I've carried the same Zippo for the last 15 years, used it heavily and it is still in near mint condition. A Zippo is the only type of lighter that I trust in the long run. For one, it has no fragile parts or a pressurized gas system that often fails due to cold weather. I had used my Zippo in all kinds of conditions, from polar freeze and blizzard to tropical humidity and downpours. All it needs is sufficient airflow and sufficient fuel exposed to the spark jet from the flint. Perfect light every time. I only had to replace a few flints and each wick can last up to 2 years. There are THREE tricks to keep your wicks at optimal condition. ONE: When you replace the wick, NEVER let the wick touch the metal sides of the insert casing. Weave it in an S shape and make sure that the wick is surrounded on all sides by fuel soaked cotton. More fuel will be able to be drawn up the wick in this fashion. TWO: Only trim the wick up to one time maximum before replacing it with a new one. Every time you trim the wick, it gets shorter. Shorter wicks do not draw up fuel from the tank that easily. Keep the wick long, and it will deliver more fuel to the flame area. Better burn + longer wick life. THREE: It takes only 40 seconds or less to refuel a Zippo. If you carry one daily, it does not hurt to take a few seconds every day and refill the lighter. Once again, the more fuel that is able to be soaked into the wick, the longer the wick lasts. When you do not have enough fuel, or the fuel is low, the wick itself begins to be consumed, and you will have to replace it more often.

No offense. You kinda described why they suck. I own a few Zippos, but a BIC requires no maintenance and costs much less in fuel and initial cost. I get where you’re coming from but if you talking about trust, leave a zippo for a year, and leave a BIC for the same. I think you can guess which one will actually light. Shoot go 5 years and a BIC will still light. I understand the appeal but in reality they’re not as reliable as you say they are
@BlueSkyCountry4 жыл бұрын
@@mikechivy Your post is spot on point as well... There is a reason why the Zippo is NOT identified with the mainstream, even in the years right after they were invented when butane lighters and sealed fuel cell military trench lighters came onto the scene. Zippos are the manual transmission equivalents of the lighter world. A Zippo is the mark of a seasoned smoker and a man who KNOWS his craft. It is because they demand the user to be somewhat of an engineer and a tinkerer. It is just like hunting with a black powder revolver or rifle as opposed to a modern centerfire bolt action or semiauto rifle... You can't just chamber a round, point it at your target and pull the trigger... You have to know what you are doing to use it properly... HOWEVER, there exists an aftermarket device that blends the best of both worlds of the Zippo and the BIC. Ever heard of Vector KGM??? They produce a wide variety of Zippo inserts that will fit into any standard Zippo case. They are fueled with butane and are available in piezoelectric torch, dual torch, regular flame, and flint ignition regular flame. I am using a Vector insert in my Zippo right now. Flint ignition just like the original, but with butane... You can't even tell the difference except there is no wick in the chimney. One fill is enough for hundreds of lights. Relegate the BIC to a spare backpack pocket and get a Vector for your Zippo if you are EDC'ing a lighter on a constant basis and want the class and attitude of a Zippo...
@mikechivy4 жыл бұрын
@@BlueSkyCountry Fair enough. I was a smoker for 12 years and have quit now for just under 2. At the time a zippo made sense. Now, not so much. Still love a zippo more than any other lighter, just sucks I have to refill it when I just wanna start a grill or roll a J ;-)
@BlueSkyCountry4 жыл бұрын
@@mikechivy Get a Vector insert like I mentioned above. Fill it and use it like a BIC... The lid of the Zippo case flips the "hammer" on the Vector upon opening and that in turn presses down a lever that starts the gas flow. All you have to do is to strike the wheel to ignite it. Lid closes, hammer clicks back and shuts off fuel lever, so no concerns about gas escaping by accident. Vector products are foolproof and reliable.

@@BlueSkyCountry thanks for the tips and advice. I know this is an old thread, but if you get a quick second could you let me know if I’m doing something wrong if I fill the fluid up to the point it drips down into the wick and onto the counter? Only tip I have is, if you have no pliers to take out or insert wick, wrap a piece of sellotape to form a point on the wick. This will allow easy threading through the chimney hole. Took me 40 mins, but I changed it! Woo hoo!

** Tip/Suggestion for Cutting Tool: ** I wasn’t about to go shell out $$ for a specialized wick trimmer (as my zippo-enthusiast friend recommended)… A top rated comment on a random KZbinr’s wick trimming video advised a wire cutter (mine currently MIA), or nail clippers as an alternative (that sounded kind of suss). So I rummaged around what I had around the house and found the PERFECT tool-- You know those little scissors with the curved blades? The ones that come with almost every “basic” manicure, pedicure or facial hair trimming kit? PERFECT! Clean cut. No fraying. And I can cut the wick so it’s below the top cage (if that’s your pref.). Same results as if I had purchased the wick trimmer-but no extra money spent. And because you can maneuver inside the cage, no more accidentally over-pulling the wick and having to cut off usable bits. More flame time, less $$$! Totally just discovered this on a whim and had to share 😄. ** BUT REMEMBER, ->DISCONTINUE

So I did this wick cutting on a Zippo. I'm using Zippo wicks as I only have Zippo wicks on stock and not the Imco brand wicks and I did the first cut. After the first cut, the lighter only lights for a short period of time, one fuel filling only lasts one day and then refuses to light even if there's still a lot of fuel in the tank. And then I remember the 1954 Lighter Repair Manual wherein in one section, they discussed the common problems of lighters turned in for repair. The manual mentioned about the lighter not holding fuel for a reasonable amount of time and with a short wick being stated as the culprit so I replaced the cut wick with a fresh new uncut one off the pack. It solved the problem. Thanks to the manual. Turns out you can't cut a Zippo wick as prescribed in this video by Zippo.

I came back to this video for this specific reason. It had been a very long time since I'd used a Zippo, and I thought it would be good to take a refresher course, lol... I have been trying to trim my wick, but the tweezers only seem to be shredding the top of the wick, rather than pulling it up. I did replace it not too long ago... or maybe it WAS... 9 months, perhaps? I'm not sure... anyway, thanks to the tips I found here, I will just go ahead and replace the wick entirely again. 😊

It is a great device to have on you in case of emergencies. For one thing, the Zippo WILL light under ANY temperature conditions. Even in arctic deep freeze where butane lighters will not work, a Zippo will fire up just fine. However, ALWAYS make sure you have fuel with you as well, stored in a tight, leakproof canister such as the one that most lighter fluids are packaged in.
@generalxanos6 ай бұрын
I would agree it should be in a survival pack, but zippo fuel evaporates even inside the casing. Best just have a spare jug of ronsonol or zippo lighter fluid if you want to do more than make sparks at soggy wood. Trying to run 4 of them, it's almost a weekly job to refill. I'm luccky I haven't had to replace the cotton padding on any of mine, although some of dad's are getting pretty yellow, and a bit stiff. I keep them for sentiment, not function. I like my collection more. :^)

I completely love this lighters, Bought the first one last week and I already have another one. However, 4 days of use (between 5 and 10 lights a day) and I already see an important impact on performance probably because of blacked out wick, because the flame comes from the absolute bottom of the wick I can see, wondering if it can be even dangerous, having in mind the flame could enter where the fuel is? To the point, if it is the wick it doesn't last long, definitely not a year, at least for me. If it is the fuel, I could live with it, but 4 days of use when I filled it I think it is a short life for the fluid, and yes, I use zippo premium fluid. Besides the possible downsides this kind of lighter can have (because of the maintenance) against gas lighters, your zippo lighters have definitely a quality I have yet to see in any gas lighter. They are small pieces of art!

So being a hobby cigar smoker, the intervals between when I do smoke are fairly long apart, so it's kinda strange that the fuel finishes up without much use.

It will evaporate slightly. The design helps though. Keeping the lid closed will allow the gases to build up and allow for a nice light as soon as you flip open the zippo. I'm an avid smoker and i refuel about every weekend.

If you smoke you might have to trim it more than twice a year

You can wrap a small wire around the wick and thread the needle through ! Cut off the wire !

I have absolutely no wick to grab onto anymore trying to use tweasers. Do not use tweasers. It doesn't work at all.

My useless ass doesn't even have tweezers in the house, waiting for them to arrive now. Tried to use two keys as tweezers and now I've fucked the whole wick top to the point its ungrabbable. Guess I have to replace the whole thing now ahahaha ffs

I couldn’t pull the wick out for the life of me

I tried too and cant. Its how the wick is places inside that makes it hard to pull. So, i had to take out the whole thing and push it instead haha
