My wife and I showed this to our ten-year old son recently and we were laughing hysterically during this scene. Afterwards, our son lit into us, saying, "I don't understand why THREE OF HIS FRIENDS DYING is supposed to be FUNNY!" And we couldn't think of how to explain it to him because he actually had a reasonable point. The next scene is Derek at their joint funeral tearfully saying goodbye. It was hard to get across the him the humor of the absurdity, which I can't really blame him 100% for.

Underrated?? He's worth a quarter billion dollars and his movies have been _massively_ successful. Is he as celebrated as Spielberg or Kubrick? No. Of course not. ....but that doesn't mean he's "underrated". Most people know Ben as an actor because most people don't pay attention to directors in general. ...but everyone who knows about movies knows how much range Stiller has. The internet has completely BUTCHERED the word underrated. It's totally meaningless now. I've literally seen people referring to The Beatles as "underrated". Lmfao

I was a fan of Stiller in the 2000s, when he was popular, yes, but also kinda hated by a lot of people due to being so visible in Hollywood's comedy output. He definitely wasn't everyone's cup of tea, I remember being the only one on a film forum / review site that regularly spoke up for him. That was when I still watched new movies. I remember hearing the word "shart" for the first time in Along Came Polly, laughing my ass off at that exchange and how Seymour Hoffman's character came across in general. There were memorable, funny moments even in films like Envy ("up... up and away!") that definitely weren't critical successes, and kind of all over the place with their writing and style. Besides his trademark neurotic guy and fully hammed up roles like Zoolander, Ben actually makes a great straight man when paired up with other comedians. He was great in his Curb episodes, too. I suddenly feel like re-watching some of his films - maybe Mystery Men and Keeping the Faith, and also some that I don't remember anything about, like Duplex.

The first Zoolander is one of the best comedies ever made. The sequel is one of the worst.

this reminds me of a discussion i had once when someone said "violence isnt funny" when watching a movie, but then sometimes it is. its because in movies where the bad guys go flying, hit a thing do a spin then hit another thing then splat on the ground. it's way funnier than just kicking someone in the face.

The very concept of the gasoline fight is hilarious. All they had to do was execute it, and they did and it is one of the funniest things in moviedom.

Zoolander 1+2 are two wonderfully brilliant, stupid films. Comedy masterclass. Great cast and everyone is brilliantly funny. Ben Stiller's films are just great fun.
