also I'm pretty sure the concept for these attacks, holding down b for an altered special with the mario bros, was first introduced in an old but great mod called Brawl Minus!

I neved understood why mods always remove Mario instead of i don't know, make his 64-Melee Tornado down b his mid air down special, and his grounded down special would be flood, so that the Down Special from 64-Melee and the one from Brawl- Ultimate could be in the same moveset

Nice. Kinda mixed on the idea of slowing down and buffing up Mario's power. On one hand, a stronger Mario is pretty cool and does normalize him as the go-to beginner character. On the other, the modern mobile Mario is also cool and it does help separate him from Doc.

And also what makes it great. Seriously, if we make it slow (He isn't even fast to begin with) we get Dr. Mario, a very bad character who struggles to do anything.

Mario sucks tbh, I've tried him and his combo game is trash in HDR ( this happened to other characters too, like Kirby ), he can't do upair stair combos and can't even kill whit up-b or dair bruh. They hadn't to "balance" Mario in the very first place, to be honest.

Because HDR is literally basing most of their changes off of PM 3.6 and melee, and most of their changes were not actually beneficial to the character unless they were already a top tier in melee.

Not to nitpick, but you forgot to mention that doc also has his up-b cancel from melee in hdr. It’s a 2 frame input now instead of one frame, still pretty hard to do but god damn does it lead into some cool stuff!!

Context: I main Doc in melee, and even though I love his style in Ultimate, I usually abstain from playing the character in favor of Inkling and Young Link because they're way faster. HDocR looks like a nice blend of Melee, PM and Ult that has everything I find good in the char.

I was more worried about Luigi having basically no air mobility horizontally now. It was bad enough in vanilla which led to him being zoned really hard, now it's even worse!

@@Shmicah1235 If you wavedash into a jump you can get some crazy shit. Using ledge cancels and wavedashing off of ledges so you don't have to go all the way up from your jump takes this character from a bag in the wind to a high speed butter shoes maniac

Mario can't do half of the shit he used to do thanks to the nerf in his mobility, wich sucks even more than it should thanks to the brilliant idea of making the pace of the game faster And also can't even kill whit up-b or dair, so even if you try ( wich in most cases you will not be able to thanks to the way that up air works now ) to do up air stair combos you will get nothing from them, so Mario is exaggeratedly nerfed and whitout even a reason. For sure not "overpowered".

I'm of the opinion that adding confirms to a move that didn't have it before takes away from the game element of actual game design Using subjective terms like bad or good to describe efficacy undermines the spirit of development. More specifically, what goes into the properties of a move once it is designed If something is effective, more power to it. Is it game oriented though? Fox's shine has always been strong, but just because people have accustomed themselves to it's perfect optimization doesn't make the move what it is. It just so happens to be a decent tool that plays well at high levels. The game element is that it can be used to deflect object collisions and can't do so indefinitely The best example I can think of is honing a skill like a hat trick or a 3 pointer. A person can make the object of their skill to master their efficiency and timing, then be pretty poor coordinating with their teammates. Meaning that as much as they understand one aspect of the sport, they fail to understand that the objective of the game is teamwork All of this to say that for a game that wasn't programmed to give Mario a fireball that kills, adding one because it seems charming confuses the objective of set play. How many times can you do that per character before diminishing returns set in? If people wanted to play that game, they might have fun with custom moves. So without some sort of set up that provides an in for that sort of feature to exist, it really is all style. You could have a window where his flaming hand offers a knock back boost, or upon launch the rate of residual damage has a coefficient. Those sort of mixups seem to agree with the game as designed. Essentially the more wildcard things you add, the more people have to keep track of variable properties How many mods need to exist at one time before people are allowed to say "well that's just not my cup of tea" So then people split into camps or folks that either only play Ultimate or only play Melee. And try to get people to defect just so that they have someone to play against

Edit edit: I did like the vid though :) Edit threeeeeeeeee: you also missed that mario has walljump out of up B and doc can press down back during grounded up special to cancel it before it leaves the ground. Ediiiiiiiiiiiiit fouurrrr: lugi's standing grab was nerfed in range but buffed in startup/endlag to go with his wavedash. He can bob snd weave with his absolutely insane WD so having a faster grab is actually a net buff despite the range.

@@MrGameguyC The reason it is a better gameplay decision is because it allows you to have a combo game that is less skewed toward early percents. That's because the way knockback works mathematically in Ultimate is logarithmic rather than linear. Combined with more movement options and a much stronger DI, it creates a more freeform combo game. That's the philosophy behind it, at least.
