I grew up shooting guns in rural Utah. They are powerful weapons, for sure. I have thought about owning a gun, however, my mental health is not going to be good enough to own one safely. In Canada, if you have a history of suicidal depression, you can own a gun but you need to leave it and its locker at a friend's place (as long as the friend as a license as well) and the friend must be the only one holding the key to the locker. Vaush is right about the neighborhood defense thing. The reason the Spanish Civil War was a Civil War instead of just a slaughter of the left was that a good amount of people had guns & fought back against the coup attempt at the beginning. Problem was not quite so many privately owned their guns (some of the anarchists in Catalonia did but by no means all) so they had to try to get them from government armories to fight back. It ended up that in places where the government opened the armories, the coup failed, and where they didn't it succeeded. This shit matters

I would be wary of befriending Doomsday preppers. While they stock up on resources, many of them are shady or have questionable beliefs. Some of them seem to actively want a doomsday scenario to happen, and many of them plan to only shelter their families and reject literally anyone else, hostilely if necessary. Also, while in theory it's ideal to have firearms for defense, the reality is that not everyone has the time and money for neither training nor the gun itself and the legal processes therein.

Heck, in the situation Vaush described they are more likely to defend the neighborhood even if they know you're a commie. After all, they live there too.

Underrated comment here, there is definitely a pathology behind preppers. I live near Portland, and a few years back there was a trump rally/protest right outside my apartment in the parking lot across the street. One thing i noticed was that almost every car had a gun on the rear window. I had my gun at this point but i kept it hidden as i didn't want to start anything with anyone. Also, the apartment complex i live in is very ethnically diverse, as there's a lot of Syrian refugees living here and a lot of Ethiopian families here as well, so they knew for a fact that they were doing this rally thing to spark racial hatred among the maga protesters/rallygoers. (I say it was a rally but I'm not entirely sure what it was. All i know was that there was a lot of trump flags and a lot of guns and a LOT of noise) Edit: nothing ended up happening except people from my apartment complex looking on in fear because they thought the trumpists we're there to hurt them, and aot of the trumpists throwing out racial slurs at the Ethiopians living here, and screaming at the rest of the people here for allowing "dirty immigrants" to stay here. But eventually they left and no fight ended up breaking out, and no one got hurt. That was the only trump rally type thing that's ever happened right by my apartment complex

Back in high school I had a debate about whether or not guns being freely available were bad, i was for gun control and stricter laws. A large part of the Pro-Gun argument was that a “good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun”, I challenged that logic by stating that we couldn’t know who was good or bad until that person started using that gun for its purpose. These days I’m seeing more “bad guys with guns”, and while I hate to say I agree with the pro gun argument, perhaps they were right. What’s even funnier is the people I was against are now devout trumpists, probably the crowd of people that we can fit squarely into the “bad guys with guns” category.

I knew she wasn't going to shoot her sister, and being a knowledgeable gun enjoyer I understand that the employment of a gun in any way immediately puts at risk any bystanders, so I quickly figured by best bet was to employ Joseph Joestar's secret weapon. I Gumped it out the back of the property faster than you ever did see, over two barbed wired fences and UNDER a third. Who the FUCK puts barbed wire UNDERNEATH a fence? Whoever put the fences up next to the highway in Dade City Florida. So basically her sister commandeered the house because despite being given a court order to appear for an AGGREVATED ASSAULT charge and NOT having her name on any deed, bill, or lease, the cops figured they'd let her stay... which is nice. We are now stuck in a much less favorable living situation until she either pays rent so we can afford things or gets evicted so we can move back in. I'm in Canada. Carrying anything for self defense (carrying anything for the purpose of using it as a weapon) is illegal. The rule is looser in the home. Still we have something colloquially called the law of escalation, self-defense needs to be "proportional". If they come at you with a knife, a knife or lesser weapon is ok but you can't respond with a gun. In fact, hand guns are illegal to carry anywhere but the home and the range, you require another permit to transport the weapon to the range and you must take a reasonably direct path to the range if the gun is on you while travelling. Other self defense tools are acceptable only if you can justify their use as tools ie: a chef can carry a kitchen knife to and from work but not on a walk through the park during their day off. It's very contextual. It's important to never say a particular item is for self-defence. it needs to be a walking stick that happens to be ideally weighted, or a handy pocket knife you typically use for cutting open boxes and letters.
@mazazon
@mazazon 2 жыл бұрын
Though in my investigations of self defense laws in Canada the #1 advice is overwhelmingly. Be aware enough to avoid violent situations, RUN if you fail at that, and if you somehow end up in a situation where running isn't an option... A weapon is better than nothing but still, use it to make an opening to RUN.

Men who own handguns are eight times more likely to die of gun suicides than men who don’t own handguns, and women who own handguns are 35 times more likely than women who don’t. It's also worth mentioning that successful gun suicides outnumber every other method of suicide combined despite not being the most widely used method. Intentional drug overdoses are the most widely used suicide method but are only fatal 3 percent of the time. People who attempt suicide and survive generally only make one attempt and never attempt again. 85 percent of suicide attempts with a gun are fatal. Also it's worth emphasizing that suicide with a gun is irreversible once the trigger is pulled, while other common methods can be reconsidered and stopped partway through and help can be sought. Suicide is an extremely impulsive action the majority of the time, any amount of friction you create between impulse and action saves lives. I think the vast majority of people should reconsider owning a gun.

@@craigstephenson7676 Suicide is an impulsive behavior, I think almost everybody gets suicidal (or violent) thoughts at some point in their life. With a gun you can take that impulse and cause irreparable damage to yourself or others in seconds, whereas with other methods of suicide you generally need to plan it out, have a great deal of resolve and it's generally able to be reversed partway through. And you might be able to say you're mentally stable at the point of purchase, but is that going to stay true for the entire period of owning the gun? You losing your job or going through a divorce or some other hardship could lead to you having thoughts of killing yourself and if you have an easy method of doing it you're dramatically more likely to go through with it.

Guns are bad. They lead to killing and hurting, because they are tools designed to kill and hurt. But knowledge is never bad. Knowing how guns work and how to shoot is good. Being prepared for emergencies is also good. There are emergencies where guns can be used for good, despite inherently being bad. Owning a gun is therefore good. But the enthusiasm for guns and the gathering of guns must be measured. Once one starts stockpiling guns it turns from reasonable preparedness to proliferation of killing instruments; Owning tools is fine but being a gun nut doesn't help anyone. I am a gun owner, but I like to think I'm the responsible kind. Almost every conservative I work with has a ton of guns despite being worse at aiming and responsibility than me, and almost every liberal I know that wants guns just wants the ability to feel powerful despite not knowing the first thing about guns. I try to learn from their negative examples.

Interested to know V's reflections on the suicide rate related to guns after reflecting on data that surprised him. How would he go about addressing that sociological concern? Widely known that the majority of suicides are impuslive acts and access-to-means is one of the most powerful risk factors for suicide. Significant drops in suicide rates overall when high content carbon monoxide gas stopped being piped to people's homes in the UK and when car exhausts had a catalytic converter mandated by law. Similarly when it was made ilegal in the UK for medications to be sold in bottles rather than blister packs. Surprised by the overall approach in this vid but sounds like a view based on the expectation that gun control could never be enacted in the US?
