I used to think Anakin's acting was cheesy, but taking in the fact he was a slave with very few moments of social interaction or initiating conversation, and his only way of life was the Jedi code, it makes sense why'd he come off so emotionless, abrupt, and awkward. Still, even it fits his character, it's not the most pleasant thing to watch.

I've always thought his awkward behaviors made sense tbh. Like a slave turn powerful warrior who was picked on by other Padawans kinda did serve as an explanation to his personality. I feel like cause it's starwars people just assume every jedi and warrior is cool and stoic but Anakin genuinely is more interesting to me with his cringe behavior.

Without the missing dialogue, Padme's line about "our mentors" seems a little out of nowhere now. Also, on Tattooine, while the edits make the scene a little awkward in some ways, Anakin seems far more conflicted in this version. In the original, the Anakin who practically boasted about killing Sand People and hated Obi-Wan was obviously headed for a fall to the dark side. Lucas should have really done a better job with his script and direction in creating a more conflicted Anakin.
@TrueMohax3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Lucas never was the greatest with dialogue. Just ask Mark Hamill, I’m sure he’ll recite an embarrassing line.
@MrZackavelli3 жыл бұрын
"Lucas should have really done a better job with his script and direction in creating a more conflicted Anakin." Another armchair internet critic that likely doesn't know the first thing about filmmaking. Yeah, it sounds like he's boasting because Anakin fucking hates those sand people. They tortured and murdered his mother. Did that part fly over your head? Watch the movie again. Anakin never says he hates Obi-Wan. He says he's the closest thing he has to a father multiple times. Also, it's not like Anakin saved Obi-Wan's life multiple times, right? No, Anakin blowing off a little steam when his mother literally died in his arms a few hours ago and venting his frustration to Padme totally overwrites that, obviously. Ep. II is supposed to document the friction of Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship and the growing pains of entering adulthood. Every teenager goes through a little friction with their parents when they enter their teen years and want to leave the nest and spread their wings. This is one of the main themes of Ep. II. It's in the next film that Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship does a complete 180 and they make the perfect team.

@@acevarios6073 That still partially comes back to George in the end. He's a great writer with some amazing ideas, but there's a good reason why his editing team got so much of the credit for the OT and it's because he struggles, by himself, to get those ideas explained well and tends to go overboard in areas. I would have loved Padme’s lines to be fixed too. But to also add more human movements to the scene of after he kills the sand people. She wouldn’t go “You can’t be all powerful” “It’s human to be angry”, he’s mother just died!! Padme should be nearly speechless, she could only mutter out his name and reach out with her hand for him and then when he says that he killed them all her hand stops and slowly goes down in shock as he slumps to the floor and cries. If you can do that man then you’re a king.

I'm curious what the removal of the "they're like animals" lines feel like in context with of the rest of the movie and RotS cause the way its been presented here loses some of the emotional weight that's needed to understand Anakin's from a characterization point of view. Growing up in slavery is a big part of Anakin's perspective of the world, so losing that moment where he removes the humanity of the people that killed his mother in a fit of emotional anguish leads to a bit of devaluing of Anakin's bitterness and subsequently lessens some impact of his turn. In a way, removing the deeply personal feeling from the moment does make him more of a Jedi at the cost of making his arc of falling to darkness work less. That's my perspective on the matter, though. Outside of that, scenes flow exceptionally well without the removed dialog, and the removal of the Obi-Wan jealousy stuff in a way adds more gravity to the Clone Wars themselves as they take their toll on the characters. Really adds another layer to the "perfect storm" elements of Anakin's fall.
@ABitofOrange4 жыл бұрын
Anakin should have confessed slaughtering the sand people to Owen, not Padme. This leaves her able to logically reject his apparent turn to the dark side, believing all the while that he is good, and it makes sense of Owen being concerned that Luke has "too much of his father in him."

I feel on the fence with this. Whilst it wasn't the best dialogue written, it was an attempt to make Anakin not fully grown up in society (he is still 19), he's been raised being told what's best for him and hasn't really matured or made his own choices thanks to the Jedi and because of Obi-Wan - Padme even says "All mentors have of seeing more of our faults than we'd like". The whole "jealous of Obi-Wan" scene is fine to me - really, I don't understand the removal of it: all these suppressed emotions he's had growing up with Obi-Wan training him for his (Anakin's) own good to be a Jedi have just been unleashed like a broken dam due to losing his mother, someone he vowed to free when they parted ways 10 years ago. A young adult having an emotional breakdown after 10 years of keeping it to himself really isn't going to see logic or reason.

I recommend CinemaWins. That should clear up any misunderstanding of characters. You can say he’s a bad character until you have lived his life, without 3rd person omniscience!! Growing up a slave to the Hutts, then served as a Jedi, told to suppress his emotions (which is impossible by the way), and being denied acknowledgement and advancement despite the hard work you put in and the public opinion you receive!! Half your life a slave and the other half being told to control your emotions at all times, following a strict code of conduct. CinemaWins explains all this and more!!!

I know you found some of Anakin's moments here cheesy and I'm guessing you're a MASSIVE Obiwan fan since you won't allow him to say a single negative thing about Obiwan. The problem is that these things are needed, regardless of whether you like them or not, Anakin shouldn't be a smooth-talking charmer because he's been raised by the Jedi, who've strictly prohibited attachments of any kind including romantic. This would be like expecting someone to be a fluent Russian speaker despite only having been there for two weeks. He should be stumbling over his words, saying weird things he didn't mean, and having awkward pauses when trying to think of something to say. But even worse is the removal of his criticism of Obiwan, this is CRUCIAL for Anakin's fall to make sense. If he idolizes him and doesn't have any negative words to say about him at all then why wouldn't he confide in him during Episode III when he is becoming so overwhelmed and stressed, especially since Padme asks him to do just that several times? If he and Obiwan have this perfect relationship that doesn't make any sense, but on top of that Anakin does and should think that Obiwan has become jealous of him. No, it might not make sense to you but it does make sense to him, remember, Anakin is the most gifted Jedi in history with more force potential than even Master Yoda himself, this means his training has gone very smoothly (at least his physical training anyway) and these abilities have made him arrogant (Obiwan even mentions this to Mace Windu in Episode II). Because of this and the fact that Obiwan won't let him move on to take the trials (the final test a padawan takes before becoming a Knight) he honestly feels that Obiwan is holding him back, and all because he's become jealous of his power and potential. Of course, this isn't true, he won't let Anakin move on because he knows he isn't ready yet but Anakin can't see that, hence why they constantly argue and butt heads despite having a clear respect for one another. Anakin was never supposed to be a perfect Jedi who falls, he was a very flawed but gifted Jedi who fell because of both his own arrogance and weakness as well as the Order of Jedi who failed him.
@jrv73464 жыл бұрын
Part of Anakins downfall is he is a bit irrational, unpredictable. It makes sense with his personality, he would see Obi Wan's attempts to train him as suppressing him. Fail.
@Young.Supernovas Жыл бұрын
I would've edited it to include the bit where he contradicts Obi Wan about the investigation. Without his awkward compliments, it characterizes him as a lovesick 19 year old pretty well I think. 19 is an age of rebellion, I mean realistically. I also wouldn't have touched the tusken raider scene. I think it shows a bit of Vader in him. I think that without all the complaining about Obi Wan in the rest of the film, it comes off like, well, an emotional lashing out and it feels more earned. Negative emotions often only come out at times like that in real life. Of course Obi Wan isn't really jealous. Anakin doesn't need to be correct about that for it to be good characterization.

@JDH1092 жыл бұрын
While I love this idea, I feel like there should be a certain amount of context taken into consideration with these sort of edits. The scene with "He's holding me back!" In particular is very important. Anakin's mother just died and he felt powerless to stop it. He's been told by everyone, including his master, that he should be one of the most powerful Jedi. And yet, whenever he told them of his visions of his mother, they all told him to right it off, and this didn't just come from the council, it came FROM Obi-Wan, the one Anakin looks up to most, who he feels is supposed to have his back. All these feelings build to this scene where Anakin has lost his mother and wants someone to blame. In his rage and sorrow he blames his mentor, because who else is he supposed to blame? In his mind he should've been able to save her easily, but who kept him from doing so? Obi-Wan. So who does he direct most of the blame for his lack of power to save those he cares most? Obi-Wan. And don't forget that he begins his rant by saying how much he respects and looks up to Obi-Wan, as if trying to reason with himself and not feel this anger. He knows deep down that he's being irrational, but he can't help it, he's lost his mother and took out all his rage on innocence. However, almost right after this, the moment he hears Obi-Wan Is in trouble, he doesn't hesitate to go after him. That, I always felt, showed that despite his rage, he truly couldn't be angry at Obi-Wan for this. It shows even years later that out of every Jedi, Obi-Wan Is the only ones he feels he can vent his frustrations to about the council, even though Obi-Wan is on the council himself.

Ah no. While yes, the scenes may play "better" on a superficial level, the whole point is Anakin is an awkward teenager being raised by a strict order. Anakin is on a tragic arc, not a heroic arc. I'm not much a fan of these edited conversations. Like the Dark Side, they are unnatural! Anakin is talking about how great Obi-wan is, only for Padme to start talking about teachers ability to find faults in their pupils, to which Anakin sit's exasperatedly. It doesn't make sense with the context of his conversation with her in the edit. The conversation about his mother's death also fails where the unedited version succeeded, glimpsing into the start of his megalomania, ranting about what he desires, power to control death itself. I also feel it completely neglects a lot of what Lucas was going for with Anakin in this film. Anakin went from being an abused slave, told he's a nobody, talented, but a nobody nonetheless, to being told he's the Jedi Messiah. He went from being a nothing to the greatest thing ever within a matter of a few hours. It went to his head and he is frustrated that even though he's been told he is so great, he's being held back and he feels like the galaxy owes him, that the rules don't apply to him. When there are setbacks, he lashes out at those he felt wronged him. Just my thoughts, don't let me persuade you away from your vision!
