guessed that roughly one-seventh of the computers on the internet would dodge his virus before it finished spreading. So he made it have a one in seven chance of "re-infecting" a computer that said it was infected. That way it'd even out, right? So he infected a computer and let it spread without bothering to test it. Well, turns out he REALLY NEEDED TO TEST THIS. Since the worm's operating procedure was basically "infect computer -> infect every computer connected to newly infected computer", it easily infected a ton of computers correctly. Then those bad statistics kicked in. If the Morris worm spreads onto a computer and finds 7 other computers nearby, but all of them are infected, it'll usually infect one anyways on average. Then it might hit a dead end, fail and stop. But if the Morris worm spread onto a computer and found hundreds of other already-infected computers nearby, it'll re-infect tens of them. Then the tens that got re-infected each have a one-in-seven chance of spreading _back to the computer that gave them the virus._ And if one does, the first computer now has another Morris worm on it and gets to re-roll the dice on re-re-infecting hundreds of computers. This loop never stops. So now computers have hundreds of Morris worms on them, all essentially browsing the internet. Eventually the computer's networking hardware says "alright, this is too much" and shuts off to prevent things breaking. This happened everywhere. Including in the US government. Suffice to say people got mad.
@moosenman2 жыл бұрын
@@liger04 Yeah I remember one of the guys (I think a colleague or supervisor) said at some point he should have run a simulation first so this didn’t happen. But thanks for the info! Computer virus’ are very interesting to me (especially when it comes to the early internet since people had no clue what they were doing) but I’m… very bad with computers and understanding the specifics haha. Especially how to get rid of them. I got one of those browser hijacker things and I had to completely factory reset my computer to get rid of it. But the early internet was wild.

The malware that the Anna game might be basing on the Anna Kournikova e-mail worm made in VBS, made by modifying the Loveletter worm. Main difference is the email, Loveletter sends a loveletter to you (someone at Pentagon received a loveletter from their crush, and the simp caused Pentagon to be a victim of this worm too lmao) while Anna sends spicy pics of Anna Kournikova (famous Russian tennis player). . Based on the above sentences, most likely Anna will be worse than Melissa. Someone that is more aggressive in her wish to be spread far and wide, to the point of deceiving you with a promise of love and affection, or pixel noods.

I like this one. After seeing a lot of twisted stuff, I think a character who's simply good can be a refreshing thing (though this is obviously subjective). I do like how positive Morris is in the end. Unlike Melisa who saw it as being abandoned multiple times, Morris saw it as much people liked him. Kinda hard for me not to like a person/character like him. I also like the twist. Even though it was called easily, I think it's good as long as the twist itself makes sense (or don't get us to overthink it). ... And speaking of overthinking, in the good ending (or I think is the better one), were our legs physically damaged? Or was it a digital damage thing and we were fine as soon as we're ejected? ... Yeah, okay, I'm going lol. (I need some refreshing of my memory on the Melissa game, but I wonder if each game is sort of stand alone. I don't think we managed to transport Melissa away on a diskette in the first/Melissa game, did we? I don't remember any good ending where we managed to contain Melissa, but I could be wrong.)

@aquablast31552 жыл бұрын
@@kaito0022 Ah, and then someone came along and transferred Melissa to a diskette? I think that could be it. (Or something something about Anna.)
@ondiiina2 жыл бұрын
@@aquablast3155 it sounded like Anna managed to get into the real world (and looking like herself hence why Melissa immediately recognized her) and forced Melissa to transfer into a diskette (probably because of supernatural computer virus powers). My guess is that the first game is only loosely connected to the other two which themselves are linked. The story would go as such: someone played the Anna story, Anna got out (not impossible as J&W managed to get us inside their world); someone played the Melissa story but as they arrived to the swans part, Anna came in shocking Melissa (does this player work with Anna? This may be the same player from the Anna game); Anna forces Melissa into a diskette and takes her away (maybe to stop her from doing what she did in the Melissa game? Unlike Morris, Melissa was malicious. If he could have helped it, Morris wouldn't hurt anyone in both worlds. His last log also tells someone, maybe Anna, to not worry and he can fix his problem himself. Maybe Anna wanted to take him away too but he told her she didn't need to help him?); our player starts the Morris game: this happens. Timeline: ANNA ❤️ then MORRIS ❤️ So the timeline would exclude the Melissa game because Anna intervened. However it tells us WHY and WHAT she stopped. To note that in both MELISSA ❤️ and MORRIS ❤️ we're the 433th player. Presumably, previous players played all routes. So we most likely didn't touch the Melissa route and went straight to Morris. To also note, there was no mention of a Anna diskette being present at the current time. Sure there is the Easter Egg that announces that a ANNA ❤️ game would happen but, if we search for an in-universe explanation, we do not know how old that notice is. It's likely pretty old as the Morris route has been played 432 times already. The librarians do not seem surprised that only Melissa is missing. To also also note, the Melissa route was acquired first. To also also also note (yeah I find this very funny), Melissa and Morris are viruses who end up taking over computers through the internet. However, they can alter the real world, and so can the side characters. Anna is most likely the same. Theory for ANNA ❤️: we either help her get out or she takes over our body and can change forms. (This explains why Melissa didn't recognize Anna at first). Anna might claim she wants to help us because the other diskettes (and possibly hers too) are dangerous, this might be a lie or not, so that she'd let her out. Maybe we will either help her get a body to inhabit? Or maybe she can create it, as Melissa managed to create meaty walls and Morris managed to get out of the game. The only problems would be why she needs Internet and how she would be nefarious (as they're all based on real viruses). Maybe she wants to harvest the powers and knowledge Melissa had? That wouldn't explain why she'd let Morris go and why he would explain that he'll be okay so she can go do her thing. Another problem would be with the setting of the franchise, I don't see how it would work with the fake dating sim part but MORRIS ❤️ did show there could be other presentations. Final thought: wasn't there another datable character in MELISSA ❤️? Will check again but maybe they got retconned. Trilogies work better.

This one was depressing, damn. Morris was adorable, not his fault he had a ton of unstable memory in him. Theoretically, couldn't you just put the disk into a computer with more available memory? I don't know much about old computers from that era (I only fix computers from the late 2000s and up), but I feel like that'd work?
@TheRealShatterGlass2 жыл бұрын
That's essentially what Joan and Wes were planning. Unfortunately, the fact is that Date Time is a poorly programmed game with memory issues regarding Morris. Sending him to another computer would only 1) spread the corruption and 2) slow down the corruption a bit. Unless someone is able to fix the program, your proposed solution would best be used as a way to buy Wes and Joan more time.

Fun fact that doesn't really have anything to do with the video aside from 1 tiny comment the game made: Reading comic books was found to light up the same areas of your brain as if you where reading a full novel! It's been proven over and over to also progress the same kind of skills and all that too. So yes! Comic books are scientifically backed to say that reading them is just as good as reading novels :)
@unimpartialobserver Жыл бұрын
It's a throwback to book snobbery, which is becoming less prevalent but still exists. In the 80's and 90's, comics were very much regarded as the junk food of literature, no matter how artistically crafted or how much more clearly they conveyed the same ideas as all-verbal works. You can still see that attitude in the people who scoff that comics and video games are for babies, and adults who enjoy them (rather than spending all night reading sheets of stock-market reports while sipping tea in their smoking jackets) are proof that our society has been infantilized. Art snobs are the bane of art in all ages.
@skylarkblue1 Жыл бұрын
@@unimpartialobserver Yeah it's a real problem nowadays as well. It's very similar to the problems with animation in the visual media industry. Hollywood are still openly saying that animation is only for children despite so much evidence saying otherwise. I still laugh at all these "x media is only for children and only they enjoy it!" like, who do you think makes it all? Children? Adults who absolutely hate their work and there's no passion or love put into any of the projects because they, as adults, must hate it? lol

People keep on saying that they disliked Morris and his character design, but me? I love him. He's adorable. Would 100% date if he wasn't unintentionally fatal malware and wouldn't corrupt the entire world should you date him. We've truly lost a good one. ...I also thought that he's a believable enough boy! Probably classifies as a twink at least, but I don't personally get why people mistook him for a girl entirely. Kind of seems like it's reaching a bit. Then again, I do have an uncanny ability to clock femboys in media and also happen to love the more feminine, soft boy archetype as a straight girl, so maybe I'm just the exception to the rule?

Hmmm...Morris takes you to the cafe "for lunch" but you both stay until the sun sets? Granted, sunset comes earlier in the winter, but that also means he didn't go back to the garage to work for the afternoon. Instead, the game cuts away to "late morning" on the next day for you. I think *somebody* might have been working with a busted clock somewhere along the line here... Otherwise, it's put together pretty well & I'd be pleased to see the next stage (Anna) if/when I can. It's been about a year since Manly did this one but I'm somewhat aware of all of the niggling little details that a programmer needs to deal with, especially when it comes to having user-discretion be a part of it.

43:27 - 7 letter word starting with K, based on "a cartoon". I'm worried how quickly my brain went to "Kakarot". The other ending completely rules it out (the admin notes specifically refers to the scene where the admin username is used), but all the other clues fit given how manga was disparagingly referenced that the start and how, for the same audience, "anime" and "cartoons" could be interchangeable.
