I had a 283 with a 327/350 hp cam, hump 2.02 heads, gm alum intake, holly 4 bar,shifted at 7000 rpm, 3 speed overdrive in a 39 ford coupe back in the late 60s, great stop sign drag car never got beat that i can remember LOL great video

There is a lot of people that needs to just listen to this man and the way he puts himself out there, He likes what he does and it shows, this entire planet has lost that smile and I am talking about the smile he has when talking about what he does, I so wish that we could bottle that type of work ethic, Nick would be the guy that should go to the schools in his area and talk to the future men and woman that will run this world

My first car was a 65 Malibu SS w. the 283. So Much Fun. And So Reliable. I drove the wheels off that car. GREAT VIDEO AS USUAL. Thanx Nick.

if i was a betting man i would bet u could buy a crate motor for less than it cost to build the 283 with more hp. the older smallblocks have cos tly bearings & such.very nice engine.

I had a 283 with 327 375hp cam, solid lifters, 327 300 hp power pack heads, it shock the building. It would wind, and wind. Wish I still had the car 57 Chevy 2 door post. It would out run 383 Dodge.

Brings back some memories as I'm 68 year old, so I was there back when a 283 was considered as the go-to engine for a budget build. Find you a 283 4-bolt main truck engine and use that for the base. Find some bow-tie heads and a corvette cam- and you were off and running ! {sigh}

Ooops ! Forgot to mention that you have to bore it to 4" for the bow-tie heads or the valves won't clear... but if you are building from a used "dump truck" engine, then this is a good idea anyway.

I had one of these little guys that we put in a 1973 SS Nova after the stock 350 wore out. It wasn't the fastest but for what it was it held its own. It was rock solid,reliable and was very light on gas. That video just took me back a bunch of years.

Buddy of mine put a 283 out of a chevy 2 Into a 78 malibu 2 dr , which originally had a 6 cyl , the 283 was a huge performance upgrade, nice to see people Still respecting older technology.

I know from first hand experience that you can bury the tach on a 283 and it will still climb. Had one in my slingshot and set the shift light at 8800 rpm.

I used to own a '56 GMC that had a blown engine when I got it, found an old 283 from a wrecked corvette, and it was a match made in heaven. Mine sounded the same way after I put it back together, gotta love that throaty small-block rumble!

In highschool I used to have a Chevy luv truck that had a 283 with the old 461 double hump heads,steel crank, a 305 crane cam a single plane Holly intake and 650 double pumper with a power glide tranny . The rear end was a Dana 44 out of a international scout with a 4:11 posi with a set of Mickey Thompson g60 14s and a 125 shot nitrous. Not sure what it made but that little fucker was was really hard to beat from red light to red light. . I was lucky growing up . My father owned a auto parts store and full machine shop so for me it was always play time. That's one motor that I never tore up..

Our neighbor had a '62 Chevy Biscayne Station Wagon with 283 2 barrel and it was one of the smoothest running engines I have ever witnessed. Always started on the first turn and many times the starter was grinded because you could not tell that it was already running.

Van little. I agree, a good running 283 is a smooth engine with the original camshaft, but in this engine we installed a camshaft that is more radical which makes a rumble idle. Thanks for watching Van.

Van Little 283 Engine was a very smooth engine. My dad had a 63 impala with the 283 & while it was running you could put a clear glass of water on the air cleaner & water wouldn't even move like if it would be on a table.

Nick Panaritis Great build! I was wondering what a mild 283 would do. I to had a '62 wagon as a first car it ran great had many miles on her. Replaced her with a 327 with I think a 327 horse GM cam, with a pair of camel hump 194 heads. It was a night and day motor. Miss that first car almost 40 years ago. Love your Videos Nick!

I had the same combo except 2.02 64cc # 186 heads and the 151 350hp cam in my 65 El Camino. It was a darn fine combo 38 plus yrs ago. Seems like yesterday I was shifting those gears at 5500rpm. Man I miss those times. Thanks Myles and Nick P. Yall bring good memories back.

My Dad had a 1960 Corvette with a 283 and dual 4bbls - he still talks fondly about it, despite having sold it in 1966. It had the 4-speed, also. Every 283 I've seen since has been a smooth runner than you can rev out quite a bit, and that makes for some fun.

I had a 2i3 in a 65 Impala heater hose broke drove it home keep it running cooled the radiator down pop the cap stuck the hose in the radiator fro 15 or 20 minutes to cool it down latched the heater hose GOOD TO GOOD

Same motor I had in my 67 malibu. Crane cam and headers with a stock 4bbl manifold and carb. Still went like a bat out of hell, and the idle rumble had me tweaking stuff for hours. lol. Just loved the sound of a chevy small block!

I remember the 283 was a fun motor. Cheap to build compared to small block Fords and Mopars. The problem with them from factory built was to high RPM it would blow up the motor because the crank was not balanced. You had to have them built yourself and balanced. I had one once in a Chevelle with a Muncie 4 speed. On the valve covers it had a label that said built by Tonavanda Brothers Canada. Thanks for the memories.

In 1975 my dad built an engine for my brothers first car, a 1957 Chevy. I remember a little bit about the engine. It was a 283, it had a 120 over bore, 11:1 pop up pistons, Corvette heads, crower cam, Edelbrock high-rise manifold topped off with the 650 Holly double pumper. That engine in a 57 Chevy with stock suspension would pull the left front tire off the ground. Too much power for 16-year-old kids first car so dad pulled the cam out and put a stock 350 cam in it. I wish I could remember more about the engine, I'd like to build one just to see if it's what I remember it to be. I even have a 1995 Geo tracker to put it in.

Almost anything from the '60's & '70's Oldsmobile is the same way the good days for automobiles.... Then doing some extra tricks on the heads etc. You could make some good horsepower... Small block with 400HP. & Big block with 500HP. & mostly with factory parts mind you timing chain & gears don't count same with valve rockers but cams, heads etc. The power is there just need to unleash it....

250 HP at 5400 RPM. That engine could make at the top end of the RPM spectrum ONLY. He's going to need 4.56 gears to be able to drive it. So 76 cc heads on a 283? That's LOW compression. And the 290 HP cam is like .222/.222 duration at .050 on a 114 lobe center? NO bottom end to be expected from that. I wonder if they put dome pistons in it, it certainly would have been the right move. BUT, the sound of being over-cammed and the bright green is what the owner wanted. LOL to each their own.

251hp aint bad for a 283, and then those of us who know these 283s remember that a factory dual quad from 57 puts out 270hp. I get what the customer wanted but this for a 283 is fairly mild considering the bits they used on it, even the one I plan on putting into my 57 210 (an original stock 1957 base model corvette 283) is only pushing 220hp. Gotta love the high reving little monster known as the 283 :)

The neighborhood i grew up in was all old school builds just like 👍 nick Love what he does not many guy's like him left... Back in the 70s you could rummage around the junk yards and find enough parts for building little power houses like these not any more Kudos Nick

The 283 is a great engine. My first build(done in 1963) was a 48 chevrolet stylemaster. 57 283, 63 375hp fuel injection cam and valve springs. carter wcfb carb. 50 olds rear end, 3 speed standard trans. unknown horse power but it pushed the car to an honest 120mph as verified with road mile markers 2 in 60 seconds. Own a LQ4 all cast iron 1999 6l motor in my silverado 2500 4x4. It runs very good.

Hot rodding has always been about having the biggest of everything. The biggest horsepower, cubic inches, torque, you name it. It's SO refreshing to see something else. This 283 looks good and sounds good and stout. Nick built a good little motor for the customers project. It may not have the biggest and best of everything, but I guarantee you that when he goes cruising through the parking lot of the local burger joint or down the streets of Montreal, the sound of that motor will turn heads. Ain't that what it's all about?

lil 283 is a good candidate for a 4-71 supercharger. a satin one would go with the Frankenstein theme.

I'm running a balanced with stat sheets, large journal 327 with camel hump closed chambers double coil K Motion springs bronze guides ,screw in studs, solid cam, roller rockers and Holley 750 DP that flows 1050 CFM the motor turns 9,500 rpm. It's in a 62 nova that I'm tubbing out with a 4 link Morrison kit. Nice to see a Chevy especially an early Chevy SB on your Dyno for a change. Sometimes if you have ported vacum going to those HEI ignitions they over advance so check total your advance at high RPM .

If that only belted out 251 at such a low (for a 283) rpm,, that ain't too shabby. Couldn't help but wonder...What a high compression '83 would do with modern solid lifter cam, and cylinder head technology.

I love big motors but the old small blocks have a special place in my heart from the 299 dodge or the 289 ford or a 327 chevy they all made good reliable power for years and could be built with a little part hunting and they still work today . they can't compete with the new generation but most of us don't drive the new cars.

Many year ago there was a Popular Hot Rodding build "Project 289". Years later a friend showed me a 302 that built using the same mods. The 289 made 275 HP in the article. Food for thought in a Maverick or Fairmont.

There are a few '65 to '68 full size Chevrolet wagons running in NHRA O/SA with a 283 and a powerglide that are deadly consistent on and under the index.

My father had a 1964 Chevrolet Biscayne with a 283 cu. in motor and a 2 speed automatic transmission. $2300 brand new. Always had a problem with the automatic choke and had to stick his black comb in the throttle body to hold the butterfly open in order to start it. Lol. It was a 2 door in Maroon. Not great when you had to load 3 kids into the back seat and one in the front. Lol

The 265 that's in our Chevy 210 has a good note to it too. With the 4 barrel and hooker headers with glass packs on them makes it sound mean. Rev that baby up and it is loud. Just like this zombie motor here, low power but a lot of noise. Unfortunately for the 265 driving it one day in the fall it grenaded with a piece of a connection rod going through the oil pan. Weirdest thing with it was the fact that one side of that piece had no oil touching it. So once the weather breaks ill be taking it apart to see what it looks like inside the block itself.

That little engine will rap up quick. If the rat is light enough that 250hp will put it in motion. I love that rumble idle, it sounded very smooth at high RPM. Best of luck to the owner I hope he really enjoys his new toy!

Islanders Trains my dad used to have a 66 gto in yellow with a 455. Making 500 wheel HP and 500 lb ft. Sold it to a family friend. I look forward to buying it back.

Nick is the man I had a 283 60 over ,12.5 to 1 comp that we got off some kids from Maine that built it back in. Like 1979 that were going to school in Chelsea MA because they had it in camaro and crashed it. So I bought it and put it in a 74 hatch back Nova it was fast. I passed a under cover woman state cop going north on route 1 north at the underpass in lynnfeild doing like 90 mph wow was she pissed lol

I had Stan's of Fremont build a nice 350 for me back in the day. Cheap horsepower, plenty reliable, and I dusted quite a few opponents.

Hey nick .. maybe you forgot but the 283 can spin just a bit past the 8500 RPM line without even breaking a sweat and they do it round after round all day long ...

Those lil 283's are no joke, they will out perform most 350's with factory heads and a lil porting and a good cam

The heads on a 290-horse 350 are part number 93438648 with 76cc chambers.

Nick, I just re-watched this video because I saw the bill video with the actual car that you just posted. I love this little motor. You need to talk to your client about replacing the carb with a self-contained fuel injection unit. It will boat ride in place of the carburetor and it will run a lot better up there in the cold in Canada. I'd like to see you do another 283 build but this time use TrickFlow Super23 heads and a roller cam.

You wont convince anyone that its a 283. The sound will make them think its a set up. Always loved how the small disp. Reved quick. Guess thats why the 5.3 is so popular. My first car was chevy II . I put a L 79 327 from a biscayne in. Pretty quick for stock. Air cooled glide didnt hurt either. If i remember 60mph in first gear. Nice build. Thanks.

From the sound of the cam at idle I would have thought it made more than 251hp. I built a mild 283 for a 65 ElCamino (Father son project) truck. Bored .30 With 1.94 heads, Comp .468 lift Cam, air gap intake, and a 600 4bbl Holley, exhaling through a set of headmen headers it made 300hp

You probably had higher compression. Those 76 cc heads they used are not right for a 283. And I've measured a few of the smog chambers they are usually 3-4 cc larger.

I had a wild 340 mopar cam,in that engine it was street able , then put it into a 273 and it sounded like a rail.Cubes eat a cam's sound as again a 400 ci. Chev. had a cam for street - strip,out it went and into a 305, sounded like a strip only race car.

1 3/4" headers will not make HP for a 283 but 1 5/8" headers will. My 350 uses both and it revs to 8000, the large headers only make power around 6500+

Those 1 5/8 $100 headers make good HP. They were about as good as the 1 3/4 hooker super comps made for my 1959 vette. I keep both pairs. And those cheap ones fit many cars, even the cramped vette

Back in the 70’s we ran a 350 in a mini pulling tractor 13/1 comp Chevrolet second design racing cam and pink rods and we would run it at 10,000 rpm per pull and it was a beast after 6000 rpm never did lose the bottom end but my little brother put it in his 73 chev half ton and finally lost a valve after about 10,000 miles but it would run,pass everything but a gas station.

Cam specs in case you're wondering: Part number 3896962. .450/.460 lift at .050" 222/222 duration 114 LSA Imagine something in the Comp Cams line between a 268H and a 280H (two very popular old school SBC grinds). That cam with those specs in a 283 explains the idle. The 114 LSA should help out the low end a bit as well. All in all, a good (and in this case seemingly lucky) choice for a mild 283.

283 Chev should run about a 64 CC head......like a pair of old camel bump castings. 1.94 intake and a 1.50 exhaust valves ....gotta REALLY pay attention to head chamber volumes, there are SO many casting variants...yeah, putting 76 cc crate motor heads on this little motor would really depreciate the power.

Dad got 28 in a 62 impala with 2 speed power glide. Imagine a overdrive and lookup torque maby 35 mpg.

When I was a teenager my buddy had a 283 in a 66 El Camino that thing was fast for the street toke the engine out put in a 68 c20 and it was a dog. Good engine for something light .

We all can't afford or even want 440's they are great BUT small block Chevy's .OLD 283's 327's were fast/fun cheaper and easy to work on

That Olds the 283 is going into isn't really heavy, so that engine will surprise a lot of people on the streets! Fun power; yes- as Nick says, "the Juice" is loose!
