My take on the $760/pair flagship towers from the ELAC Debut line. So the big question is.... is the hype real?

Great info! I've got a set of Debut 2.0 6.2's (which I really like), but just moved and am up between the newer F6.2's or the Uni-Fi UF5's. Your review, and that description of their differences (in a thread below) have me leaning toward the F6.2's, given the challenging room they'll be in. Thanks!

thanks for taking the time to make this video. this was one of reasons that I bought a pair about three weeks ago.I could not be more pleased with this product. I am driving them with an older pioneer vsx 9990 130 a side of clean power. I am filling in the bottom with a couple of cheapie polk subs, I will certainly upgrade soon. I listen to a wide variety of music and I like it loud, these speakers take everything in stride. the midrange is smooth and lively, without being harsh. have you tried elacs 400 watt sub? I am considering it along with the Yamaha 250 sub. I got 20 years from my Yamaha ysx 100

How do these stack up against a similar set by Klipsch? any insight?, also is a basic macbook pro going to push these well enough or are these more designed for a stereo receiver with real power/ Thanks
@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 6 жыл бұрын
While your Macbook Pro comes equipped with a low-powered headphone amplifier, it will not be able to power a set of conventional loudspeakers. No computer can, for that matter. If you're looking for a more traditional solution, you basically have two options: 1) Buy yourself a set of powered-speakers. These speakers come with a built-in amp. All you gotta do is connect them to your laptop, and you're done. A popular and affordable options is the JBL L305. Note that you'll likely be limited to small, bookshelf-type speakers if you go this route. 2) If you want to buy a more conventional speaker, like something from ELAC, Klipsch, Polk, etc.. then you will need to buy a separate receiver / integrated amplifier to power them. The good news is that this will give you a lot more flexibility in terms of options. The bad news is that it will cost more and take up more space. If you're looking at receivers, some of my favorite nowadays are simple pieces from Marantz or Sony . Good reliability and surprisingly good sound. And lastly, to answer your question: Klipsch and ELAC have a totally different sound. Klipsch has more of a "you are there/at the rock concert" type of sound. It's very forward, dynamic, and in-your-face. The ELAC by contrast, is softer, warmer, and is notably more balanced throughout the frequency range. I think the ELAC Debut is a much easier recommendation. Klipsch? That's more of a love it /hate it situation. That said, if you love it, then there really isn't much else like it for the $$$. My advice? Once you make a choice, buy from a retailer that offers a money-back guarantee. Cheers

Zero Fidelity ,you claim of the Klipsch “has more of a you are there/at the rock concert” any other time in the realm of speaker reviewing this would be the pinnacle of praise; comparing it to the original live concert. Whilst Using adjectives like softer and warmer, smack of colouration and band pass filtering. Your observations would equally describe the difference of any horn loaded tweeter vs. a direct radiating dome type of any two such dissimilar types of speaker designs. Paul Klipsch said distortion is inversely proportional to efficiency. Its sad that young reviewers of today rarely ever mention distortion and it is still the single largest contributor to listeners fatigue. Far more important than power handling, frequency response, and yes even cost. What are any of them really worth if after a few hours of listening one starts to fell anxious and tiers of the sound or worse grows increasingly fatigued and irritated?

Great videos man, I really enjoy your takes. Anyway, at the 0:56 mark, I noticed that the right speaker is partially "covered up" by the bed. That is very similar situation with my sofa and my left speaker. How much does having a big piece of furniture like you have affect the image? I also use two subs, so I don't think it affects bass that much. Also note that the tweeters are free and clear to my listening position and I toe my speakers in.

Sounds like a good platform for money savings and a little tweaking like slapping some fat mat on the inside walls, get some OCC wiring to replace what's inside and maybe some Furutech binding posts. If Steve Guttenberg thinks they're as good as speakers 2x the price but slightly flimsy construction, I believe it.

@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 6 жыл бұрын
I know it's been a year, but I wanted to respond to this anyway. So behind the scenes, a few friends of mine predicted that the sound would likely become a lot more TAD-like as the price went up. So far, it seems like that prediction has been correct. The Uni-Fi really begins to take on the "Andrew Jones" sound. Now, it seems like the Adante line is a complete departure from the Debut series, which means we're now entering truly polarizing territory.

Objectively, the F6's are better speakers. Subjectively, I think the T50's make for a fun listening experience and are not at all embarrassed by the F6's. I could even see some people preferring the more lively character of the T50s over the softer, more reserve Elacs.

Great review. I just bought a new 4k 70" TV and was looking at Elac for my first HT setup. I was looking at a 3.0/3.1 setup initially with the B4/to 5/6 and a C5 paired with an Onkyo 656/757. After seeing the F6 I'm thinking maybe a 2.0/2.1 system with F6. Maybe a center channel later. Rears will be a pain to wire based on layout so a 5.1 with B4-6 would be out of the question for a while. In otherwords do you think the extra $200-300 for a 2.1 F6 is worth it over a say 3.1 B6 C5 set up. Thanks for any information

I have been looking for some decent 3-way floor standers that don't cost as much as B&W. Looks like my wish may have come true! Great informative video! But I want something that will PUNCH when listening to EDM. Will these provide that? Or should I go with Klipsch? Again, loved the video
@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Wes. I gotta say man, the ELAC F6's aren't exactly lightweights when it comes to 'punch'. Klipsch is also pretty good in this regard, but I feel that Klipsch is more of a "you should try before you buy" speaker, whereas it's easier to get more consistent performance with ELAC's latest offerings. I will say this though, if you are BIG on experiencing a visceral sensation, then you may want to investigate their floorstanding speakers in the ELAC Uni line. They are even better suited for EDM!
@mudfan061

Thanks for the reply! I am definitely looking for consistent performance. Also, I read Audioholics' review on SVS Prime towers and I am now wondering how they compare to ELAC's Uni line. I may just have to try the speakers for myself, lol!

I'm guessing that's exactly what you'll have to do. I dunno man, the market is full of good stuff. Elac Uni. Polk is doing some real special stuff. Dynaudio has their Emit series. I'm sure the SV speakers are quite nice as well. I will say though, the Elac stuff I've heard is a pretty safe bet.

@ZeroFidelity 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Mykal, I never test anything out in the HT environment. Pure 2-channel baby! Still, I'd say the F6's would work very well for HT. The B5's, being monitors, won't do the same things that the F6's can do, but they'll still get the job done admirably well - especially for their size and price. The only word of caution I'll give you is that these speakers like power. I'm talking a good ole' fashioned beefy power-supply, which means wimpy receivers need not apply. If you do go this route, think about buying a receiver that carries an MSRP at around the $600-700 mark. Good luck!

The current JBL Studio series is wonderful for the $$$. The previous series before that (which is what you're referring to with the 180's), eh.. not so much. I'd most likely go for the Polk Monitor 60's if I were in your position. Don't get me wrong. The F6's ARE the better speakers. No question. But if you're wanting to keep it as cheap n' cheerful as possible, there ain't nothin' wrong with the Monitor 60's beyond some sizzle on the top end, which can be worked around.

Thanks David. :) The Uni-Fi line looks cool as hell. Word on the grapevine is that the Uni-Fi speakers are quite a bit more revealing. As you well know, the more revealing a speaker is the more obvious the tradeoffs tend to be. One of the most appealing things about the Debut F6 towers is how tough it is to make them sound bad. Even when connected to real world gear that's playing back real world music. :)

Hey J, the floor standers in that Pioneer A. Jones line really are GIANT killers! You own the BS-22's, so you owe it yo yourself to tryout the A. Jones FS52's at $100 ea. before moving onto another line. Your ears are already accustomed to the BS-22 sound which makes the Pioneer floor standers an affordable yet powerful upgrade in sound & performance. They've got true 8 element crossovers. How A. Jones was able to afford that costly of a crossover in a $100 tower speaker is a mystery. But all the real critics agree, the Pioneer Towers are the best speaker alive at $100 each. ~ peace

@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 6 жыл бұрын
I'm half-a-year late to your comment, but I wanted to respond to it anyway because you ask a good question. Here's the deal: You aren't going to find a set of large floor-standing loudspeakers, for under $1000 a pair, that boast of no audible cabinet resonances. Here's why: When you're building something to a price-point, you need to determine what compromises you're willing to make. When it comes to building an affordable floorstanding loudspeaker with multiple-drivers, most companies decide to invest their money into the drivers, binding posts, and aesthetics. The bottom line is that solid, rigid cabinets are expensive to make and expensive to ship. So they do what they can to employ intelligent bracing and then call it a day. And you know what? This is fine because most of the people who buy these products haven't owned $5000 + towers, so the compromises are perfectly liveable.

How would you compare the F6 to the F5?
@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 6 жыл бұрын
The F5 and the F6 have a very similar sound. So before I immediately give you the answer, let me give you some context. Unlike the bookshelf speakers in the Debut line, which are voiced to "boom" in order to give the illusion of a larger speaker at work, both the F5 and the F6 are voiced to be as linear a possible - given the limitations of the parts and budget. The F5 may come across as the "quicker" sounding loudspeaker in small rooms, but as a whole, the F6 has the same sound. It just sounds.. bigger and more dynamic in scale than the F5. If I had to chose between the two and could accommodate the larger speaker, I'd def. go for the F6.
@elbebe1000
@elbebe1000 6 жыл бұрын
The concentric drivers in the F5 doesn't make any difference in sound for your hears? What about highs?
@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 6 жыл бұрын
The concentric drivers are in the Uni-Fi line. Now, the differences between the Debut line and the Uni-Fi line are very distinct. The Debut is warm, easy going, and is designed to sound good in just about any situation. The Uni-Fi line, by contrast, is a bit more hi-fi. It's more clean, clear, extended on top, more dynamic, more 'balanced' across the frequency range, and has a more forward presentation. It's also a bit more particular about placement and gear, and isn't quite as friendly towards less than perfect recordings. What you'll ultimately prefer will boil down to taste.

Great info! I've got a set of Debut 2.0 6.2's (which I really like), but just moved and am up between the newer F6.2's or the Uni-Fi UF5's. Your review, and that description of both above have me leaning toward the F6.2's, given the challenging room they'll be in.

Are you saying Elac couldn't build these speaker with A. Jones? Sure they could , they are using his name .They did the same thing with Pioneer bs22s.I think your review would not lead me to buying these.I think they are equal to many speakers in that price point.

Of course ELAC could have built an affordable line without Andrew Jones. And it probably wouldn't have sucked. That said, would it have been as good, as well-rounded, and as well-received as the Debut or Uni-Fi line that Andrew came up with? Probably not. The same can be said for Pioneer. Before he joined the team, their similar-priced efforts were mediocre at best. So yes, clearly there is value to having a man like Andrew Jones on your team. That said... I agree that there are plenty of other great affordable products out there. ELAC doesn't have an exclusive hold on the affordable market. For example: Subjectively speaking, I prefer the Polk T50's to the similar-priced Pioneer towers or ELAC bookshelf speakers. Still what, separates Andrews work from most of his competitors are the balance of virtues that his products, particularly the ELAC Debut F5, F6, and Uni-Fi UF5, bring to the table. This is exactly what I celebrate in my review. And no, I don't think ELAC could have done it without him.

with all respect but not every speaker AJ made was good, The pioneer s-31 was far from good. The canton ergo RC-l was sold for 700 euro a pair and is already 20 years old but beats the f6 by big lengths!

That is an exact same tweeter from LOGIC3 system , i paid for it 40$ without amp used , that is a 10$ tweeter i think , its not flat has a bit of harsher tone to it , i think its due to some resonance , but maybe not , in any case , i have them on logic 3 speaker set , they are low end that is for sure, nothing expensive , they are aslo based on BBC monitor speaker , but dont think it sound like that , just looks like that , BBC has high end tweeter , thin plywood 9mm, and 3 Transformers size chokes in crossover , specially designed driver for it so on ,, so all in all its a cheap set of speakers , but 700$ is about 3x the price you need to pay to get that sound, you can get it for lot less , i got the tweeters for 40$ like i said , but its a3Inch woofer , so lets say another 200$ for Sub, and you have that for 250$, not to say there are no better speakers for that price , especialy used . Hell , you can get a Titanium dome tweeter and 8 inch woofer all with bi amplification and 4 AMPs for 250$ and that is NEW not used , but what would i know right

You wouldn't know much. That's for dang sure! That is a proprietary tweeter built by Elac, and only used in their speakers. It's not the same tweeter that's used in your crappy $40 system. You don't be a clue as to what you're talking about actually. So please. Stop pretending you do. Because if someone is dumb enough to take your advice. They're going to be seriously disappointed in the sound they hear.

+Zero Fidelity Agreed. The audio show show talk for the B5 was "$200 speaker producing bass on par with $20K speaker". Andrew Jones is certainly a rock star but it is a unfortunate to have the reality of the ELAC be a slight disappointment compared to the fever hype (and admittedly personal expectations). Whereas the Pioneer's reality & lasting impression was one of exceeding expectations and a happy glow feeling you got a super value. On the positive tip, word on the UniFi line is those do not have some of the boomy cabinet concerns I experienced with the B6 and that I think you slightly noted here for the F6.

if you could get back to me today let me know what you think member we were talking I'm getting the F5 up front you know the elac and Center Channel but before my wife knew that she got me a pair of bookshelf promonitor 1000 for the back should I take those back and get the B6 is I don't listen to music. I watch TV but mainly movies what do you think I was told it really not much difference in the back with those two speakers but you're the expert let me know and tell me why thank you I want to take him back today so could you please let me know today you are the coolest dude ever thank you I love your channel by the way
@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 7 жыл бұрын
In a perfectly ideal world, you'd have the same exact speaker running at all channels. Since that's impractical for most of us in the real world, the next best solution is to 'timbre match', which means to use the same brand/same series of speakers throughout the entire HT system. So what should you do? First, let me take a moment to recognize your awesome wife! I think its awesome that she bought you some Def Techs! You got a keeper right there! So the big question is: should you return the Def Techs and pick up the B6's instead? Honestly man, I'd base my decision off of how it would make her feel. If the return would bum her out, then hold onto those Def Techs and use them as rears. They're fantastic speakers and rear-channel stuff isn't nearly as important as having three matched speakers up front. If however, she ends up being totally cool with you picking up the B6's instead, then go in that direction. When you get down to the nitty gritty, having a timbre matched system is the path to a more tonally balanced presentation.

Andrew's career may span over two decades, but let's face it sbonamo, only hardcore audiophile geeks were aware of his work with KEF and TAD prior to his joining Pioneer and ELAC. Andrews reputation wouldn't morph into a 'household' industry name until his work with Pioneer. His latter work with ELAC cemented his reputation as one of the top loudspeaker engineers in the business. The bottom line is that there are few engineers in this business that the casual hi-fi shopper will recognize and/or respect. Andrew is among exclusive company in this regard. Nonetheless, it's important to note that this status only came about in recent years. Hence, "rising star". He's done great work, and I'm sure he'll continue to make positive contributions for many years to come.

1:29 First time he says that the waveguide disperses the sound and at 3:43 he says: "It's gonna have a more direct sound", which is right Mr ZERO Fidelity ? 2. Speaker with 15khz roll off, what ?! So it's not a full range speaker at all, not in lower side, not in higher side. 3. "The midrange on this if fantastic, maybe a little overly thick" Which is it afterall ? 4. Cabinet resonances? Are you serious ? I never never ever heard or read about cabinet resonance problem, There is AKAI in my country that has floorstanders at $30, yes $30 and they don't have cabinet resonances, WTF ELAC ? 5. "You hear the cabinet going, that's just insane talking. 6. So they sound "fantastic" but they have cabinet resonance, how can they sound good with cabinet resonance in the same sentence ? 7. My idea is that every compoent in this speakers are just pure crap starting with the finish and ending with bining posts. 8. "Point sourcey" in a hi-fi speaker, so these speakers are only for 1 person in the room? Really ? 9. My Dali Zensor 7s are bright but they are not hashy, and they are not sending me out of the room 10. A speaker manufactures should make great speakers for any price. So if you buy the cheapest model from a manufacturer and if you want to upgrade, you are a little forced to go with same manufacturer, but once you go ELACand you want to upgrade, you chose another manufacturer, you won't never and never go with a higher model from ELAC.
