His father was terminal here, he needed a kidney transplant as his kidney was in stage 4 failure, he was on the transplant waiting list but of course someone has to die with a donation card and has to match, James and his siblings were tested and not a match. James and his father were high ranking officers in the British army, James a captain and his father a colonel and never show any weakness or emotion, so this video really is remarkable and heartfelt. After this video was released a distant cousin with the same name Charles Blount as his father, was tested and a match so he was a live donor which is so brave and wonderful His father is still alive.....

“I’m not your son, your not my father” …. I love how he adds this as the buffer , which we all use in order to survive the suffocating loss of a father. Then he sheds that emotional armor and, unabashedly, bares the truth that a child will in fact always be a child to a parent … and his father will always be his Daddy 😢😢😢 love your reactions btw!

The song didn't mean he was rejecting his father in any way. He was saying they were grown men saying good bye. Fathers chase away the monsters when we are small. Now that his father was terminal it was his time to chase the monsters away. That was his father who had stage 4 kidney disease. They recorded this in one take. When they finished, everyone in the studio was crying except his father. His father asked why they were crying, that he was still there. After the video came out, a distant cousin came forward who turned out to be a match. His father had the transplant and is doing well the last I heard. Don't be afraid to show emotions on camera, it is a sign of strength rather than weakness.

In this music video, James was literally saying goodbye to his father. Both high ranking military men, who show no emotion due to their jobs, this was James way of saying goodbye without actually saying it. Thankfully a donor was found and Mr Blunt Sr is doing very well ❤

James and his father were both military officers. The lines "im not your son, you're not my father, we're just 2 grown men saying goodbye ", came about whenever they parted to go on tours of duty, and this video was done in ONE take, as it was too emotional for both of them. Lovely reaction, never be ashamed of showing emotions. We are all mere mortals. Greetings from London UK xx

Since I haven't seen anyone mention it, the line "I'm not you son, you're not my father. We're just two grown men saying good-bye" was what the father said to James in reverse when he was deploying while they were both in the British Army (more colonel to Lt./Captain). That's why he put it in the song. There was no friction between them or anything, it was just a saying between them that meant something different.

Yes. It is his dying father that he loves. Two grown men saying, "Goodbye." I cried watching this song being sung 😢 because I was 19 years old when my father died. However, the song can be any relationship and loss. We all have faced loss.

Hey bro, great that you did go ahead and post this! 😊 The backstory to this was that Jame’s Dad had received the diagnosis of Stage 4 Kidney Cancer and during this horrifically difficult time Jame’s sister penned a poem which James took as the basis of this song believing that they were going to loose his Dad. Mercifully and miraculously though the docs found that a distant relative was a perfect match for Mr Blunt Snr, he received the donated kidney AND SURVIVED!! 😊 On a related note, teenager Iam Tongi entered 2023’s American Idol and sang this at his 1st audition as a TRIBUTE TO HIS DAD who had sadly passed away. I think that audition went viral, Iam progressed throughout the competition reaching the FINALE where he got to duet the song WITH JAMES!! And, he won AI!! If you can summon the strength to watch it, it’s incredible, though heads-up, have some Kleenex at hand!

My relationship with my pops is two parts, from childhood until 15 I was scared of my father as he was strict and hardly ever around due to working overseas 8 months at a time. Seemed to me he would look for faults with his kids the 2 months he was home and I was glad when he would go back to work. Then he asked me to come with him to Japan for the summer, I did and got to know the man that I only new as my father previously. From 15 to 21 I joined him living in Japan, Norway, Singapore, and Brazil from as short as 2.5 months to as much as 1.5 years. I knew the man that was my dad, we shared everything, likes/dislikes, talked music(he was a Buddy Rich guy and I like Carl Palmer), his relationship with his father(I just thought I had it hard) and was with him as he took his last breath holding his hand and chasing his monsters away. I'm so glad I took that opportunity and recommend to anyone, if at all possible, reach out and get to know the man that is your dad.

What I love most about this song is that it means something to everyone because we all have fathers, but beyond that, it resonates even if you had a terrible relationship with your father since it describes beautifully how much a father should mean in a child's life. So for some, the emotion you feel is one of regret and loss, but a deep longing for what might have been.

@@oblioarrow567 The situation between fathers and sons in the world today is truly tragic. Im blessed (cursed?) to have several friends who are exemplary fathers and treat their sons with compassion and affection. I once watched a video about the actor Justin Baldoni describing his relationship with his father, and my heart ached and still does. What a difference could be made if this could be the way for us all.

@@oblioarrow567If he was different, you and your brothers would not be the same men that you are today.. That is the thing about tragedy. You can choose to let it overwhelm you, or you can use it to build yourself up higher. At least you had 5 others that he could take it out on. 😅 I only have 1 sister, so I always chose to be the one that would take all the weight on my shoulders. I'm thankful for my upbringing, and the man it made me. Shoot straight and true. Love yourself.

A lot of the meaning in this emotional song is its Britishness - stiff upper lip quivering. "Just two grown men saying goodbye" is so British. But saying "daddy", reading stories and "chasing the monsters away" is the emotion and feeling behind that façade. James and his Lt Col father - dying of kidney disease - are both military veterans - James in Bosnia. Thankfully, this song, this video found a distant cousin who came forward with kidney match to make a successful transplant.

In the video, that is actually his dad. Both James and his dad were officers in the British Army: James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. The line; "we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was said by James to his dad as he was leaving for the Kosovo war in '99. At the end of the recording, James and the crew were all in tears. His dad snarked "I'm not dead YET"!! and had to console them all. After releasing this song, James gave all proceeds to the British charity "Help For Heroes", which aims to help veterans. What a champ!!

Something you might think about, Zach. When things pull from you emotions that are challenging and difficult to understand...mark them down as to what song, book, saying or whatever it might be...and keep it with others. In those difficult emotions are meanings you've internalized that make you feel small, diminished, discounted, excluded...and similar memory-meanings that make you feel smaller than you want(ed) to feel. Grieving, and memory-pain, are deeply linked in that grieving is telling stories that don't come out right...until we exhaust the meanings we gave them. Be THE scientist of your life...and track down those meanings you've internalized that are not built in reality...but built in relationships that had dimensions that were broken and dysfunctional. It might be a simple as someone leaving your life...in whatever way...and you can't get over how what you thought you'd be able to enjoy for some long arc of time...you can't. It can be the abandonment of a parent, or the 'betrayal' of a loved other. It doesn't much matter the source...but the meanings. If you thought a parent would be for forever...and they leave...they betrayed...they 'abandoned' in your eyes...they violated trusts and promises. You can maybe see...there are a million things we give meaning to in a manner that we agree to feel small to try and be small enough that critical people/groups in our lives will like us, love us, accept us, include us...etc. Be the scientist...knowing that pain is the brain's inability to make your expectations of meanings fit the reality that actually occurs in our lives. My mother died of breast cancer when I was 30...when she wasn't supposed to do that. It radically changed my life...not by plan as much as coming free of feeling small...trying to be small...enough...to fit into a world into which I did not care to fit. Be the scientist, trace the emotions and their meanings...and do it with each small surge of hurt that our daily lives trigger...accidentally most of the time. Trace them...watch them...observe them...until you exhaust the meanings that you gave. Internalizing things...is very toxic. You will do a great deal of damage to your physical and emotional life. Be thrilled in that the universe gives us a tool...pain...to alert us to more learning needing done...and go do the research and re-learning it's asking you to do. Thanks for standing before yourself and encouraging yourself long enough to post the video. Many reactors were challenged by this...trying to appear cool and tough...instead of real and honest. And for reference, I'm a 67 yr old dude who's been studying the mess we are since I was 15....mark

@@zack_reacts Just to expand on what Mark said... in another comments section we spoke of how this song is therapeutic. In a way it gives you permission to cry and to grieve and helps you to move on with your life.

This is heart breaking and James has a very unique voice. Another unbelievable singer is Dimash Kudaibergen. Please react to Dimash singing "Ogni Pietra" the fancam version or from his own channel. This guy has an 6 octave range and he is trained since the age of 5 years old. It will blow your mind. All the best from Germany and stay safe ☀️Petra 🇩🇪

Another one you can get your teeth into is WHISKY LULLABY, OFFICIAL VIDEO. I've got to say life has its good times and bad times and we all have to get through them, its not all a bed of roses far from it, the good times we have to remember, the bad times to forget. I've just watched this again and well done 👏👏👏

Unfortunately I've heard that song many many times so I don't feel I could give a genuine reaction. GREAT song though and thank you for your support.

@@zack_reacts You're welcome 🤗 Your style is different from the others, you seem very real and honest for a young man, I'm an old lady now. Have seen life and age does give wisdom. Whisky Lullaby as you've said is wonderful another true story, so well done, its the end the after death that always brings me to tears, happy again in the afterlife if there is one 🤔. BROTHERS IN ARMS is another meaningful story song by DIRE STRAITS, OFICIAL VIDEO. and recently covered by HOME FREE, both versions are wonderful, if you have time. I'm subscribing and well done again..

In Britain, men of a certain age will understand that a father and son can be close, but not really show it a lot of the time. This was James, who thought his father’s time had nearly come due to kidney cancer, baring his soul and raw love for his dad in a farewell song. Thankfully his father was found a donor due to the release of this song and he is healthy to this day.

Thanks to Iam Tongi on Finale of American Idol for singing Monsters By James. I never would have heard this song as i dont usually watch this anymore. My husband found this song Yesterday. My dad passed 3wks ago May 4th 2023 an while holding my hand an im bawling, and I feel this was a sign from my dad to not worry, he is ok. I wish i found this for his funeral. I know he would have loved it RIP DAD 2-10-56 - 5-4-23. The part of not being scared ill chase monsters away really brings me back to 2 days before he passed, he said " I'm really scared to cross over, I said why r u scared, I looked him in eyes grabbed his hands an told him u believe in Yeshua an he said yes I said u have accepted the lord an nothing to fear then, an he got bright eyed an said ur right, i dont have to be afraid. as he had COPD an we knew it was coming, just not so soon. He came outta rehab in March , an he passed May 4th.
