The real problem is people putting so much merit in the word "cringe." It's just a word. It doesn't mean anything other than, "I don't like it." In other words it's another way of saying, "I find it offensive," or, "I find it shocking," or, "I find it politically incorrect." It's a way of saying any of these three without sounding like a whiny infant that's throwing a temper tantrum over something as petty as unpopular ideas no less. It doesn't work on me though. I've seen through the bullshit spin a long time ago.

I hate cringing. I'm so self-conscious and I hate it. It's exhausting to be so judgemental and I'm aware of it happening and I try to stop my head from thinking or feeling this way but growing up in an environment that likes to gossip and likes to ostracize, it's a hard habit to kill. I hope it becomes the norm to be more accepting with authenticity, along with being able to tell what's authentic or not. Great video btw, love the editing and visuals. Like that part about us having different versions of ourselves in other people's head segment. Short but straight to the point.

@@Anniecurls I think you have the right to judge people when they're being annoying or rude, especially when it affects you in some way. But if it's a passing and harmless thing, and makes you feel reactive, I really think it's better to reflect and learn why you would take those things personally. I only have a vague understanding of the context you're describing, but it seems to me you're referring to specific people or behaviors you've experienced. But honestly, you seem judgemental. As long as it's harmless and not directing any harm towards anyone, I think 'act normal' is a blanket statement for censoring your authentic self, people should be able to be cringe, weird, whatever nonsense in their own space freely. who really cares, our time is short, have fun, be loving, be eccentric, be cringe! I do have people in my life I think are attention seeking but to me I don't think it's in bad-faith, nor do I give in to it, it's like a middle ground of I don't care, I detach myself from them if it gets to me too much. I'm much more at peace when the way others act don't get to me, but in most cases I don't judge, people are still humans at heart

I've been questioning lately what "cringe" truly means, and if it's really such a bad thing. It's a label that you throw around when you feel uncomfortable, but when you stop and question why you feel that way, it's hard to think of a proper reason ("it's cringe because... it's cringe"). It always felt like to me that that judgement came from a place of ego. I don't like it when I find myself feeling negatively about someone because of something I perceived as "cringe". I'm tired and I've got a bunch of thoughts in my head now and I don't know if anything I said makes any sense. But basically, I found your perspective interesting and validating. What I got from it was: being afraid of being seen as "cringe" limits our development and potential, and being negative towards other people because of something we perceived as "cringe" limits our connection and understanding of others.

I think this resonates a lot with me or others who don't feel like they "fit in" with the world at times. Authenticity is something I really valued and felt I could even detect when I was younger, and I understand why people would have issues with some forms of expression, etc., but I do agree that we could all try to be a little more empathetic. I'm a highly thoughtful and emotive person. I think a lot about what matters to me, and I tend to write essays, and well, on the internet, people don't seem to like to read, even a few paragraphs. I get it. I shouldn't be as wordy, and that's something I acknowledge I can work on, but that's more of a skill issue and less of a personality issue I'd say. In other words, it hurts when I write something that sounds highly emotive or personal to me and someone calls it "cringe" or simply chooses to think I'm being unauthentic or get likes or something. What lead to people just assuming the worst in others, especially those they don't know? People do things for a reason, and I don't think it's fair to assume they do it from any intentionally negative place right off the bat. Authenticity for me is just being able to step aside from what others think or even re-evaluating your own perspectives and biases and getting to your core values, needs, desires, and goals. When that comes out as expression, some may judge, even if it's perfectly okay, ethically and lawfully. It's one reason why people are afraid to dance in front of others but may love to do a funny dance at home when no one is around. It really doesn't hurt anyone, just presents itself as a target for someone to reaffirm their own ego.
