Something worth mentioning: The characters who played these cards also played decks that saw a lot of play IRL too, some still to this day. Odd-Eyes player used Performapals and Pendulum Magicians. Dark Rebellion player used Phantom Knights. Clear Wing player used Speedroids. I don't need to mention how busted Terrortop and Taketomborg were in Zoos. Starving Venom player used Predaplants. Ophyris and Darlingtonia is still p the best generic fusion search combo in the game, really. Whoever adapted the Arc-V cards honestly did a damn good job at giving the decks presence in the real game.

Vrains pretty much did the same thing. The Protagonist- plays Code Talkers (the least competitive archetype of the character decks), however, his signature monster is Decode Talker (and power ups including Accesscode and Transcode) and boss monster is Firewall Dragon. The Rival- Plays Rokkets (a big part of the Dragon Link Strategy) and boss monsters include Borreload, Borrelsword, and Borreload Savage Dragons. fun fact if you never watched the anime : the guy that uses dark rebellion is the same one that plays phantom knights. Which explains why the card feels so at home with them. Good old time where Arc-V put a lot of thought in card design and made duels and plays that were competitive. This guy is also the reason phantom knights have the rank up launch spell, so you can use it's evolution, dark requiem dragon, a rank 5. And, unfortunately, the reason you can turbo azathoth. Annnnnnnd, according the new banlist, is now banned. goddammit, azathoth. Same goes for clear wing synchro : the guy that plays them plays speedroids, which is why speedroid is turbo level 7 synchros : the deck.

Odd Eyes's anime version didn't have the search effect, and the double battle damage only works while battling level 5 or higher monster. Dark Rebellion's anime version requires only 1 xyz material, but can only work on level 5 or higher monsters. Clear Wing's anime effect isn't a once per turn. Starving Venom's anime effect let's it gain the attack of all special summoned monsters your opponent controls, and deals damage to the opponent equal to the attack of all monsters destroyed by it's last effect.

In the anime, I believe Starving Venom dealt burn damage upon being destroyed equal to the destroyed monster's attack and Dark Rebellion's effect only used one material to use. As for the archetypes: Odd-Eyes: Played by Yuyu who used Performapals/Magicians/Odd-Eyes Dark Rebellion: Played by Yuto who used Phantom Knights Clear Wing: Played by Yugo who used Speedroids Starving Venom: Played by Yuri who used Predaplants

Here's all relevant effect changes from the anime: Dark Rebellion's effect only cost 1 Material, but the gain was lost during the End Phase. Clear Wing's effect had no OPT limitation for some asinine reason, despite Yugo saying it did in its first appearance. Starving Venom. Hoo boy. Its Materials didn't need to be on the field, but the ATK gain only triggered if they were. Said ATK gain was the *combined* ATK of all your opponent's Special Summoned monsters, instead of just one. Starving Venom negated the effect of the monster whose effect it stole, which is kinda silly. When it died (even if it wasn't Fusion Summoned), it wasn't limited to just Special Summoned monsters, and burned your opponent for the combined ATK of all their destroyed Special Summoned monsters.

To be fair, this stopped being a relevant problem starting with ZEXAL (unless it happens in Vrains), but I completely agree with you; Duels in GX and 5D's could've been vastly different if "Normal Summon in Face-Up Defense Position" weren't a thing the anime did. I honestly think it's really interesting to hear how anime cards actually work and fare in the tcg, or just archetypes from the shows in general. I would say I'd love to see you talk about all the cards of the 'Odd Eyes/Pendulum Dragon' 'XYZ Dragon' 'Synchro Dragon' 'Fusion Dragon' mini archetypes, as these four are a part of them, with Odd Eyes in here being part of two. But that would likely be like an hour long cause MY GOD are there a lot of 'Odd Eyes' dragon cards. The other three aren't quite as loaded in comparison though.

There are a lot of retrains and upgrades to these cards that are really good too. You already mentioned the Supreme King Starving Venom or whatever its name is, but you can't forget about Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. It's not super easy to get out, needing a non-tuner Synchro monster, but I remember playing it a lot in my Blue-Eyes deck, with actually a pretty cool combo where I'd summon Odd-Eyes Spirit Dragon, tribute it to summon Michael the Arch-Lightsworn, banish a card with its effect, then use it with my abundance of Level 1 tuners to summon Crystal Wing. It's been a while so I don't remember exactly but I remember that card having some insane protection effects that basically just shut your opponent down. I also used to play an Odd-Eyes deck (not super competitively but still decently strong) that had this awesome retrain of Odd-Eyes called Odd-Eyes Arc Pendulum Dragon which lets you Special Summon an Odd-Eyes when another Odd-Eyes is destroyed, which was great because it reacted to opponent's plays but could also be proactive when you use effects like Odd-Eyes' search effect or Sky Iris, basically allowing you to swarm the field really quickly. The one I really liked to use was another retrain from the manga, Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon, which was pretty good for OTKs, because if it inflicts battle damage you can burn your opponent for 1200 for each Odd-Eyes in the pendulum zone, which I usually had two of. Plus Odd-Eyes Lancer Dragon which is a 3k beater, can easily be SS from deck or GY with Arc Pendulum, and can protect your other Odd-Eyes cards if you want to keep them around. I've never been into the actual competitive scene so I don't know how exactly they did at tournaments but when I was playing online I was winning a fair amount.

another easy combo to get starving venom out is with summoner monk and keeper of dragon magic. Use summoner monks effect to discard a card and bring out keeper from the deck, then discard anothet to use keepers effect to search a polymerisation. Easy synergy in elemental hero and masked heroes.

Fun fact, in the anime, all of the dimension dragon’s effects only work on level 5 or higher monsters. This was changed for Dark Rebellion and Odd-Eyes for obvious reasons. Starving Venom’s effect when it’s Special Summoned works on all Special Summoned monsters the opponent controls, and also when it’s destroyed, all of the opponent’s Special Summoned monsters are destroyed, but the opponent also takes damage equal to all of the monsters who were destroyed’s Attack. Dark Rebellion’s effect was also changed, it could be used twice per turn, because it only needed one Material, however it and the monster it targeted had their attack returned to normal at the end phase.

5D’s did it better than anyone else. if you saw 5D’s, absolutely nothing got you more hyped than watching guess summon Majestic Star Dragon, Shooting Star Dragon, Stardust, and especially Shooting Quasar Dragon. With Quasar specifically, Yusei didn’t summon him until his final duel, when his back was against the wall, and it was the most powerful thing he had ever summoned. Summoning quasar is incredibly hard as well, as you have to base your entire deck around it. When you finally do summon it it feels like an accomplishment, and likely just wins you the duel. It’s exactly what it was in the anime.

A quick review for the archetypes that are related to its respective Dimension Dragon: Performapals: Clearly the ones from the manga are bad. Were meta when paired with Performages. Phantom Knights: Favorite archetype of the four. Were meta when paired with Burning Abyss. Speedroids & Predator Plants: Speedroids are pretty much a successor to Vechicroids. Predator Plants are fine. Both are used as a two card engine and had one of their cards limited at one point.

Clear Wing and Starving Venom have a hilarious interaction in the TCG. If Clear Wing is already on the field and your opponent has a Lv5+ Special Summoned Monster, you can Fusion Summon Starving Venom. Then trigger its effect to target your opponent's Special Summoned Lv5+ Monster. Chain Clear Wing to blow up Starving Venom and gain 2800 ATK (2500 + 2800 = 5300). Starving Venom's destruction effect will then activate, wiping your opponent's board of Special Summoned monsters. If that happens to be ALL OF THEM and your opponent can't counter you, they're forced to take a massive hit right to the face and just sit there and let it happen :^)

This will always end up being he case, unless all of the cards are forced to the same level, in which case it doesn't matter at all what you play. Unless set rotation is in effect, which means that you don't need to account for older cards when you design new cards, which opens up more breathing room (scapegoat for example)

@@SuperDarwinFAN 'bad cards' are, in my understanding, cards that neither have a powerful effect themselves, nor have an effect that has positive interactions with other cards, which can emulate powerful effects together while not having an overly high combined cost. This is partly why old cards don't always get powercrept out, since if a new card intreduced that has a good interaction with them, they may wind up being very strong since they may not be as restricted as newer cards, since they weren't as hard on that back in the day. For example, ancient fairy dragon was fairly mediocre, but AFAIK it was banned because it's field spell effect makes field spells with on activation effects stronger, while also having an extra normal summon like effect. Considering how brilliant fusion was used almost exclusively for just the extra normal summon, it was fairly valuable. And since the game shifted to making a strong board turn 1 from the grind game it was back then, the battle restriction was also kinda nerfed.

You could use Staving Venom's effect copier if your opponent had an Armytle out so SV attack points would go to 10,000 and your opponents Armytyle would have 0 attack due to it's ability

Actually, Starving Venom would GAIN 10,000 ATK, putting its total ATK to 12800.

Actually Armityle only has 10,000 on the owners turn meaning it would have zero attack to copy. But since SV only copies the name and effect not attack it would get the 10,000 atk boost instead of gaining zero atk

If you can get two level 8s, you make a rank-8 xyz, that you rank up into number 95. 95, for cost (which means its effect can't even be Ashed), sends 3 dragons to grave to banish opponents monsters from the deck. The two dragons you always send are Arkbrave Dragon and Amorphage Goliath. Arkbrave special summons a level 7/8 dragon the next standby phase after it was sent to grave. So you can special summon Goliath in your opponent's standby phase. Goliath's monster effect is that neither player can special summon monsters from the extra deck (except Amorphage but no one plays them)

TheJaredPunch the greedy venom fusion dragon is the only one that I would deem not good only on the fact that it’s to hard to summon vs it’s syncro/Xyz counter parts. Even the odd eyes cards and upgrades in all of its summoning mechanics were not only easy but practical in a game. But a side from that most of them are great.

Know what bugs me? Odd-Eyss has 2500 ATK...Dark Rebellion has 2500 ATK...Clear Wing has 2500 ATK....Starving Venom has 2800. Its the ONE exception. ;-;
