Then someone has to change the subject because if they even lightly ribbed him about telling a bad joke, there was a good chance he would get angry.

My God, every time people are laughing and riffing towards the second half of this video, Opie gets audibly uncomfortable and either takes a phone call or tries to change the subject to something else. He even plays music at the end to end the show, but no one leaves. So instead Norton purposely does a dry/boring read of an ad, until Opie takes the hint and leaves. Then immediately everyone starts being funny again.
