I love that in every video you show your technique , that same one , instead of arriving a click bait title and show every time something different . It’s very helpful to find a channel with tips to master a technique in different scenarios instead of a ton of videos which are contradictory between each other

Great tips, Steve. Doesn't anchoring the pinky help partly resolve the first three issues---positioning, rotation and picking? Thanks.
@SteveGilson
@SteveGilson 25 күн бұрын
It can, and I do do that sometimes, but when I play anything with complexity then I need my hand to float freely over the strings rather than being anchored to any position.

I play with nails and I like my sound on the classical but on the electric it comes across quite scratchy and not smooth and creamy. I’m very close to cutting my nails but I see you use nails. Any tips?

I did a couple of videos a while back where I used the same techniques with and without nails (currently they're quite short but long enough to touch the strings) Here they are... kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5q6oq2br5eHjZosi=Y9ZytJBl3zk95vhI and kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4eWh3uoZ7aCaJosi=Q3XM9Qt_ATgzImJd

Thanks for the video. I don’t play guitar but I do play the drums. In the past, although not very often, I would get a cramp in one of my hands while eating. It would be so bad I couldn’t hold a fork. It never happened while playing a gig or practicing. Until about 7 months ago I got a cramp in my right hand while playing a gig. Fortunately it didn’t last long and I was able to get through it. After hearing about dystonia, I began to wonder if it could be that. And it doesn’t happen very often; perhaps because I meditate and do the best I can to keep my stress low. Best of luck on your recovery. Cheers! Also, I wonder if leg cramps at night that wake you up out of a deep sleep could be dystonia. The brain is a powerful organ.

Very interesting! I noticed some of those basic chord you played use 4 fret spaces to finger which could be a bit uncomfortable for some. I notice you have quite large hands. 4 notes per string for scales is interesting. So for alternative picking (down,up,down,up) you would use downward pick slanting. Thanks.
@SteveGilson
@SteveGilson 2 ай бұрын
Yes it's definitely a tuning that suits people who have a large stretch! You could probably make either pick slanting approach work, but as it has an even number of notes per string, then it does suit it, yes.

Glad to here you have improved. I slso have dystonia. Could you link to a couple of the research articles you found helpful. I would love to read them. I am currently following the work of Ruth Chiles.
@SteveGilson
@SteveGilson 2 ай бұрын
Probably the most useful one was called "A motor control model of task-specific dystonia and its rehabilitation" You can download the pdf by searching for it on Google Scholar then clicking the PDF link on the left of the search results. That's a good complement to the Ruth Chiles book because it's much more focussed on practical rehab and training rather than meditation type work. Once I'd let go of the stress surrounding dystonia, physical rehab and differential training became the most useful way forward for me. I'm intending to create a follow up video on this, but life is getting in the way a little bit. 🙂

The late, great Allan Holdsworth originally used 5ths tuning to play “Looking Glass” and a a few other tunes, but he later relearned the tunes in standard tuning. On top of being one of the greatest guitarists ever, he was an excellent violinist, and that is probably where he got the idea of using 5ths tuning (violin is tuned in 5ths).

I can think of Lindsay Buckingham, Mark Knofler, and Jeff Beck. The problem I have with fingerstyle on electric is the 1 11/16” neck as opposed to 1 3/4” on my acoustics. So I use fingerstyle only on acoustic and pick on electric. FWIW.

I learned on an old guitar, but very rarely had a pick to play with, so i learned to strum and pick with my fingers. Unfortunately, i never got very good at strumming with a pick. I could pick out solos and suck with a pick, but i always used a method like yours, and it always made me think i was wrong for doing it. Thank you for showing me that it's not wrong. Thank you.

I'm curious: Do you have an online course? Or, is there a certain progression, if that's the word, you like a student to start and end with your videos? That's my issue. I would finish a udemy class, for example, ans then I quit guitar for a long while because I don't know what to do next. Or, I finish a guitar book and then drop playing... My devil is the anxiety around what should be a good skill progression for learning guitar. I am also super picky because I only love fingerstyle.. I don't care much for strumming.
@SteveGilson

My videos really don't have much structure between them. Each week I just filmed something on whatever interested me at the time, or whatever someone chatted to me about and left me thinking "ooh that'd be a good subject for this week!" From a fingerstyle point of view I put together a short playlist where I tried to show a progression in developing the tremolo technique. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHSYY5yCo8ZmedE But this is by no means a course. Hopefully it helps you a little though. I did put a course together for relative newbies who wanted to learn to improvise, but that doesn't touch fingerstyle at all.

Wow! Now that's what I've been looking for, for the 3NPS patterns. I was running up and down the scale sounding like I was playing a scale. Now with those fingerings for each root position I can play anywhere I want and it sounds more melodic and I don't get lost on the fretboard. Thanks, that was a great lesson for me!

Hi Steve - this is really interesting, I've not gigged for two years and have been suffereing with a gradual decline in my playing for probably around four years or so. I've had ulnar nerve decompression surgery which hasn't really helped. My issue is very similar to yours in my right hand, except I use a pick, which I can't do now. I've decided to stop fighting it and have a rest for a while. I really hope you see some improvement. I have a follow up with neurology soon, lets hope they come good for us.
@SteveGilson
@SteveGilson 4 ай бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that, but I hope the neurologist can give you a diagnosis. I know of a few guitarists who've developed it when playing with a pick, so it's a possibility, but wait and see. It doesn't seem to be restricted to any particular area or muscle group. Other than the fact that the area is highly trained and performs very focussed and intricate movement. For example I know trumpet players who have it in their lips. I'm good friends with a singer who has developed it in her vocal chords. I truly believe that there's a route out of it though. I've improved dramatically compared to the old days, and feel like I'm improving every day so there's hope.
