One of the BEST car DIY’s I’ve ever seen!! He explains how to deal with all the little problems that amateurs struggle with, like how to release connectors without breaking them, common mistakes, etc. Too many videos just let you watch with no or limited description. Fantastic advice!! And English isn’t even his first language!!! (Kind of embarrassing for the rest of us)

2011 328I sedan. I want to thank you for this video. Because of it we changed the valve cover and gasket to a new improved valve cover that is more resistant to cracking (read about this issue on BMW forum). This car only has 60,000 miles and the gasket had been changed twice. It developed a new leak so we started watching videos on how to do this our self. The worst problem we ran into was actually pulling the cover after everything was unbolted. It was a job to get the cover off! Same thing for putting the new one on. The rear area where the cover goes into, next to the firewall was very tricky maneuvering and it took us a while to get it in place. Finally got it. Found the rear bolts very hard to get into place, actually had to start on the passenger side rear corner bolt, then the other two rear bolts. Got them all started and then took our time to torque into place. After the job was done, I cleaned and inspected the original valve cover and found it to be just fine, no cracks. While looking it over I actually think the oil link was coming from the valvetronic unit where it bolts into the cover, which leaked oil out and spread everywhere. Don't think the leak was actually the valve cover gasket itself. At the end of the day, job done and a three hour drive later, no leaks!

I watched all the E90 valve cover gasket videos before starting this job. I have to agree with so many others who say this is the best video on replacing the N52 valve cover gasket. Whoever holds the camera also did a fantastic job getting clear close shots. I finished replacing my valve cover gasket on my 2008 SULEV N51 two days ago. All the tips and recommendations proved necessary and invaluable. Moving the AC line in the back near the firewall as well as unbolting the coolant expansion tank helped a lot. Removing the valve cover was easy afterwards. In fact, I did it twice after the new gasket fell out the first time. That was mainly because I had no RTV silicone at home initially -- something I had to run out and get to do it properly the second time. This video provided helpful tips that you don't find in other videos. The gentleman making the video obviously has a lot of experience and it showed. Since I was a first timer doing this job, I took a couple of extra steps. I removed the bottom splash shield before I began -- I knew I'd lose a bolt or something by dropping them, which indeed happened a couple of times. Otherwise, it'd hard to drive the car onto a ramp to remove the splash shield after starting disassembling the engine components. I also used a coin-sized mirror on a stick to inspect the new gasket on the installed valve cover before putting all the bolts back in. The mirror can be used easily between the firewall and engine as well as inside the spark plug wells. This channel's video on replacing the starter motor on the E90 was also great. I used it 6 months ago on the same car.

Thanks for posting this great DIY video. I successfully replaced the valve cover on my 2011 BMW 328i convertible. The local dealership wanted more than $2,000 including $500 for the BMW valve cover. The job took me about 5 hours of careful effort. Doing it again would likely take 3.5 hours. I did experience the initial smoking after completing the job but it disappeared after 15 minutes as you described. Separately, my car ran poorly and out of balance and I had to pull the engine cover off and found that the electrical connector on the cylinder 6 coil pack wasn't completely locked. The car is running great. Thanks again for providing me this great video.

Just did valve cover on my 2009 328xi. I chose to do whole valve cover that came with gaskets and seals.Your video rocks! Disconnect and remove everything as described. I held back wires n stuff with bungee cords. only thing i would mention is that if you leave battery disconnected for 2 days you may get a bunch of fault codes. 4x4, brake etc. Turn steering wheel to lock and they go away. I thought I left something disconnected and went back in. Not needed.

Did this job today following this video as a guiding reference. I used a Fel-Pro gasket kit. Very good quality gasket material and thick. Things I did different from video; 1) used a 4mm Allen key to turn the valvetronic motor so there was no spring tension to fight. 2) disconnect the lower vanos sensor plug in the front, so the wire was completely loose to swing it all out of the way with the fuel injector harness. I also did the oil filter housing gasket at the same time. Leaks are gone! 👍

Awesome video - Thank you! Here is my advice based on the work I did: 1) I unplugged the O2 sensors - more room to wiggle the cover out, 2) spark plug tubes can be gently removed with a pick tool, 3) I glued two plastic pieces under the cover with two part JB weld and let it dry overnight (later found this is recommended on some forums and pelican parts), due to the age of the cover these no longer stayed in place, 4) I removed most of the valve cover bolts including the retainers for easy placement of the cover back on, I used rubber bands to hold up the ones that stayed in, 5) I torqued the bolts by hand, went around 4 times or so, nice and sung but not too tight to crack the plastic cover, the torque wrench I have starts at 10 ft lbs and while I could set it to 7 ft lbs - the 'click' was just not that pronounced and I was worried to strip the bolts or the head or crack the plastic cover, 6) if you lube eccentric shaft gasket with some silicon, there is no need to bang it into place, it just goes in like butter. Besides this the procedure for this engine is EASY, just take your time. Oh and I did use the dealer gaskets - pricy but hoping it lasts longer then aftermarket.

An extremely helpful tip on the e90 mine is a 2010 328i , when removing or reinstalling the valve cover it gets hang up big time in the back. The 2 things that prevented me was the corner tab piece on the ecu box maybe 1/2 by 1” I just broke that tiny piece off and the crowling that keeps banging against the back of the valve cover (27:00)when trying to remove, solution I just wedged something underneath the crowling plastic piece on weather stripping actually the handle of my screwdriver and left it there until I had enough clearance to raise the back of the valve cover off and also remove weather stripping obviously. It’s a must to open the electrical box lid to move the wires over.

What a superb video! every step clearly covered, every nut, bolt and tiny little helpful camera angle (Kudos to the cameraman!) It made me thankful that i served my apprenticeship in the early 1970's, when things were a hell of a lot easier! stayed in the trade for 35 years, until health let me down, and it is so obvious that the manufacturers nowadays make things so damn difficult for the owner to do, so they can charge outrageous amounts for jobs. If i were to make a comic view of this video, i would say that i was waiting for the front seats to be removed before access was granted to the removal of the rocker cover! i mean, it's totally ridiculous that these machines (and i am a BMW owner, btw) are designed like this, surely things could be made a lot simpler...but, i digress, a superb video, and you can tell that he's a "proper" mechanic, because he puts all the nuts and bolts on the gap on the side of the engine compartment.....never mind the workbench! Sir, you are a true teacher of the art of mechanics, most would just keep topping the oil level up or sell the car asap! An absolute pleasure to watch.

@@Zeiten I did the repair successfully, the only difference was I disconnected the battery. Once everything was put back together the car starts and drives fine but I have no power windows, control over headlights, no dash lights, no interior light, no turn signals, a red service indicator. Any ideas what is wrong? From my research it sounds like my frm fried?? ):

Possible, that’s why i never disconnect the battery😁

Thanks man! this video is amazing! Is it the s.ame process for an N53? Also do you have a part number for the valvetronic motor seal?

Perfectly execution! Wouldn’t have done it without you. Thank you. Followed to the tee. The only thing I would do is use a 4mm hex to screw in the valvetronic motor 41:00

Super Super cool video. thank you. this is a tip that I used when changing the valve cover gasket, manifold or the starter : Use a bunggie cord to hold the harness away from the top of the engine/valve cover while you changing the gasket (hook it to the hole on the hood).

What a great instructional video. The best I’ve seen, not just for this job, but for any other project I’ve researched. Thank you! One question about the valvetronic motor: others say to screw hex clockwise until tension is felt, remove bolts, then turn hex counterclockwise to screw out valvetronic. Would you explain why you do it differently, skipping those steps? Is there a risk of the motor “springing” out? Thank you.
@Zeiten Жыл бұрын
Thank you, appreciate the feedback🙌 you can do it either way, just hold valvetronic motor and it won’t jump out, in the end same result tension released from eccentric shaft and when you put it back you just need to preload eccentric shaft back, no need to complicate things in my opinion🤷♂️

This video is so detailed that I thought I could actually do it myself as a novice. I was wrong. I just finished and my car sounds terrible now, but thankfully this guy also lives in Los Angeles so hopefully he has time to work on my car. I bet I just forgot to reconnect something 😑

At time 31:48 of this video, Zeiten suggested to use elring gasket, I did purchased an elring gasket from rack auto, unfortunately, it is not good as you mentioned, the gasket is in bad manufacture quality which is a little bit longer in one section, this section of the rubber is never fit into the position properly. The web store asking me to ship it back under my cost( the shipping cost is higher than the gasket's). so it waste my money and time. Finally, I purchased one from dealer, and it is fitting the valve cover properly.

Do take the bolts out from the back side. The bolt caught during the wrestling match and cracked my left rear bolt hole in half on the valve cover. Taking out the bolts will keep the valve cover from taking damage. Experience
