"I've always felt that early 3d graphics have a mysterious quality to them. There's just something about the blurry simplistic imagery that gets my imagination runnung wild. As unintentional as it may have been at the time, I consider these visual limitations to be an efective art style, one that is both beautiful and unique. They are outdated technologically speaking but they have certain charm that hasn't faded even after 20 years". COULDN'T AGREE MORE.

Hell yeah, I find myself playing mostly games from 2005 and earlier lately. Games back then were just made differently, I feel bad for people who will never get to experience that.

Exactly how I feel about games of that era, especially N64 ones. I love the blocky polygonal charm to them.

I absolutely agree about the mysterious, magical quality of those old games. Ocarina and Majora are seared permanently into my memory, and I have high hopes for your project. Keep going!

As an old-school gamer that vehemently always argues against when people pull the " _rose-tinted glasses_ " card, I absolutely agree. Graphics will always get better and more realistic but that doesn't mean it'll be better.
@game-enjoyer132 жыл бұрын
I agree. Being as realistic and graphically powerful as possible, does NOT necessarily mean it’s good. There’s a point where graphics can be SOOOOO powerful and believable, that it takes away a huge chunk of the mystery, a artistic intent, imagination, and escapism that are core values of video games. I’ll take Doom Eternal or Halo 1 over Hyper realistic real world gun shooting simulator #183.

Super excited to see the final project! While the nostalgia of the graphics are what draw me in, it's really the worlds and the stories within the games that make me love Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the N64! I recommend not getting too ambitious with your first project and keeping the gameplay and story minimal, but once you've learned the ropes and can work on things efficiently, go all-in! It would be great to feel like a kid again playing an N64-style game!

Really inspirational stuff you're doing! This aesthetic feels dreamy to me. It's realistic enough to feel relatable/grounded while leaving the rest for us to interpret.

Man, I'm so glad interest in the beginnings of the 3D era is becoming more mainstream and trendy. I had a similar idea as you around the time the Super Mario 3D All Stars collection came out. I became obsessed with the graphics and art from the Nintendo 64 era, and learned a ton about the rendering pipeline and hardware of the console itself. That rabbit hole lead me to learn more about the company Nintendo had partnered with for the hardware, Silicon Graphics. From there, I started learning about IRIX, UNIX, BSD, and how they're related to modern operating systems like iOS/macOS, Linux, and Android. The late 90s were such an important time regarding the stuff we rely on constantly nowadays. Though my idea of creating what you currently are never came to fruition, I'm really glad that yours has materialized into something. I look forward to buying this once it becomes available!! Best of luck :)

I absolutely agree there was just something magical about those old N64 style games(even some PS1 games), I felt the same way toward late 90s/early 2000 PC games, they were just so mysterious you didn't know what would happen next, not to mention down right fun and goofy at times

Really cool idea for a project. It’s great to see someone working hard for their vision. And your expression of appreciation for this art style made me consider it in a new light. I never really thought about N64 graphics that was before, but I think I can appreciate your perspective.

Hey, I just wanna say that your channel has been a real boon for my own N64-style game's development. It seems like most low-resolution enthusiasts either don't really care about the technical differences between older systems, or specifically want to emulate the PS1. My own game utilizes these minute graphical differences as a narrative element, so it's quite helpful to see someone really digging into the N64 side of things. Beyond that, Legend 64 looks amazing so far! I can't wait to see the final product one day.

You speak to my level man. I too adore games on the N64 for those polygonal blocky character models and simplistic but effective environments. They are primitive but somewhat comforting of a time in which I grew up with. N64 was the first console I ever owned to play in my room, so it has a deeper connection with me for sure.

I've always felt the same way about the N64 era graphics and especially the Zelda games. I totally get the appeal that you see in the look and I wish more people could see what we see. I've wanted to do exactly what you are doing for years, and even have gone about several attempts at finding a workflow that allows me to recreate that look in an efficient manner. I haven't been able to recreate it as accurately as you have, and my attempts always gradually start to skew towards more of a gamecube look... which I also adore. Keep up the awesome work!

You have finally convinced me to make a n-64 style game on my own. Ive been a 3D modeller for almost a year and have been stuck on what I have wanted to make!
@Legend64Project2 жыл бұрын
Thats great! I’m glad you’ve been inspired by my videos. If you are still relatively new to 3D modeling, I wouldn’t lock yourself in on a low poly art style just yet as you won’t have to learn as many new things to achieve the look as it doesn’t require as much technical know-how. Try to master realism in 3D first as that will force you to come out of your comfort zone and learn things that you won’t necessarily need if you are just making low poly stuff so to speak. It’s worth it in the long run. Hope that helps!

I really like how you are able to capture the aesthetic from that era so beautifully. I have a project that I will be doing next year that will also be using n64 style graphics. Sadly I am not a 3d modeler and dont really have the time to git gud since my actual role is vastly different. Do you know if you will be making an asset pack and selling them on the unreal market place? ( and if you dont want or plan to because of whatever personal or professional reasons you may have, that is perfectible fine and I respect it) the project I will be involved in has a medieval fantasy setting but is dark in tone. The closest thing I can compare it to is the look and feel from the castlevania 64 games. Except with decent controls. really hope to see a demo soon of your game. it reminds my of this goemon game on n64 i once played.

I think it’s really impressive that you’re able to pull of the style without a very low resolution and frame-rate. In the next video could you show off the game with the n64 resolution and awful 20fps?

@Legend64Project3 жыл бұрын
Sadly I think making a real N64 game would require a different set of skills than what is common in the industry today. From what I’ve read it was a very difficult console to program games for. I would certainly love to make a real game on a cartridge, but there’s no way I’d be able to do it by myself without the proper tools :(
