I’m going to respectfully disagree. As A new hire builds seniority, control by bid system is improved. As a young aviator working your 1st jet, you are really in the catbird seat with the coming retirements. My recommendation is if...you love to fly...it’s worth the sacrifice of personal time during the first few years. My situation is lead pilot on a Gulfstream aircraft. I dont have hard days off where I can plan family events in advance. I’m fortunate to have few short notice Callouts. Others in my part of the corporate industry are not so fortunate. Each flight department situation is different. But the aircraft owner I work exclusively for is a pleasant man, pay and benefits are good and I fly to some interesting places. Family is supportive. Always a new challenge, never boring. After 43 years, I still dig it when we close the door and push the start button....:-). More advice since I’m on a roll, eat healthy, stay away from the airport food, get sleep and drink lots of water. Cheers...

I'd like to see a video detailing how/if you get paid when the following happens: 1. Maintenance delay 2. Weather delay 3. Crowded airport delay (long line of planes ahead of you to take off) 4. Cancelled flight due to weather I'm sure it depends on whether you're in the cockpit or just at the airport waiting, so please answer based on multiple scenarios. I'm curious because as a truck driver, you basically get screwed (no pay if the wheels aren't turning) whether it's in or out of your control. I'm just wondering if it's the same with pilots.

can't speak for pilots, but flight attendants at most US airlines are only paid when the boarding door is closed. Pre-flight, boarding, deplaning, airport sit time (time between flights), and delays while in the airport are not paid. Delays spent in the plane on the tarmac, such as weather delays or sitting in a de-ice/traffic line is paid by the hourly rate. To make up for it, though, most FAs get per diem that is paid per hour spent away from base, red-eye pay (on some airlines), international pay (even from US-Canada or Mexico), as well as extra pay if they are the flight leader (head FA).

I have been wanting to be a pilot since I first went on holiday at age 3. I started watching you when I was 9, you encouraged me to do my first flying when I was 10. Great video. I like that your content is both informative and based on reality. Your life, with all the variance it offers, boils down to your professional agreement. Passengers rely on you for things they understand like showing up on time, and then 100% implicitly trust you to do everything else that they don't understand and have absolutely no control over. Brady LaPLante, You actually don’t really need 1500 hours like most airlines say, if you are experienced enough and they really need pilots, they will take you in with much lower hours.

@@gabrieldeollos3290 Hey, you're 14. You have your entire high school life to make good grades. Also note, many schools with aviation programs aren't extremely selective. A 3.1 GPA has a good shot at getting you admitted, the main thing you'll be sacrificing is scholarship money. If college ends up falling through, there are several non-academic programs to get you from beginner to instrument rated in not much time at all. Even with the Air Force route, it's not a super bad idea. Being in the Air Force doesn't mean you're spending your time bombing Iraq with F-16s. It may just mean flying C-130s to different bases. Sure it's super regimented and strict, but it may be a very useful life experience, and you could learn much more than you ever would at your Embry Riddle or UND.

I listen to Ohare atc almost two hours a day (I’ve probably heard you!) and they do a fantastic job. I’d like to think I know some of the stuff at the airport. I had to “lol” at your Canada hotel experience. This past March (SNOWY MARCH) I was in Ottawa and the fire alarm went off around 2am. I literally got my coat, my passport, and my rental car keys. I ended up sitting in my car for an hour while the fire department cleared the building. It was miserable.

Swayne, how do you keep your uniform looking so nice? Mine aways looks like crap. I commend you for that. I’ve been in and out of O’Hare hundreds of times. 1. Never stop moving. 2. Don’t hit anything. 3. Don’t touch a runway without permission. 4. Listen really fast and if you can’t read back fast don’t bother. Everything else is gravy.
