If you've been studying Dutch for a few weeks you've probably already come across the verbs "zijn", worden" and "blijven." But how do you use them correctly? In this video, I'm giving you a structure and many examples of how you can put these three verbs in a sentence.

Nu weet ik het verschil tussen "zijn" en "worden" wanneer het is met "er" gebruikt. "Er worden gisteren veel ijsjes gegeten" of "Er zijn gisteren op de tafels gedanst". Bedankt voor het filmpje!

Linking verbs are used to link the subject to other parts of the sentence and to fulfill the condition for making a sentence, namely S+V since we cannot, for example, make a sentence by using only a subject and an adjective or only a subject and an adverb of place: "We rijk"...but "we zijn rijk". "Zij ziek"...but "zij wordt ziek". The word "zijn" can also act as a modal verb in, for example, present perfect tense when the sentence uses a motion verb like "komen": Hij is gekomen. Whether I am right or not, I do not know. This is only what I understand about grammar.

Thank you so much for the excellent lesson. Just to make sure I understood this verb: 'worden' is like the German 'werden' and we use it in the sense of 'to become, to get' (angry, sad, etc). Is that it? By the way, I'm quite relieved the Flemish pronunciation is so much softer than the Dutch one (I mean, their excessively harsh way of pronouncing g/ch), my vocal cords wouldn´t survive it:-), oh my.

Hey there Jo, you're very welcome. I don't want to draw too many parallels with equivalents in other languages. "werden" in German (that word also exists in Dutch as the plural of the simple past tense of "worden") does indeed work partially as you said, but you also have the added function of using "werden" as a verb of future tense, more equivalent to "zullen" in Dutch. Hence, I'm avoiding comparisons, because it's just too much of a mess, that's why I developed the schematic overview, rather than relying on translations or equivalents for these words. I'm happy to hear that the Flemish pronunciation isn't too torturous for you. :D

@@noutvandenneste2665 I tried to post my reply thanking you for your kind feedback but it didn´t show. I hope this time it does:-) I totally understand and, please, forgive me for asking that, it´s just that I love comparisons between sister tongues, but I'm actually more interested in the regional languages - I even gave up studying German altogether but not Dutch cause it may help me find material on the regional languages of the Netherlands and its surroundings, as Flemish and the 'Dutch' dialect spoken in northern France. This is just for personal interest and cultural activism, no academic ambitions. Flemish is actually most euphonic to my ears and I'm glad it exists cause I asked a Dutch buddy and he told me that even if I speak Dutch with a Flemish pronunciation the Dutch will still be able to understand me. Well, in my case this will probably just happen at the most on a video chat but I wouldn't dare pronounce the g/ch the Dutch way for anything, my poor vocal cords wouldn´t stand it:-)! Ik houd van Nout:-)! Heel erg bedankt.

The Dutch people that live in the south of the Netherlands ( provinces Noord-Brabant and Limburg) have a much softer g too. Without speaking Flemish. So south-dutch is easier than Northern-dutch to pronounce for non-dutch people
