I hate to say it, but, there was a problem with a few of the AMEL leaders (BILL**2). I just wanted to lay low for a while. I'll be getting back to the boat next week in Trinidad to get Aquarius ready for the season in the Caribbean. Thanks for the nice comment!

Fantastic update of the insurance process. I had no idea that you had to fund all the upfront costs, like mast stepping etc. If you didn't have available money the whole process would be delayed significantly. Wow. All I can say is I'm still staggered you achieved so much in such a short time to get your yacht back up and running. The whole process, working 10 hours a day none stop for week after week must have been mentally and physically exhausting, no wonder you pair have taken time to chill and enjoy different travels. Whatever you did in your career / personal life prior to sailing full time , it clearly paid dividends in having a great skills base during this project, well done 👏

Interesting video. However, must be for US insurance companies. I had a dismasting in the Med a while ago and my german insurance company did neither as for all these papers as they had most of them on file and they don‘t ask you about your experience. A logbook is mandatory so that should be no problem. They also wired 15000 Euros within a day or two to cover for the initial costs. There seems to be a huge difference between the two continents..

So many times I hear people say , " I have insurance that covers me". They forget deductibles and all of the other associated costs to a loss. Have good insurance. In addition to having good insurance it is also best to avoid conditions that could cause a claim. Insurance is to cover losses you can not afford to pay.

Why do people even bother with boat insurance? Can't you just get Liability and ditch the Comprehensive, Collision, Uninsured , Underinsured, and Personal Injury Protection? I only get what is required by law on my car and if there is an accident, I expect to pay for the damage done to my car. Why not drive or sail what you can afford to replace yourself?
@SailingAquariusАй бұрын
Yes, there are many owners of boats that do just this. They get 3rd party liability, and this coverage is relatively inexpensive. But, we opted for the normal coverage, and will continue to do so. Thanks
@rmbriggs52Ай бұрын
I live in the USA and cannot find an insurance company that will cover just liability.
@ratandmonkey2982Ай бұрын
@@rmbriggs52 Is it a requirement to have insurance for by the USCG or the state or marina you dock at?
@rmbriggs52Ай бұрын
I have comprehensive insurance for my 40 ft boat I keep in a marina in the Chesapeake Bay. We were planning a sail to Bermuda but my insurance would not provide any coverage beyond 75 miles offshore. I looked for liability only coverage for a cruise more than 75 miles but I’ve been unable to find any company willing to provide it.
@SailingAquariusАй бұрын
If you want to cruise, Call Gal for insurance :). But, if the insurance company is not offering you insurance because you have never done a crossing, then maybe you will need to get some time with another captain.

You spent 85k and the insurance company paid you 65k. Why the 20k difference? You spoke about that in the beginning of the video.
@SailingAquariusАй бұрын
Because, at the time they paid $65K, I had already paid out $85K. But after completing the work, the insurance company paid the rest of the settlement. Which covered everything that the insurance company owed to us regarding Aquarius' dismasting. I was very happy with just about everyone involved, The broker, the Insurance company, and the Surveyor!
@Rob-r2sАй бұрын

@@SailingAquarius I'm glad that they came through. I hope that this never happens to me but if it does than I guess I'm going to have to talk to the insurance company about what my payout might look like but they never seem to know the answer and when I've dwelt with this with my vehicles, it seems as though they pay something like 80% after paying the deductible. IMHO the bureaucratic quagmire that you just described in this vid totally negates the “freedom, and care free lifestyle” associated with sailing. Add to that the fact that most of the sailing post on youtube involve a constant battle of repairing, and replacing parts, fighting rust etc…….what a damn nightmare and money pit. NO THANKS !!!

To each their own. Get a trailer, but you will find there will also be expenses, and governmental limitations. Buy a house, and see what the government tells you what you can do, and what you can't do to it, and you will have to pay 1% to 2% per year in rent to the government for the right to own a home in the USA. Believe it or not, there are less limitations on a boat, but there would be no convincing you... Cheers.
