I’ve been a fashionista since the 90s, so my early “influencers” were my own friends and peers and my favorite artists from music, visual, or even athlete’s. Although the latter are probably the worst at fashion lol. And so, I think many young people do and should dress to impress their peers as I was doing at the time. Exploration is key when dabbling in fashion. But I think it’s important that once you mature and know what works best for your body type and know what YOU love to wear, you can totally grasp your own unique style and you stop dressing to impress no one else but YOURSELF. Very early on, I observed what others wore and I was a stickler for NOT wearing what the next person is wearing, for the sake of striving for uniqueness. Which is one reason why I follow many current influencers. Not because I either agree or disagree with their takes, but it keeps me in the loop of whatever is trending and keeps my mind open to what I might not be used to. With as much experience I have, I’m still reluctant to try new and different things. So getting input from all the several influencers out there keeps me intrigued. I give in to some trends here and there and avoid others not because of trying to be different. But because I simply love a certain look from said trend or modify the idea to make it my own. I think loving what you’re wearing is the most important thing rather than what any influencer puts out there. Wearing what you love and walking out in confidence is the best style anyone can wear. And I encourage everyone to do that. Dress on!

Rant incoming: I think its very hard to be completely original, if not impossible. But I think you can grow a sort of awareness of different opinions and ideas and choose the ones which you relate with. I think this probably comes with age a time too, you watch fashions and politics wax and wane and through this see what sticks for you. I think the state of fashion right now highlights the worst parts of the internet - the increase of consumerism which feeds on insecurity. I also think a lot of people choose to be willingly ignorant and choose the consumerist route because its easer. You can overcome your insecurity easily by narrowing your lense and denying other opinions other then your own - buying into that trend and letting it define how you view others and yourself. What is really hard is acknowledging all the opinions and choices and trying to forge your own way. This is hard because you suddenly become aware of how small you are and how many other ideas there are out there - it also takes fucking ages unlime trend hopping. You start to realise that you opinion is so insignificant. This may he daunting but I think you can find a sort of satisfaction in it. But also fuck it why do you even need to do this, think about this. Y not just blend in and be the NPC - is anyone gonna really notice or care. Just fucking do what u like ig

Everything you said is true but I'm hoping for some one of the fashion KZbinrs I follow to mention like whenever you see posts/vids online of people with unique or interesting outfits there can be a lot for comments just saying the most generalized & negative comments about people they don't know. Which can cause any fashion newcomers to be scared to wear what they want because of all those comments

I could be wrong in saying that people are afraid of making mistakes and that the "trust" we have for influencers is coming from a place of (as you stated) "this person is reliable (massive following), hence they must be right in their decision/opinions" and that's why we trust them. We believe they know more than us and by accepting and following their ideologies towards something, we will receive the same validation or fulfillment they get. Thanks however for making the video JQ, will most definitely be more skeptical nowadays. Also hope you're doing well :)

This is genuinely no hate, but Its interesting that the video started by talking about what makes a good speaker and I'm half way through the video and the script is so wordy and strangely written it's hard to follow or connect to. It made me feel like I was having a stroke. Lots of "for"s and "if anything" and general filler phrases which, while arguably better then constantly using 'like' and 'uhm' make the narration very unnatural and less digestible. Just a bit of constructive criticism
@averagemale9401
@averagemale9401 Жыл бұрын
You must be new this guy doesn’t have a script he speaks raw. He probably should write a script in some areas of his video since he ends up saying certain words a lot of you pay close attention. I think his vibe is for it to be as if he was just talking to a friend and not so professional. Ya know not so serious.

Idk if this is entirely relevant, but I also would clarify that content creators are also a product of the system, which is society. Trends are a part of culture. Harry Has has blown up but he had like 10k subscribers when I found him. I just really liked his take and delivery on fashion. Turns out, that was a part of the growing trend in minimalist fashion (eg Harry was hyping up Sambas way before Jerry Lorenzo). So content creators ended up getting big because they aligned with what was growing popular among the masses. But why do things get trendy? I think it’s a blend of things. Content creators, politics, influential figures (eg Kanye), objectively nice things (Jordan 1s), modern trends in media (eg Y2K and 90s trends). Yeah idk all that shit. Thanks for making this video and creating this space for discussion in the online fashion community. Appreciate you

the funniest thing i've encountered on mens fashion youtube so far is one of the young fashion influencers recommending abercrombie as an affordable brand that has reinvented itself into a staple of menswear over the past decade, and an older menswear historian saying abercrombie was good in the mid 20th century when it made high quality sports and hunting clothes before pivoting (in the 80s or 90s?) to cheap teen fashion. (no shade to any teens reading this. but please, for the love of god, buy vintage and thrift instead of new cheap crap)
@almondmelk5830
@almondmelk5830 Жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right, shops life Zara and H&M tend not to be good quality. But neither is the vast majority of vintage stuff. I think some shops like uniqlo, cos and arket - although maybe a bit 'boring' - offer phenomenal quality items which are timeless. They offer a great base line for a wardrobe. Vintage stuff is good for stand out pieces but very hard for everyday stuff - if you can sort through the junk. Also even uniqlo and brands like that have some fashiony pieces like the J+ collection with Uniqlo. But ultimately it depends on what you want. Perhaps you don't care about how you look - then Abercrombie and Fitch is good. Or maybe all vintage is you look. I dunno just be aware of the different options

This video’s message is really beyond fashion. Keep in mind that when you consume media online, the platform you’re using is financially incentivised to keep you on there as long as possible. A reliable method of doing this by promoting controversial and reactionary content. Unfortunately, many people simply accept the information that’s put in front of them as long as the rhetoric is convincing enough. Not only that, but users can get so convinced of the narratives that are delivered to them that any media promoting an opposing view is quickly dismissed. A prime example of this is the current propagation of anti-trans media by right-wing commentators, who’s blatant lying ends up consumed by people who otherwise would have no interest in LGBTQIA+ issues, and have no other sources of information on such topics to compare. It is more profitable to have people believe what they want to believe instead of the truth. The algorithm is specifically designed to give you what you want, not what you need. More people need to wake up to the highly immoral tactics that social media platforms use to keep people engaged. As long as people need to scream and shout at each other, social media platforms will continue to monetise the time you spend doing so.

I get the point for basicly following your guts. But i think, you had to have certain amount of knowledge to make a good decision/judment on for example: fashion. You cant be a dumbass following your guts judging wether the piece of garment good or bad, because theres a standard. Thats why listening to influencers (or anybody who has more experience in the fashion field) can be important. to me, the most critical thing is the ability to defferenciate an opinion (or biases) and a facts.

Totally unrelated to the video but it was crazy to see how much the video opened up as soon as you loosened up and transitioned from the scripted to unscripted section (I presume). It was almost unengaging hearing you read from the script (made obvious with the looking over). This was even more apparent when you talked about prolific speakers in history: you talked about how they spoke well while you yourself didn't speak well. Then, boom, you loosened up and I'm reminded why I like your videos. The monotony in your voice disappeared and your charisma returned.

Not tryna stab at you but at 7:03 when you made remarks about pickups/haul videos, I feel like regardless of the items that you’ve bought being secondhand/your closet being a smaller curation it still propels and influences others to seek out clothing that you find interesting (personally) simply based off your influential power (KZbinr with 90k subs) like, I get what you meant as in unsustainable consumption like $1,000+ hauls every other week but still, influence is influence in my opinion and you can’t down play another and boost your own. Exaggerations, man is not influenced directly by fashion vloggers. You click on what you are interested in already and make an ideological decision with more entropy. For many of course it is to stay with the crowd or some group. But likely it is only to hone your concepts for later considerations, or tickle your sensation. Psychological causalities are much more complex than that they could be reduced to a salesman vs. individualist dichotomy.
