More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

I really enjoyed this down to earth look at retirement. Im 62 with 40-years at the same employer. I'm finally allowing myself to go from dreaming about retirement to taking meaningful action. Wills & advanced directives done. Assessing budget done. Meeting with financial planner in-process. In my mind, this is the heavy lifting and completing each task is a step closer. Its strange, and maybe others have felt this, but its almost like I'm waiting for someone to say "hey, it's all good... you can do this now". In reality the only permission you need comes from the mirror.

I love this debate and suspect there is no right answer for everyone. I'm on the Scottish hills every weekend and run hot so Goretex wets out on me in heavy rain - usually after 2 or 3 hours of constant deluge in the lighter jackets and after 4 or 5 hours with the 'bomber' hard shells. The only two things that I have found to work is to take a second jacket (and ideally base/mid-layer) or hike fast enough to keep warm (though this means you can't stop for more than a couple of minutes at a time before you get cold). Don't think I would trust Paramo for a 10 to 14 hour day in the Cairngorms but I could be wrong! I'll keep searching for that elusive perfect jacket 🙂

If your getting wet in paramo you’re doing something wrong because its you that has to wash and proof it. Ive used it all over the world in all kinds of environments and weather for over 20 years. I also use it for work outdoors every day through every winter and never been wet. I think a better understanding of how it works is needed before dissing something that you don’t fully understand the workings of.

Way back in the 70's a rich old Scots fella who owned a road marking company gave me several bits of advice when I was wiring his house as an apprentice electrician. He said if you haven't started to think about your future when your 20, started to put the plan in place by 30 and achieved your goal by 40 then you will never be able to retire selling your life for bits of paper (now plastic notes). Also said don't get caught up in the silly game of buying stuff you don't need with money you don't have to try and impress people you don't know. If hard work was that good for you the rich would do it all and the poor would not get a look in. Lastly you will have a little money working for someone else, a bit more self employed and the skys the limit if you employ others. PS I had my mortgage paid off by 43 and retired at 45 now almost 70 and happy with my life, bicycle, allotment & home brew beer & wine...

The idea of early retirement varies from country to country. In countries with high inflation, no/less government charity to people with no work, early retirement could be a bad idea. Plus, the salary one earns during 45+ age is generally way way more than what one earns during 25-40 age

I'm not sure what has happened in the USA but life is not fun anymore and dating became impossible.

It doesn't fail, it's designed to get wet so the inner liner starts to wick moisture away if you keep moving. Yes, you will get moist, but you will stay warm and the jacket will eventually dry. I've worn Paramo doing the Cullin ridge traverse, A' Mhaighdean, Aonach Eagach and Mt St. Elias in America, and it's worked as intended during gale-force winds, tropical torrential downpours, blizzards etc. and never failed. The one thing that's an absolute must with Paramo though is the correct sizing, too tight, or if you're wearing with a pack, and it''ll impact the breath-ability around the back/shoulder area, and that means the liner won't wick effectively. That could be happening here.

Retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My parents both spent same number of years in the civil service, but my mom was investing through a wealth manager, and my dad through the 401k.

This is true. I'm in my mid 50's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

Its unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $287k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

Thank you for this fresh 'early retirement' video. I basically retired at age 47 and moved to a beautiful and affordable Central American country. Best 'mistake' I ever made... hahahaha... I have my little projects and a new love - my partner now for 14 years. I left the USA 17 years ago. I live in a 'walkable' UNESCO world heritage city of 50,000 people. It takes some faith to take the leap, but the pay off is great. Luckily for me I had some very 'high income' years in my career in advertising in NYC. I am 63 years old now and am thinking I may start collecting my Social Security early... the monthly on that pretty much covers my expenses here (probably not in the US though)... in 2 more years I have an annuity that 'pops' open and will have an additional $1,000 a month. Had cancer last year... difficult for sure but 100% cancer free now!!! Sure did, however, change my thoughts on the uncertainty of the future. Changed my perspective. TIME - NO one knows how many years we have - probably the best point made in your video. Thank you again for sharing.

I think the retirement crisis will get even worse. A lot of people can’t save because of low paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates. And now that home ownership is out of reach for middle class Americans, they won’t have a house to retire with either.

Great talk. Even for the people that love their jobs, at some point you value time more than money, especially in most Western countries (i.e. Canada, USA, UK, Germany etc.) where you can lose up to 70% of your income to taxes and fees. Its hard to put in a 50 hour work week, only to be left with 30% in spending power, which consistently gets eroded through inflation due to money printing and the impact of more debt being created under fractional reserve banking. I'm mid-50s and have my own consulting company. I have gone almost completely digital, built my team offshore and pull out enough money to live within my means. I spend less and have adjusted my lifestyle. I no longer need a Mercedes, a big house, expensive vacations and a Rolex, etc. I'm happy with my Mazda, Casio, driving to my vacation spot and a smaller home. It no longer pays to work hard, so why give up my sanity and mental health to support a bankrupt and corrupt system.

I worked nearly twenty years for a company, owners made millions a year, they retire sell company for millions, all I got was my 401k.
