It's amazing what kind of details you can find by looking really closely at Nintendo's design. I did a study like this with the Star Fox 64 character controller and I discovered that there's so much in the way of small details that ultimately define the feel of the game. Small details are just as important as big details! My attempt at Star Fox 64 gameplay is on my channel if you want to see!

Super agree, gameplay programming is all about the fine details. It's a complete skill on its own when it comes to game dev

Mario 64 is the prime example imo. I still don’t think Nintendo has matched that level of mindful design since.

Maybe the camera should look at the midpoint between the target object and the hero, and rotate around it to keep the two entities visible - if the goal is making something Zelda‐like.

I've been subscribed to this channel for awhile, and I really enjoyed the amount of detail you've put into your game so far. I really wanna get into 3d modeling myself, especially in the N64 style (since I grew up with that console as well). Keep up the good work!

Wow! Well done! A good camera can make or break a game. Looks like you've got a good start!

this looks really good! youre capturing the OOT style very well. only nitpick that i have is that the side jump looks a bit stiff, if that makes sense. i notice that in your side jump, the character stays centered, but in OOT link moves first and then the camera catches up to him. maybe that has something to do with it? my only other guess as to why i think it looks stiff is that the acceleration/deceleration could use some work.

Yep it looks awful. I hope to improve it when I make the animations for real!

Studying how Nintendo did the lock-on in Zelda is very good and will help you immensely. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is how many games have bad lock-on camera. A simple principle that the camera in Zelda follows is that it generally does not like to move. So many other games have a lazier lock-on setup where it's locked to your back all the time. What's worse is how they're unable to handle anything in the air and the camera goes up their ass (metal gear rising, dark souls, etc). Meanwhile, take the aerolfos in twilight princess or any large enemy and what they do is dolly back the camera so you can have a clear view. The one zelda you should NOT use as study reference for the lock-on camera is breath of the wild. They completely fucked that up.

This is really cool, the camera in OoT is a very good one to try and learn from. I think for the camera movement when you block the target, your version seems to move to the side? where as in OoT I think it its just slightly rotating around the target. This would make sense because it would more quickly bring the target back in view.

0:58 I think the change from "Normal mode" to "Targeting mode" is still a bit too rough, I think Zelda's is a bit smoother so it doesn't make the player doesn't notice the sudden movement so much(? (It's hard to explain in english, but I think you get the idea, lol). The Targeting mode looks really cool! I think I never noticed that thing you mentioned about Zelda's targeting slowly moving to the left or right with certain movements, it's a really cool detail that you implemented ^^ This project is coming along really good, excited to see how it keeps developing over time ^^

Hi Legend 64! I’ve kept you in mind for the past couple years ever since I discovered your channel. It struck me how cool it was to see somebody trying to recreate a visual style which previously existed due to limitation, but which is actually really beautiful. Do you have any comments on other attempts at N64 style? I just discovered a couple games (Mac Bat 64, Knight’s Try) and they seem pretty faithful to the old visuals, but some things are off? Idk, not asking you to criticize them, but I understand that this is practically an artistic discipline (like pointillismvs cubism or something lol) so maybe you have some input on how those efforts turned out and what you would do differently? Idk just curious what you think if you check them out. I consider you the modern authority on the topic lol. Cheers!

So I just checked them out and there's a few things that give the game away, like the framerate and a camera that's a little too fast and free, but I'm really impressed by what I've seen. The visuals seem very faithful to the N64 and I think that's both a good and bad thing as a lot of N64 games tend to look like crap. If I had to pin that on anything I'd say it's weak art direction. It's all good emulating the older look of games, but if your art is weak it will always look bad. The N64 Zelda games (as well as any game by Rare back then) still look phenomenal despite their age, and that's because of their incredible art direction. I'm trying to emulate the look of the N64 with my game but that is not my primary goal. I'm also trying to make what I view as art and I hope that is coming off in what you've seen so far. Overall though I think it's awesome that people are trying to copy the N64 warts and all, I'd say they nailed it!

Combat looks very stiff. Maybe you should get some inspiration from "bloodborn psx" when it comes to god combat systems that also feel old shool.
