From what you're saying, it sounds like you wish you had taken a greater variety of courses. That's the advice I'd give: don't focus all your coursework in one area. Instead, explore different fields. Take challenging courses across various subjects and ask friends from other specializations for recommendations on great courses from their curricula (e.g., if you are studying software engineering as your specialization, also take courses on computer architectures, integrated cirtuits, robotics, data science, game development and so on). This approach is more enjoyable and rewarding than concentrating solely on, say, data science. You'll build a strong foundation of knowledge and be more adaptable in today's uncertain job market. Additionally, you'll be able to understand different viewpoints and lead teams more effectively.

my college i still think in terms of javascript. c++ doesn't exist for me, but i can work in C, or Rust. i'm a web developer though, I think in data structures and i wish there were some data structures that existed in javascript that only exist in other languages like php, i'm also RESTful developer and i know SOAP. and frankly i like soap better for some things. i would say learn linux, because it will allow you to understand computers more on a deeper level, and if you are a web developer you definitely need to know linux, it makes AWS and docker a cakewalk. well maybe not a cakewalk but you can navigate and manage containers much easier if you know your way around a bash terminal

To be honest, everyone always says "create something to solve a problem you have" so that way you can make something you're passionate about. But I really have trouble thinking of something I'm having a problem with and if I CAN think of it then the tool likely already exists. I don't know if I'm just not thinking about it enough or what but that tip has never really worked for me since most of the problems I encounter tend to be solved already.

I don't really see the point of college for CS magors as it stands. Why pay 20k-70k as a broke student and spend 4 years learning a bunch useless time filler courses when you will never end up using them. Not to mention that some of the best educators on the planet (including Harvard courses) have free resources where you can learn whatever tech you want. Then and get a job.within 1-2 years. As for networking there are plenty of avenues for that. It not a logical move given the time and money cost compared to what you get FOR FREE with more time on your hands.

it becomes harder and harder to make friends as you progress in life or when you're out of school because you're either an introverted person, or because you never really developed these skills... you were just around kids that would talk to you all the time in school... if you set an extroverted to a new town where they have to start fresh, they're making friends EASILY :)

Education: Classes and Learning - Regrets: Sayhyun regrets focusing too narrowly on just obtaining a degree and a job, rather than appreciating the education itself. They also regret not taking more challenging and varied courses. - Do's: Emphasize taking challenging computer science classes to build a strong foundational knowledge. - Don'ts: Avoid the mindset of just aiming for a degree. Neglecting the educational content can diminish long-term benefits. Elective Courses and Broad Interests - Regrets: Sayhyun regrets choosing easy electives instead of courses in areas of genuine interest such as philosophy, psychology, or creative writing. - Do's: Select electives based on personal interests, which can enhance engagement and application in future endeavors. - Don'ts: Don't choose courses solely based on ease or convenience, as this can lead to missed opportunities for enriching experiences. Side Projects - Regrets: Sayhyun regrets not making their side projects bigger and more public to receive real-world feedback. - Do's: Use breaks to focus on side projects, choose projects that align with genuine interests, and make them as substantial and public as possible. - Don'ts: Avoid cramming side projects during busy semesters or choosing projects just because they have complete tutorials available. Recruiting and Career Preparation - Do's: Prepare for job applications and interviews during the off-semester periods to maximize focus and effectiveness. - Don'ts: Don't wait until the last minute to update resumes or prepare for interviews during busy academic periods. Time Management - Regrets: Sayhyun regrets not managing their time effectively, which led to poor health and less efficient studying. - Do's: Learn and apply effective time management strategies to balance school, projects, and personal life. - Don'ts: Avoid wasting time on inefficient study habits or unnecessary all-nighters, which don't contribute to genuine productivity. Socializing and Networking - Regrets: Sayhyun regrets not making more lasting connections during college. - Do's: Take advantage of the college environment to make and deepen friendships, which can be harder to do later in life. - Don'ts: Don't isolate yourself; engage actively with peers and participate in communal activities and events.

Great video!! But I have one quick question: I got accepted to UM this fall to study CS (and potentially minor in Bio) and have a lot on my plate this year: UROP, Residential College stuff, Kessler Scholars, and potentially learning Chinese for my language requirement. I am not that great at time management, but I seriously feel like this is too much, especially for a freshman 😬 What are your thoughts??
@Sayhyuun
@Sayhyuun 7 күн бұрын
it’s tough for me to gauge since i don’t know how much time UROP / Residential College / Kessler Scholars will take. Also, I don’t know what your previous experience with CS is. If this is your first CS class ever, you will potentially have to spend an abnormal amount of time understanding programming at first, I’ve seen it before. My suggestion is to plan around everything at first and pay close attention to how much time it takes. You seem smart, you might be able to do it all. And if you can’t, it’s simply a matter of having to prioritize one thing over the other, whatever you feel like pursuing. Best of luck!

Back to time management, for some background I’m a CS major 2 years in with mostly A’s and my first semester sucked got awful grades stopped working out, I figured out the grades part by the end of year 1, and end of year 2 I have both. My biggest piece of advice is wake up early and do the things that you’ll do to procrastinate later, I go to the gym at 6 because I enjoy it and it’s good for me and if I don’t then after work I will go to the gym instead of do homework. I promise waking up earlier and going to bed earlier will sky rocket productivity as for most of us the last 3 hours of our day is playing games or watching some form of media. I will say waking up and doing homework is also a great strategy if you have a space to be productive

I'm going back to college to do Electrical Engineering in my ealry 20's. I want to learn the foundation of technology that is beneficial for me later in AI/ML . EE is the heart of technology and EECS strongly overlaps each other. My small advice is CS, EE are hard, you'll feel overwhelmed. Math is important, you will love math once you know how math is close to our lifes. Just because I hated math since little. I got my GED last year, currently in community college.

As someone who's going into uni for CS this fall, I just want to thank you for sharing this awesome advice! It made me reconsider a lot of things that I had originally planned (for example taking bird courses in place of courses I'd actually find interesting) or trying to do everything at the same time (school, side-projects, LeetCode, interview prep, etc...). I also really liked the emphasis on time management and making friends as I feel those are the two things that people (myself included) often overlook when it comes to college. TL;DR: Cool video, loved the advice!

As someone who is 30, and seriously considering a career change into CS via online college, I’m taking mental notes of what you’re saying. Pick the hardest courses and learn them. Thank you for this video, I really appreciate it. PS, do you have any specific things that would help somebody stand out in this field? I’ve heard the doomers say a CS degree isn’t worth it… But the only other thing that interests me is something in Finance (which doomers also say is saturated and highly competitive…). Thanks

Do you have any advice for transferring into University of Michigan? I am in a similar position as you were.
@Sayhyuun
@Sayhyuun 8 күн бұрын
as a disclaimer, i transferred 7 years ago, which is a long time ago so a lot of what i say might not hold up. Try to find all the resources for transferring on their website and reach out to them directly, aim to push to transfer ASAP which would be likely 1-2 years. In the meantime, make sure to only take classes that will transfer credits to Michigan, and avoid the “mandatory” classes at your current school since they won’t be relevant

Loved this! It honestly couldn't have come at a better time for me, since, fingers crossed, I'm finishing uni december of next year. I feel like I've wasted my early years (mainly due to the pandemic but also impostor syndrome seeing how there's classmates that are actual monsters because of how much they know and o) but I feel like I'm _finally_ kinda getting things back on track. One of the things that have become more difficult to me than usual (part of ADHD I guess) is studying for classes that I really don't like (like accounting and a Java/C# project that's being more frustrating than anything lol) and having side projects and things I'd like to learn more on my mind. At least I found out that I want to specialise on cybersec and I've been trying to grind that as much as I can so I guess that's nice :D

Recruiting season depends on which period of time you’re looking for the full-time job / internship e.g. summer 2025 internships would come out late July / early August and recruiters would come to the school in September so you would want to be prepared by then!

College is the one place where future millionaires and billionaires will be in one central place My advice for anyone who decides to go is to make it worth it Major in STEM or really consider picking up a trade if not STEM Network, network, network.
