HEY! Update on the Prussian blue: The color is back! All signs of fading have vanished. Thank you to 'finessence808' For commenting about the way Prussian blue changes in UV but then returns to normal after a while of being away from UV. I had no idea, but after looking at the swatch again, it’s true. Maaagic.

I was thinking that these paints would definitely fail the lightfastness test, since they are student grade, but I am so, so happy to be wrong! Go Miya Himi gouache! Thank you Zaccura for doing this test. I never would have done it, because I had become convinced that the quality of the paint would be cheap with no lightfastness at all. I am so happy to have been wrong! The fact that some of the paints did fade doesn't worry me. They are colours that I can either mix myself, or buy a tube of the same colour in a more expensive brand instead, if I really want to. Problem solved! I am so happy with my Himi gouache, and the more I use it, the more I learn to love it. I also really love your playfulness on your channel Zaccura, and I love your pretty name. Watching your videos always makes me smile. God bless you and all those you love. Have a great day!

Thanks this is super helpful. I never intended to use these for commissions only in my sketchbooks for practice but they still turned out well for just a month. Purples and reds are usually the least lightfast from my understanding and I think prussian blue normally has a huge shift that returns to normal after being out of the sun but don't quote me. I'm excited to have these come in. Thank you!

OMG Looks like you’re right about the Prussian blue. I just looked at the swatch again irl and BOOM the color is totally back. That is so weirdly cool, I had no idea! Gonna add a pinned comment now thanks to you.

Most pigment enthusiasts say that Prussian Blue really comes back to normal after some time being out of the sun and even faster the darker the environment is (like a drawer that isn't opened often)

I wouldn’t sell work with the other colours after just a month lightfastness test. Some colours change dramatically at the 6 month mark, some take a year. The red and darker pink and greens looked on their way to a fast fade to me. Helpful to see the test so far though 😊

Prussian I think is the colour that fades in light but regains colour in dark. So it perks up after hiding out in the dark for a bit

I really appreciate the practical approach to lightfastness and am looking forward to your expanded opinion on it ^^ Also there's the option of using a UV Protection Coating on the finished piece which _should_ change the outcome. Haven't tried yet as I'm very new to coating (or rather actually finishing work lol). Also also not sure how the coat would work with water soluble paints now that I think of it. Probably not a good idea 🤔
@ChemiGlowAngel4 жыл бұрын
For water soluble works it's best to use a spray varnish/fixative over top instead of a brush kind. I think once you do several coats you can then cover with a brush kind without disturbing the art.
@Zaccura4 жыл бұрын
So glad you liked it vidie! And I've also never tried using UV coating on gouache (or any paintings actually). Might work, but I'd probably test on a sample piece to make sure it doesn't cause any damage. ;)

Hi, just curious about this, i wonder if it's ok for me to ask, but why do you tape over the gouache instead of cutting them and storing the paints you intend to compare inside a cupboard or sth to remove them completely from light? because you use white paper to test these paints, and I would assume the uv lights from the sun still somehow bounces over to the backside of the paper and affecting the compared paints? because I saw a girl testing some marker brands and she does it exactly as you did and found that a pink shade she covered and uncovered both have the same problems with fading, even when she's already covered it with a very thick black paper.
@Zaccura3 жыл бұрын
You know, I frankly never though to cut the paper in two and store the other half in a drawer! You're right, as long as the paper is exposed at all to the sun, then there will be some affect. The piece of chipboard just helps show the difference. But I'll probably be trying that cutting-in-half method in the future for new paints! Thanks for sharing

hii, i got a question! i just got the palette and i wonder if i can keep it on his side when the jellies are opened?
@Zaccura2 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend against leaving it on its side or else the paints may spill and make a mess. I've never tried it for exactly that reason, but idk, maybe if the lid is tight enough and the paints are dried out a little, it'll be fine. But I definitely wouldn't store it on it's side for a long time.

@@aminaa5824 no,it don’t works like that.those who create paints can give guarantee on paints till they open,nobody can give any guarantees afterwords,cos nobody knows what water you’ll use,99% of water has bacteria and will grow mould on any type of paints that keep wet..so water quality is the must with gouache and watercolours,only then you’re paint will stay healthy

The title is almost click bait, this doesn’t show actual lightfastness at all. 1 month for lightfastness testing is almost nothing… 6 months is a minimum, 12 is better to get an even amount of UV light over the different seasons. Some paints don’t fade at all within 1 month, but significantly after 6 months. Just 1 month of light doesn’t tell artists anything about whether the paint actually will hold up for long time display. I am disappointed.
@Zaccura Жыл бұрын
I appreciate this feedback. This was my first time doing a light fastness test, and my knowledge about different pigments behaviors was still limited at the time of making this. I have a different light fastness test (for a different gouache brand) on the window right now with plans of keeping it there for much much longer than I did here in order to get more complete results. Perhaps I will do the Himi test again and create an updated video in the future. But for now I hope the knowledge of which colors are especially fugitive in this set are helpful at least!
@edzejandehaan92654 жыл бұрын
Not really surprised, especially violet, and orange pigments in cheaper sets are fugative. I don't buy paint without pigment numbers, then you don't have to do time consuming lifghtfastness tests yourself. Btw don't understand the hype around "jelly" gouche. I think it's a very unpractical way of packaging paint, I prefer the oldfashioned tubes.
