Something to reconsider on the door-stay segment: Don't ever hook safety equipment to a belt loop on your jeans. They break with very little stress. If you have a belt, just hook your carabineer around the belt itself. If you don't have a belt, Ollydog makes a great one with nylon webbing loops to clip your carabineer too that are sewn for stress, or you can loop the leash around your waist and hook it to itself. The dog hitting the end of the leash at full speed is more than enough to rip the stitches from your belt loop. That's not safety, but the illusion of safety, which is more dangerous than nothing at all! (If you want to save someone dangling from a bridge or cliff, never ever grab by their belt loop. Grab the belt or the waistline of the pants.)

I have to admit, I was sceptical about your training technique in the early phases and there was one point you did come under some criticism (cant remember the episode), however; after watching this journey from the start I am really quite impressed. In my opinion only, it seems to be a much more time consuming and longer process but what great results you are getting. What I really like is the only training device you have applied is the body harness with lead and high value treats - correct me if I am wrong. What a wonderful way to build a freindship as you train your dog. I have now purchased your book to continue the training of my boy.

These videos help me a lot with patience. I adopted a 6month old border collie from an abuse situation where she was exposed to NOTHING. So she is terrified of everything and I’m slowly getting her to not panic at every little thing we come across. She is still very nervous, though. Too nervous to listen to commands anywhere but home or on empty trails. I didn’t realize how much patience rescuing an abused dog would take, but I am so thankful for her. She has come a long way in two and a half months and you make me look forward to the day she won’t be scared just being anywhere but home. Thank you.

You can find rubber sticks online you could throw. I'm glad you said people shouldn't do this, but as a person who had her dogs throat cut I can say they are NEVER safe. I also threw it very lightly and not too crazy but my dog just ran into it and it pierced his palate quite bad. You never ever want to see your dog drink his water with his own blood constantly pouring out.

Yes, it actually blew my mind when I got my dog, how many people had similar stories. Never heard anything about dogs running into sticks and getting severely injured before, but dozens of stories when I just got my dog. I've taken it to heart and only throw balls and frisbees. Would like to see more dog-trainers warning about the dangers here.

When we are in the woods with the dogs, they get to chew on sticks eat grass, Heather roots or soil if they want. The Vet said there is plenty minerals, vitamins and even good probiotic bacteria. We Never had a problem in 30 years owning dogs. But since you mention it, i wanna mention Dog toys can also be very dangerous... I have seen plenty dogs that has eaten toys that get stuck in the dogs intestiants. And that can easily kill them. Just saying. You can choke on a nut, but is that a legit reason not to eat nut anymore. As long as we dont over excite them and make them "greedy" they should be fine. It is the same with bones. Bones should be the right size for the size of dog and they should always be fresh, Never cocked or old. Since we are talking about dangerous things... have any of you seen PETFOOLED?

And the stick thing is more about sticks landing into the ground, and dogs running into the other end than them chewing on them. Chewing is fine, better on sticks than certain toys. You always have to pay attention when they're chewing on anything though, and take it away before it gets small enough to swallow.

Where you are you have to think about the traffic and city-type dangers and at my place, I have to worry about rattlesnakes being right outside our door (which is the main reason I train this with my dogs). I have a mali and man they really are hard work. Intelligent but very easily bored. And when bored they can be destructive. Need a LOT of training a lot of exercise and a lot of enrichment. Not a dog I would ever recommend to anyone not highly experienced with dogs of a high energy breed

Keep in mind that mals are not your average pet dogs. They need to work... if not, you and your dog will suffer. Mals are your full-time job and you will probably never have any time for yourself. Someone else in the replies already suggested Robert Cabral and Michael Ellis so I would suggest looking them up if you're really serious.

Arbi I know that’s why I said after I finish college which is like five years from now. It’ll give me time to prepare and I won’t be focusing on school work anymore and will be able to give the dog my full attention. I love dogs and I’m actually counting on buildings my life around it. I get bored easily and plan on living on my own and working from home. Training a dog like that will be a crazy experience I know, they’re stubborn and have high drive and energy and want something to do 24/7. That’s exactly why I want one. I do plan on putting it to work as well, I don’t stay in my house long and neither will it. I like that you all care, it shows you truly value a dogs well being and aren’t comfortable knowing what this dog is like and having one end up where it and the owner will only suffer. I did and still am doing research on them, though I’m not sure what else there is to know. I lost count of the amount of articles I’ve read, watched like ten KZbin videos where people talk about them, and even made them the topic of a research project for school. ( I am watching those other channels too them and Simpatico Dog Training )

Have a meet up with friends that have good socialized dogs whether in a big backyard or a park. Keep in mind social distancing while in public and that your friends are not people at risk with Covid 19.

Watching the world from a distance (the "screensaver training" mentioned in this video) will be great for teaching your dog to stay calm when something exciting appears in their field of vision. Dogs can't get the virus, but they can transmit it just like a door handle or some other inanimate object would. Luckily the virus does not withstand changing temperatures, sunlight, etc. very well (when it's on a surface like your dogs' coat). If you arrange meetups with another dog (and their owner), have a plan for how to stay physically separated from the other person and avoid touching each others dogs, or any other surface. You should not be inside someone's home, find a place with very few or no other people that is outside. For teaching your dog to enjoy being touched by strangers, walk the dog outside for a good amount of time before you let them approach a person you've previously made arrangements with, then walk your dog back home before touching it. Use a very long leash so that you don't have to get close to the person. Make a list of things you've chosen not to socialize your dog to at this moment (older people, crowds, public transport, restaurants, whatever you can think of) and work through those things at another time. Even if your dogs' socialization window has closed, they can still adapt to new things, though it might require more time and patience. Best of luck!

Hey Zak. I'm an autistic girl and I am new to your channel and you've taught me so much already. I've ordered 3 copies of your book and am awaiting them very excitedly!! I've subscribed and I just thought I'd ask a quick question. My husband and I are each training our own puppy for service dog training. I would LOVE to see a series of videos on basics and more advanced things for owner training service dogs. If you could do this that would be AMAZING! I could leave the door open and my sweet Nahla would just stand there and not go past under any circumstances. Even when other dogs where just outside closer then your fence. Until I released her she would stay, even if it wasn't commanded. It was incredible... Just incredible. For a border collie... I never trained her at all to do that, she just picked it up. My wife left the door open once, I didn't see her so I thought she took off, I'm freaking out... Calling to her outside and nothing. I make my way all around the neighborhood shouting for her... Finally make it home thinking she's gone and there she is standing in the open doorway. 😰 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁. It was amazing she knew what to do, that is not pass the doorway unless given permission. I never trained her to do that. It was simply an incredible blessing.

I live in atlanta too- my dog is allowed to walk out on the porch but if he wants to go down into the front lawn we have to say go on and same if he wants to go on the side walk and go onto other properties to greet the neighbors

@zak, this is great. I love your videos. I used to have a Border Collie and we have Aussies now. Just a note, I had my last dog yank the carabiner hard one day and tore the belt loop right open! I would HIGHLY recommend using a belt as a backup.

Another currency is voice and praise. I've had 2 dogs who were more interested in praise than anything else. The 1st one was a border collie (of course) and the 2nd who I still have is a New Zealand heading dog. Again heading dogs have mainly border collie in their breeding. This dog was a rescue and was completely shut down when I got her and all her training was with praise. Now that she is older she does love treats though

My border collie is so chonky compared to Inertia! He's got a bit of cattle-dog in him and he's a bit overweight. It's amazing how much variation you can get in a breed. I see so much of my boy's mannerisms in her too. They're so bright! I feel like they're hard to train in the sense that they know the stuff they're taught, but they decide when to listen. 🤦😆 I could write an essay about BC trainability and their delightful habit of selective hearing! At least they mellow with age. Well, most of them. 😉 Inertia's doing so well and growing up so fast! Thanks for sharing this, Zak. 😊

Hi Zac! Your videos are awesome! I'd love a video on how to train your dog to not play 'keep-away'. My dog always seems to be obsessed with her ball, takes it and runs away, wanting us to chase her to get it. We find it hard when we're at a park and she ends up grabbing another dog's ball and then it takes forever to get it off of her to give it back. Any tips?

Refuse to participate. Stand your ground, give a command like come or drop it, and have a reward handy. If he runs and no one chases, he will likely come back for a treat.... after some repetition to confirm the game of chase is over.

Traffic can be even more tempting for a border collie - many want to herd cars. I live in the country so spent several training sessions in town w my BC pup on a busy corner clicking her for staying and for watching me. She’s now 12 and has had no desire to chase or herd cars - whew!

Bc yesterday, all i did was go downstairs to get a delivery- K... she sounded like someone was cooking her, up here on open fire, while i was scared she was going to bust through the door, Did not take long, for her to 'untrain' after years of training- (wtf?!) I’ve been keeping a structure similar (but modified) to when I wasn’t at home, so my dog would be placed in his crate for a couple of hours after we would train/play and he’d just have to deal with us being around the house while he was in his crate. He’s been doing fine with it and settles in there for naps (at one point, he would just sit and stare, so he’s become more well adjusted again and settles more again). He whines sometimes when we get home from going out, but I implemented our “quiet” training again and that nipped that habit quick. If you didn’t crate train, that may be something to work on now (crate games are helpful), as it’s an important thing for any dog to have. If you didn’t crate train but kept them in a smaller space, maybe do that, instead, to keep structure? Dogs do well on having as much structure as possible.

Sarah Cooper Any dog can get this way. Some breeds more than others may be susceptible to it and genetics do play a role (well bred vs not), but it can happen with any breed in some form.

I think it would be very beneficial if you could create a Playlist of videos where you specifically deal with small/ toy breeds. It feels super frustrating to figure how visually training could/ should work when your dog doesn't reach the height of your hand for easy rewarding. I just got a jack russel chihuaha and it feels impossible to get his attention out visualize how to"easily" be in the right position ourselves to be the best trainer. I how that makes sense. I'll keep scoring your content though :) love your approach

They constrict the movement on the shoulder, a y style harness is good, personally i quite like the anny x harnesses.

Inertia is on a H harness... it's the one that distributes pressure best on the dog's chest without blocking any kind of movement.
