ZF-5 Five speed swapped 78 F250 walkaround

Bought a 1977 F150 Ranger XLT 4x4 4-speed 351 m400 with a vinyl roof. In Ferrari spanking green. it's been sitting for 8 years got it running no trouble at all with a minor tune-up. after cleaning a minimum of 8 years of desert dust off it I come to find out it's completely factory unmolested with 146,000 miles on it. The best description I can give of this truck is painfully stock painfully. I m loving it. Originally intended to make a rock crawler out of it. But after cleaning it up I just can't do it. I brought it to a Ford dealership where my friend works and they wanted to take pictures for reference when they're working on others. it's a farm truck but also has a full aluminum trim package like I said it's an oddball. and it cracks me up that everything from the climate controls straight down the dashboard to the ashtray and cigarette lighter or 65 66 mustang. I recognized it immediately because I have a 64 1/2. like I said I want to make a rock crawler out of it but anywhere I drive it people crowd around it. it's funny then I get bigger crowds around the truck than I do the mustang. But then again I live near Wickenburg Arizona. If you don't drive a truck or wear a gun you must be from out of town LOL.

They're part of the 335 series, with the Clevland (no separate timing case, funky thermostat that diverts coolant through the heads) The bell pattern is the same because when Ford introduced the 429/460 in 1968 there was only the C6 with that pattern that would put up with the torque.

Love it. I got a 1975 highboy flatbed doing high pinion discbrake front axle right now. Has 16.5 camper special wheels with the hubcaps. It's also getting a zf5

Some of them might have had it, a 4 speed with overdrive was possibly an option in 78/79. (Edited)

@@WesternReloader thats hard to answer.. My info might be wrong, Its hard to find any concrete confirmation of trucks coming with it, but a close ratio Clark 4 speed existed in the 70s, and top gear could be OD. Supposedly it could be had in F150s. And supposedly the bearing and shaft setup wasnt built for the OD setup, at least in a truck application. The torque was hard on them... I've seen claims that trucks had it, and claims against it. I cant find any solid information on it yet. In the 80s there was apparently a Clark OD 5 speed, but never in 70s trucks.

Interesting. About to pick up a '73 F350 Dually with a dump bed. Stock 351M. Been doing a little reading on warming up the 351M and sliding in the 5spd ZF.... since the ZF had provisions for a PTO it might all just work out. Cool rig!

When you do the swap to the zf5 transmission and the transfer case on that 79 truck, Do you use the same drive shaft. Or modified them (cut them out)?

I’m getting ready to swap in a zf5 into my 79 bronco, would all I need is the zf5,Clutch pedal assembly, Clutch kit, Adaptor / flywheel shaved, Hydraulic lines, Clutch cylinder, Modify crossmember, and Shorten/lengthen drive shaft?

Just a small correction the 351M/400 are 335 series not 385 series like the 429/460. The 400/351M are basically a tall deck Cleveland that uses the big block bell housing rather than a small block. The 400 is a great engine though. My cousin had one that was mildly built with just a cam and intake in a highboy thing got 18mpg with a 4speed,4.10 gears and a 2 barrel carb. Thing could scoot pretty damn good

Awesome rig, currently gathering information to do the same swap. Will be going in 400m therefore 400 flywheel, (460 clutch setup as found in comment on bottom), tmyers output shaft adapter... therefore can I use the same starter? Any guidance/recommendations appreciated.

What did the previous owner do the frame to make the BW1356 fit? Looks like he dropped the frame rail down or something? Can you provide a picture or something of that? Is it sketchy? I’ve got the same truck doing the same swap but the 1356 won’t fit between the frame rails

I had a 1356 in my ‘78 it fit just needed to grind a useless piece off the t case. Frame modification is more trouble haha

hi i have a 79 f 150 i did the swap it works good but it has a whining soise it gowes way only when i push the cluch is that normal ?

I have tried this set up. I ran in to issues with clutch. Cause its big 10 spline. Maybe with 400 flywheel it would work?

Yes use the 400 flywheel and pressure plate, with the ZF-5 clutch plate between them!

@@brianbormes6540 messaged you a few times never a reply but I did get the zf5 swapped in my highboy. it lives again. 37.12x50 on Mickey Thompson bullet hole rims, superduty crossover steering and brake master cylinder. 2015 leather interior . Serpentine belt system. It's coming together.
