Great score by the highly underestimated david shire who was one.of the best jazz filmsoundtrack composers in the 70s

This is one that slipped under everybody's radar. A great film with a great cast, direction and editing. Harry Dean Stanton is the most under rated character actor of our time.

What a movie. Only a masterpiece like this makes you want to watch it again and again as time goes on... Generally, the 70s were the best time -- the best movies, the best actors, the best music, the most gorgeous women, the best fashions...

There were maybe 25 people in the theater in Toledo, Ohio when I saw this in 1978, and we all applauded when the closing credits ended. Could be the best American film ever made about criminal recidivism. Hoffman, Harry Dean Stanton, Theresa Russell, M. Emmett Walsh, Gary Busey and Kathy Bates all give Oscar-worthy performances. And this theme song by David Shire played in my head for hours after I left the theater. Your taste is impeccable, zerokomma.

I agree i cant help thinking of Pacino when i look at Dustin and it's not just the Dopelganger looks or the wide eyed loud but controlled performance as well which are similar. But i cant explain why their star values and the box office/popularity of their movies are so different. All people remember of Dustin is probably the Rain man. Infact if Straight time had Pacino play the lead the movie would have had more of the cult status that it deserves! 🍷

@@varunemani The first film I ever paid to see more than once in a theater was "The Graduate" -- and I saw it 6 times. Hoffman's range as an actor was proven beyond any doubt several years later in "Midnight Cowboy." Ratso Rizzo was an incredible acting stretch from Benjamin Braddock.

And that I did. In fact I turned another person onto the film tonight and I suggested she watch your trailer along with the original before showtime. They showed this at the Egyptian in LA last summer during the 70's not on DVd series, a great print and everybody in the theatre stood up clapping at the end. Still a few good things about Los Angeles, I think.

I think Pacino would've ruined this movie; his acting style and what we usually see him play's something this movie doesn't need; meanwhile Hoffman has that "secrecy" this role really needs.

Nice film, good surprises, with an unpredictable, 'open' kind of ending like the 1972 Sam Peckinpah/Steve McQueen film.'The Getaway', I'm sure many are tired of seeing the hackneyed, 'Bonnie And Clyde' style epilogue so prevalent in Hollywood films in the 60's onward......plus what other chance to see early Kathy Bates and Theresa Russell in the 70's.

The melody sounds similar to the movie Barbarians at the Gate
I went into this movie thinking it was about an earnest ex con trying to make a fresh start in society and being derailed by a cold uncaring justice system. Not even halfway through I realized it was about an explosively violent pathological criminal that would still be pulling heist if he had a million bucks to his name. Great movie

Would LOVE LOVE LOVE To see this made in present day with someone like Christian Bale as Max, or perhaps Mark Wahlberg - both of whom are right age and right intensity - or perhaps....SEAN PENN! as Max....with a director of major skill....Sidney Lumet would have been perfect, but he's passed on....keep the screenplay EXACTLY as the book, "No Beast So Fierce" and make it a HEAT-like three hour opus of a film, and it will make HEAT look like Mr. Rogers. Hollyood - did you catch all that?
