As a Company Commander in Germany circa 1984 (former NCO), I had a soldier that wanted out so bad that this person admitted to eating his way out and did it by eating everything in site. Wish granted to be discharged for being grossly overweight. Long story short is 10 years later while back in Germany I ran into this person now happily married to a German and all excess weight was gone. This person was a very good soldier but wanted out to marry a German and live there. That's commitment.

Sometimes the soldier life gets to people. I did 10 years multiple deployments and taskings but just burned out...started getting depressed and gained weight. Had a severe case of PTSD as well. Nearly 11 years later, I can smoke the PT test, better shape than 80% of soldiers in now, make 6 figures, have a wonderful wife and kids...couldn't be happier. I thought I was a lifer, but 9/11 soldiers were used and abused extensively. We were treated like garbage.

When I was in, it was a bit different, everyone to include my self would be pissed off and complaining about the army, our unit, and constantly talking about our exit date coming up, then the moment our date would get close the fucking S1 guys would come to us and be real nice, they would ask us over to their office to talk to us about our process of getting out, after leaving the office I would catch my self smiling and missing time... then I would notice what just happened.... I signed enlistment papers....... I don't know how I managed it but I finally got out after 12 years... now I miss it and hate civilian life.

When I left I started working as a software engineer. Then one of my buddies invited me to lunch (reserve unit) so I met up with the old unit in my work clothes and my Citizen's watch. One guy joked that I was making $80/hr and the 1ST SGT tried to be polite but he looked frustrated so I didn't talk to him. I actually liked the people in my unit so I didn't say anything bad, but I could tell there were re-uppers wondering why they didn't ETS. Anyway, for my first full time job I had people in the military as job references, and they make the best references. So, don't burn your bridges as you have no idea when you're going to need them.

Retired after 22 years and while there are some aspects of military life that flat suck, most of the times I had are fond memories of the men I served with. We all shared in that suck and made the best of it, carried on regardless of what came next, and tried like hell to rise above the bullshit. I give thanks to having a senior NCO corps when I was a green ass newbie that took me under their wings and gave me tough love to get my shit straight, and god for giving me the mental capacity to understand what was going on.

Almost five decades ago I was the same way. Remember being processed out on the USS Saratoga. Chief NRC gave me the whole spiel. I was nice. No, chief, I said, I'll pass. Two weeks later I'm sittin' in a blank apartment thinking "fuck." . . . Maybe ten years some ago I watched a former shipmate retire from the USNR. Envied his ass big time. . . . 'Course the job I had is gone (I was a radioman, which doesn't exist any more) and the tech is all changed (don't even ask) and although what I learned in the USN paid the way for the next forty years, there are days upon days when I wish I'd stayed. I'd have retired an RM before RMs disappeared and I'd have still had time to spend what I knew about that before the tech changed in civilian life too. . . . Yep. Thems was the days, thems. . . . But . . . I ain't stupid enough now at 74 to think that I would want to be in the USN of today. It was a lot lighter back then. Way lot. But I loved that job. And I was fuckin' good at it.

I saw guys who wound up like the Private. I'm not one of them. The Army and I weren't a good fit, and the separation was mutually amicable, but I knew guys who got out, and inside of three months, were standing at the recruiter's trying to get back in. Some people can't cope with military life, some can't cope with civilian life, and some? they just flat can't cope.

Those enlist at 18 and out at 22 with no plan a head, no money because they burn their bonus on new car and burn the rest on booze when they hit 21, etc. the list go on. I submit a note to XO on how fellow NCOs should take care of new privates (especially finance) but no one did anything... They only worry about sharp charge then take care of fresh privates.

I have my DD-214 copied, sealed and duplicated 5 times in case shit happens. Then got my butt called back 2 years later due to that you got to look at those contracts more closely when it comes to reserve duty. LOL I remember getting that phone call at University and man it was not a good night that was for sure, the GF was looking at me funny due to that she didn't understand what was going on. Her uncle who was in the Army explained it to her. I was an USAF scrub and I was back in uniform for a year and got promoted even. Then when I walked back into civilian world everyone looked at me like I had just walked out of a time machine.
