I wonder why you would want to discuss anything with such a pompous fool as Darth. Regardless, in his lead question he asks, "What does everything ultimately depend on for its being?" and thereby commits a fallacy of many questions. He first needs to ask, "Is there some unique thing that everything ultimately depends on for its being?" Before that, he needs to clarify what he means by "ultimately depends on". Is it a causal thing, as in that which caused something is the ground of its being? Or perhaps he is asking about constitution, as in a table depends for its being on the wood from which it was made, which depends on the cells which compose the wood, which depend on molecules that make up the cells, and so on? Or is he (most likely) alluding to some unique metaphysical relationship which is neither causal not constitutive (and which therefore we have no empirical evidence that such a relationship can or does exist in any case)?

Darth: (10:03)"He says he denies that any metaphysically intelligible statements can be made. Now is that statement intelligible?" Yes, and false. But it happens to be an epistemological claim, not a metaphysical claim. (13:05) "The word 'meta' means above, and 'physical' of course means physical. It means that which is above nature, or that which ultimately accounts for, or is the foundation for that." Darth's etymology is completely wrong, in addition to being contradictory ("that which is above" and also the foundation"?). They Stanford Dictionary of Philosophy says, "The word ‘metaphysics’ is derived from a collective title of the fourteen books by Aristotle that we currently think of as making up Aristotle's Metaphysics. Aristotle himself did not know the word. (He had four names for the branch of philosophy that is the subject-matter of Metaphysics: ‘first philosophy’, ‘first science’, ‘wisdom’, and ‘theology’.) At least one hundred years after Aristotle's death, an editor of his works (in all probability, Andronicus of Rhodes) titled those fourteen books “Ta meta ta phusika”-“the after the physicals” or “the ones after the physical ones”-the “physical ones” being the books contained in what we now call Aristotle's Physics. The title was probably meant to warn students of Aristotle's philosophy that they should attempt Metaphysics only after they had mastered “the physical ones”, the books about nature or the natural world-that is to say, about change, for change is the defining feature of the natural world." Thus "meta" in that context, means after, not above.

At 15:55 Destiny says, "he allows himself to be circular but he doesnt allow anyone to be circular." This statement speaks volumes. It shows that Destiny is not understanding the nature of paradigm-level debates at all. They're Worldview VS Worldview. One system of presuppositions VS a competing system of presuppositions. All worldviews use epistemic circularity (this is easily verifiable and known by Epistemologists across all ranges of worldviews) and *the entire point of what is in contention* is: Which worldview is using epistemic circularity in a non-fallacious manner. It obviously can't be true that ALL worldviews are engaging in fallacious circularity when appealing to their worldview's ultimate standard for truth. If that were the case, then NO worldview would entail that debate is possible in the first place. So, what's in contention is determining which worldview uses NON-FALLACIOUS epistemic circularity. But Destiny completely ignores this and just views it as exactly the same when two people operating through two competing worldviews engage in epistemic circularity. It is not the same. Their ultimate standard for truth is obviously different. One person will be engaging in fallacious epistemic circularity and the other may be engaging in non-fallacious epistemic circularity [if they're operating through the Biblical worldview] Not all circularity is fallacious. Not all circularity is equivalent logically. There are non-fallacious forms of circularity.
@Oneocna
@Oneocna 9 күн бұрын
No there aren’t, and the debate can occur if you agree on epistemological justification, the debate can’t occur (or be concluded) if you don’t, darth knows this and is why he won’t let people say their ej is reality or any other religion because there’s no way to verify one ej over another You seem to think biblical justification is non circular but it still is because it has to be observed and proven by a non epistemological explanation (personal perception) The verification is the epistemological justification that you need proof for but your proof is grounded in the verification you are trying to prove It is circular explain how it’s not
@lightbeforethetunnel
@lightbeforethetunnel 9 күн бұрын
@Oneocna You started with, "no there aren't." So, you're affirming that "all circular reasoning is fallacious." How did you determine that universal claim is true? With circular reasoning? See the problem here?
@Oneocna
@Oneocna 9 күн бұрын
@ no because we either agree that logic determines they are circular or you disagree that logic exists and therefore by definition you are being illogical, and you would have to say you hold an illogical stance
@Oneocna
@Oneocna 9 күн бұрын
@ this would be true only if you ignore tautologies. Within any given world view you need tautologies that conform to logic and unjustified circular axioms are the bases of all beliefs because it’s the limit of epistemology, not because it’s an affirmative of a universal objective truth. The limit of tautologies is that they themselves can’t be proven within a system even if it’s true, an example of this is goldbachs conjecture
@lightbeforethetunnel
@lightbeforethetunnel 9 күн бұрын
@@Oneocna You realize how you're not actually making arguments but instead you're just giving strings of unsupported assertions. For example, you asserted, "unjustified circular axioms are the basis for all beliefs" You gave no rationale for how you determined this is true, so it's a bare assertion fallacy, meaning I shouldn't even need to be countering it as it's an assertion not an argument but I'll explain to you how I know it's false regardless (something I don't even need to be doing as all fallacies need to be tossed as invalid arguments). Anyway, its not true because: You are conflating axioms with presuppositions. A common conflation people make. Axioms are unjustified by definition. Presuppositions can be justified with transcendental argumentation, a deductive form of justification. If you were to say that ALL presuppositions are necessarily unjustified, do you have any idea how absurd of a statement that would be? A presupposition is literally just any propositional content that is assumed to be true prior to argument, without explicitly saying so. So, you can take any proposition and turn it into a presupposition by simply presupposing it. So, asserting that all presuppositions are necessarily unjustified is equivalent with asserting all propositions, about anything at all, are necessarily unjustified. Which is absurd.

Correct me if I am wrong but the biggest difference between Popper and Khun is in their view of scientific progress. Popper saw it as a rational, evolutionary development while Khun saw it as a revolutionary development( series of revolutions which are changes in the paradigm).

@davidspencer343 Not joking, even remotely. Darth is not someone that I personally like and he is wrong about a lot outside of Presup. But Presup remains objectively correct regardless of whether or not a person that isn't likable argues for it. That's a factor that I can tell a lot of atheists aren't getting in these comment sections. They personally dislike Darth and that's the primary reason why they conclude Presup is wrong. They deny this, but it easy to deduce that this is the motivation behind their comments and objections regardless. They are apparently just not consciously realizing what their own motivations are.

@davidspencer343 All worldviews include epistemic circularity (which means circularity is engaged in when appealing to the ultimate standard for truth within the system). All worldviews use epistemic circularity and this is very well known within Epistemology, meaning it's not a disputable or controversial point. So, objecting because the Biblical worldview uses epistemic circularity is not a valid objection. It's equivalent with saying, "Oh yeah well your worldview is structured like a worldview too!" What Presup is proving is: Which worldview uses epistemic circularity in a non-fallacious manner (because it is appealing to the correct, deductively justified ultimate standard for truth) Presup proves the correct ultimate standard for truth is the Biblical God deductively (meaning it's a literal proof of this)

Hey destiny I was listening to one of your shows where you were talking about something along the lines of "knowing" things based on perceiving them. I'd love to talk to you about Edmomd Gettier and the epistemological theory of how we "know" things. Gettier was a very famous epistemologician that essentially flipped the field on its head with a 3 page paper he published while he was a professor at wayne state university, where I was in graduate school for philosophy.

You guys think that Darth has a "script" but the reality is... it's simply not possible to rationally justify any worldview other than the Biblical worldview. And the reasons for this & the ways to showing this is the case will be similar against any worldview. If he's using a script, this would just mean it should be even EASIER for you guys to actually defeat him within the confines of rational debate (fallacies/sophistry not being allowed), since you'd already know what he's going to say. So why can't you defeat Presup within the confines of rational debate? Why? The criticism that the Biblical worldview utilizes circularity is very ignorant. ALL worldviews use circular reasoning when appealing to their ultimate standard for truth, so that isn't a valid criticism against any of them. Epistemic circularity is a property of ALL worldviews, by necessity. The fallacy is on YOUR end to argue as if only the Christian worldview does that. This is epistemology 101 material that all ultimate standards for truth require circularity, guys. This was informative to listen to how Atheists talk when Darth isn't actually there to defend himself. The entire mood is completely different. You're all very confident about how dumb he is (for stupid reasons like "he uses circular reasoning to defend his worldview") but as soon as you're actually debating Darth and he can defend himself, the mood completely changes. If he's "just mentally disturbed" then it should be a piece of cake to defeat his position. *why can't you?*

Also, him having a script doesn’t make him easier to argue with. He doesn’t argue in good faith. If you don’t answer a question the way he likes he’ll keep on bombarding you with the same question until you submit, he’ll talk over you, deny any answer you give with “that’s not an answer,” and eventually he’ll just mute you. Better to not engage with a brain dead, knuckle-dragging moron like Darth to begin with. I’m glad you’re impressed by him though

The point is that just because you have AN explanation for the way things are doesn’t make it the way things are. The position of “I’m not exactly sure why we and the rest of the universe exists” is inherently different from “god is why the universe exists” and does not require proof in the same way. The Christian worldview attempts to assert knowledge of things the secular worldview does not.

36:20 The problem of induction really isn't a problem. Mostly because induction is rarely used in isolation in the first place. The other type of reasoning called deduction also has problems without induction. I personally think the problem of induction is a favorite of people who have a pet metaphysical claim that's being challenged by induction. On the other hand normal people switch between deduction, and induction constantly to suit their personal ends, and probability is not a solution to induction, but a part of it, and probability assists deduction.
