The fact that Vader didn't simply glass the planet, and his old friends along with it, in an effort to bury his past, is a pretty remarkable slip for him.
@Supperdude9
@Supperdude9 Жыл бұрын
I don't think he could have brought himself to do it. Besides his mother, his friends were his sole comfort in that life of slavery. The only shining good part of that past life. They shared their love of podracing, they built stuff together. That's a bond you can't bury, and if you try, it's going to have to be buried DEEP. Vader still has a slice of humanity left. Otherwise he wouldn't have bothered to save his son in Return. Perhaps this event helped maintain it.

It's beautiful how much Luke's existence rattled Vader's entire worldview. He was taught by Palpatine that the past should be destroyed, as it only brought him pain, and for the most part, that was true. He had lost everything and was left as a broken man, only left with his hatred and desire to destroy the past. Luke was an exception to that rule, as he was the part of the past that brought Vader Joy, which made him the first thing Vader didn't want to destroy. From that point, it reawakened the part of him that knew that his past wasn't only a source of pain and regret.

Luke was an extension of Padme, the person he loved the most in the world apart from his mother. When Luke was found alive and when Luke believed there was still good in him, like his late wife did, it completely destroyed all of the insidiousness that the emperor planted in him. Truly a beautiful redemption story.

[Both Obi-Wan and Anakin shed tears] Obi-Wan : I accessed the brightest corner of your memory system. It's a very beautiful memory, Anakin. Thank you. Anakin : “I didn't know I still had that. If he had been able to survive, he might have had time to change, but the Emperor's lightning fried his life support circuits. Immediate medical attention might have saved him but the Death Star was in the process of being blown up, there was no time. He wanted to live and love, but time worked against him and the best he could do is make his peace with himself.

There's also an exchange Vader had with Darth Maul: *Maul:* "What could you possibly hate so much to be this powerful?" *Vader:* "Myself." More than anything else, even more than Palpatine for manipulating and using him the way he did, Vader hates _himself_ for all of the horrible things he's done and falling for Palpatine's lies and manipulations, but until he found Luke & Leia and realized _they_ were his children, Palpatine was all Vader had left. So in Vader's eyes, killing Palpatine would leave him truly alone in the galaxy, hence why he never turned on Palpatine until Palpatine was about to kill Luke. Vader hated himself so much that he genuinely believed that he didn't _deserve_ to be happy. And yet, it was Luke's unconditional love and faith in his father than finally saved Anakin.

In retrospect, that simple scene in The Empire Strikes Back, where admiral Piett informs Vader of something, it’s a far more human “Yes, admiral; what is it?” Than plentiful of his usual responses… But on the other hand, according to either canon or theories online, he respected Piett far more than his predecessor (even when he f’d up) than Ozzel… supposedly because Ozzel’s title at the time was nothing short of pure nepotism while Piett actually had skill & respect…
@viix3815
@viix3815 Жыл бұрын
@@schwenda3727 If there is anything Vader hates equally to slavery, it is nepotism and incompetence in one package. Vader hated Thrawn and Tarkin. Both of which rose through the ranks by the Emperor's will. But they had the skittlez to back their ranks up. It was the stupidity and arrogance of Ozzel that got him crossed off the census.
@rev0568
@rev0568 Жыл бұрын
@@viix3815🤔 I'm fairly certain he moreso hated Thrawn because he knew who Vader used to be and called him out on it, not so much because he rose through the ranks via the Emperor, and he hated Tarkin because he was reduced to being his lapdog on a few occasions where he could do nothing because of the emperors protection, something Tarkin also called him out on. Considering Thrawn was the most competent, or near enough to the most, military leader in the Empire. Vader wouldn't have cared if he was fast tracked by the Emperor so long as he was good at his job, and he was one of the best.
@viix3815
@viix3815 Жыл бұрын
@@rev0568 Vader hated a lot of people for a lot of reasons. I do believe there was a statement from one person in one book (I read so many) that he hated anyone who got special treatment, or rose so fast through the ranks. But he also respected anyone who could produce results. The difference between Piett and Ozzel is that Ozzel had an undeserved rank, and that was why Vader had 0 fs to give about killing him. Piett actually had tried to stop Ozzel but was over ruled. This is also why Vader hated Moffs. They were lazy, incompetent and arrogant. Vader often killed for no reason. But he never exactly targeted those people. But there were members of the upper echelons that Vader did target. Just because he hated their work ethic. Tarkin. He hated him. But even without the Emperor there, Tarkin was a hard worker, and earned his spot. There was a grudging respect. There is the issue between 'legends' now and 'Disney'. But Legends always stuck with me more.

ONLY to go to the Jedi and be denied training. Have the only father figure he ever had killed. Be told that he can't have feelings for one of the people he loved most. And then told that he can't save his mother, the other person he loves most. And during the entirety of his time as Jedi, he was ridiculed, scrutinized, judged, and berated. Yeah , although I really like the prequels, I think they touched the slavery topic and all the factors that slowly piled in in Anakin's backstory to make him eventually turn into the war criminal he became in a very light hearted way, to a point that one really often dismisses it , and I guess it was because those prequels back in the day were supposed to be written as a family friendlly franchise (the most they could do in terms of "darkness" was the Revenge of the Sith" tho cause there's no light hearted way of telling THAT story , and even by that I still remember newscasts warning people of being careful with bringing kids too young due to the "gruesome images" in my country). Nowadays with shows like Andor, Obi Wan , and all the starwars spin offs there has been more chance of dueling in a more darker way of telling these stories so the psychological weight of the characters are more evident . It would've been badass if Anakin's childhood had had the "Andor style" story telling treatment.

I kinda like the idea of rare moments of Vader doing good deeds, something that could never be allowed for the general public to know, as it'd kinda undermine his purpose of being seen as a purely terrifying symbol and enforcer of the Emperor's will. These moments of being forced to reflect on himself also really help build up to that final moment, like he had to slowly be nudged towards it over many years instead of suddenly changing his entire, deeply engrained Sith mentality, just because Luke was about to die

Not necessarily free him from the Dark Side, but he finally had a purpose in life and could rule the Empire together with family and perhaps even kill Palpatine. And that Padmé didn't die in vain. That's why he didn't kill Needa at the end of Ep5 and why he's so soft in this comic. If this was pre-Episode 5 or even pre-Episode 4 timeline, Vader would've either let the beasts kill his old friends or cut them all down.

One of the very, very few moments of Vader doing something nice for others. There has been times where he rewards those that prove successful and useful to the Empires cause, but this came from Anakin/Vader. Despite how much darkness was around him, in him, running through him he still went out of his way to stop the governor especially when Vader himself couldn’t see it.

The time period is very important for stories like this. If it happened before his confrontation with luke it undermines the eventual breaking of the darkside and Sidius' hold on him. It was meeting his son on cloud city and his son almost dying that cracked the prison of evil he had been trapped in. Before that he would never be looking into padme's death in the first place. His walls were up so thick he couldn't sense he familial connection to Leia. If he hadn't been closed to everything other that hate a power he would have had visions of his children the way anakin did with his mother and padme.

Moments like these are what makes me appreciate RotJ so much more than Empire. Though most people say Empire is the better movie and has better highs and less lows, to which I can agree to some respect, I genuinely don’t think anything can top the whole last part with Luke and Vader finally interacting. Luke has no malice towards the man he knows as his father but instead a hopefulness towards him, knowing there is good within the man despite all he’s done wrong (it’s the tie in comics and everything else imho that starts taking away the idea of a redemption for Vader) and tries his best to bring him back to that time where he was a Jedi too. In this, we see not only has Luke become a true Jedi, a man able to set aside feelings of hate and anger and instead putting forth ideas of hope and goodness, but see that the man known as Anakin is still in there but he has been hiding from his pain and guilt by masking it with rage. Times that we can glimpse that Vader still has good in him reinforce this idea and really build up just why Luke can really be called the one true Jedi, not because he is the last (sorry, I just shivered typing those two words near each other), but because unlike many of those within the Order, Luke doesn’t immediately swat away the ideas of enemies being irredeemable villains. Even when Luke gets the closest to giving in to the dark side when he’s batting away Vader’s saber and being ordered to kill him by Palpatine, he calms himself and appeals to Vader’s sense of right even on the verge of death by lightning. And of course, this is all without bringing in the Disney fanfic that people are saying are canon movies.

Vader was purely on a downward spiral. His fall started when he betrayed the Jedi Order, murdered younglings, was responsible for his wife's murder and fought the closest thing to a brother he had. After doing all of that, he knew that he had become a monster beyond redemption. All he had was the Dark Side, that brough him only suffering, and Palpatine, who was the only relationship he had left, even if it was an abusive and toxic one.

Like when he just stopped and starred into his own thoughts when he realized who he was talking to is hilarious and the moment they’re like “ can I help yo…” “No” and Vader stomps off trying to be evil but Anakin not letting his friends get hurt and Vader once again stomps off like a toddler. The idea of Vader on a pod racer is hilarious. He was being very childish this issue

Vader being an "under the table" anti-hero makes sense and its cool to see what the Empire could do if it was used like the Star Trek's Federation rather than a bloated self indulgent Empire. The Imperials could be a major force for good in the Galaxy if they wished it.

Honestly a great story from Disney. The implementation of these familiar faces in the story doesn’t feel shoehorned, it actually contributes to the overarching narrative of the story and shows the light in Vader, a theme called upon in the original trilogy as well. He’s not evil, he’s just depressed into submission. He insists Anakin is dead because he cannot accept the reality that Anakin is very much alive and still within him. This isn’t a throw away story, it’s emblematic of Vader’s character as a whole. Love to see it

Too bad Disney isn't up for doing alternate versions of Star wars, cause I have ideas but know I wouldn't get paid for them. This was interesting. He saved his old friends, and honestly was heroic, because a true hero never needs to be praised, because they see it as"just doing my job" and that's what he was basically doing without words. It shows he's not completely dark.
