Rick, I have 3 questions. I'm asking because I don't know, not because I'm questioning what you're doing. #1. For the oil pickup, can you just drill the 3/8" out and tap 1/2" threads and then add a 1/2" pickup tube?.... #2. Will hot tanking take off all that old paint?.... #3. What, exactly does hot tanking do? Thanks for the information. I'm trying to learn what I can. I'm not an engine builder.
@rickseeman567912 сағат бұрын
Yes that is the plan. Drill it out and tap for 1/2” pickup. When it comes out of the hot tank it should look like a brand new casting.

🏁🏁Big block Mopar's generally have a very good oiling system from the factory. However, one easy modification recommended by Mopar Performance is to enlarge the passages which go from the passenger side main oil galley to the main bearings. This allows extra oil to both the main and rod bearings, and only takes a few minutes to do with any hand drill. 440source carries the special 12" long drill bit required, which should be a standard part in any mechanic's tool box who is building high performance big block Mopar engines. They also provide a diagram.

Interesting theory on the oil demand of the 440 street engines built today, Rick. My old brain says " 3/8" was fine for the six pak (390hp) motors", but I know a lot of folks drill out the pickups on these for the 1/2" pickups. Guess it can't hurt? Tom Hoover, the Chrysler engineer, says to do the mod. He says don't worry about the pressure side of the block, all the passages in the block are big enough, do your work on the suction side. And that's what the Hemi pickup is all about. I'm not going to argue with Tom Hoover. Thanks for watching.

Rick i cant believe you dont have snapon square head sockets. If you ever rebuild a 727 you need them. Plus you dont have a oxy ace torch. Really. If that block was in my shop it would be ready to dip in a hour. First stripper dipped then acid dipped. No paint no rust and ready to head off to machining. I saw you use or say you use wd40. You do know that has solvent in it that attracts moisture and will rust machined areas. I can prove it. I should do a video on the evils of wd40. I went as far as corporate with them demanding to know whats in it. Thus How i know. I am so with you on dont paint oil passages or oil pump mounting areas. Taking out the rough casting in the cam valley is a good plan but not the end of the world if you dont. 50yrs like that and it didnt break off its not likely. But it prettys things up. I have 50yrs into building motors and not one ever failed. But ya can always learn new things that make us better. Oh my method on dowel pins. Heat block with a torch, vice grips and twist out. 30 seconds and done. Oh and i forgot a dist bushing before it got hot tanked once. Oops. Welded a easy out to a shaft then a nut on the other end so it screwd on my slide hammer. Its works to get them out. People just dont know how important block work really is. Its like a foundation of a house.😂

I rebuilt a 727 once but the car would never move again under it's own power. I have a torch but I like the way that thing concentrates the heat on the part and not having to put so much heat on the block. Thanks for watching.

After watching and learning from your great videos. I finally have a tip to pass along. Try after heating a internal bolt/ pipe plug then quench bolt with cool water .
