I’ve even purchased a new radiator and new cap but still have the car heating up to 102-104 sitting at lights and on average 30 degree driving it will go between 94-97 and up hill drives will see it rise to 110 and thermo fans kick on at 109. Sticky thermostat? Ve Sv6, giving me grief

Wow I’ll give this a go thanks. I just got a VE series 2, vents have all been working fine, until today, stayed stuck on feet, could change to windscreen also worked, but nothing on face, except very light. Not sure why, but suddenly started working properly again second time I turned the car off, then back on again

G'day Meat. The vac bleeders are good at getting fluid quick through dry systems, however it's always best with 2 people doing the final bleed. Best advice I got from an old timer when doing my apprentiship was to gravity bleed for a while, and close the bleeder when the pedal is half way down before locking it up, especially on old cars. They can suck a few bubbles back in after the pedal hits the floor. A bit of grease around the bleeder threads help with air.
@MeatballGarageАй бұрын
G'day mate! Agree 100% I can see how these tools would be useful for that. I suppose in hindsight if i knew what i knew now i wouldn't have bothered and just done the two person method..but it's always fun trying something new! Great tip with the final bleed too mate, will try these next time I flush it out! Cheers!

G'day everyone! Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed please give the vid a thumbs up! Anyone else had drama with those vacuum/suction brake bleeder kits? The pedal feel wasn't light and day difference but I feel much better now knowing that there is fresh fluid in it! Cheers - Marc

Don't think that is how it works mate. I could have poured in liquid gold or camel piss and I still would have created an air pocket cause i didn't bleed the system correctly - leading to running the pump dry which they don't like.

Why do you have no carby spacer to stop fuel evaporation heat from manifold to Carby ?
@MeatballGarage2 ай бұрын
G’day mate - comes down to clearance. This manifold and the air cleaner I run, even with a drop base, there is bugger all clearance under the bonnet. I have a shorter air cleaner to try and if i can pick up some room will grab a spacer - with that will mean a change in jetting too apparently, but it does help clean up distribution.

I had run the factory OEM waterpump since new, recall replacing the original thermostat without any issues until I finally replaced the waterpump then problems appeared. Troubleshooting this, I noticed the incorrect thermostat was installed (apparently a very common error at one time). My solution was to reduce the bypass restrictor orifice diameter to 1/4 inch, so that nobody would make this mistake again in the future.
@MeatballGarage2 ай бұрын
Mate that is a great tip!! Nicely done! I can’t believe how the incorrect part was being fitted for years (and the internet arguments that followed!!!) Thanks for sharing!
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking22592 ай бұрын
@@MeatballGarage I wasn't aware this issue even existed until the waterpump change. I think the original waterpump may have had a smaller recirculation diameter. Too bad I didn't know, didn't compare with the new pump, just tossed it on and that's when problems started happening. I suspect the replacement pumps must have a larger recirculation port than the factory pumps did. Anyway, maybe this is the source of argument, hard to say for sure. Maybe there's a shutoff valve for the heater core on some clevos, this would reduce bypass recirculation as well. It wasn't till I'd replaced the pump then WTF, this thing runs too hot so I wen't looking for a solution and discovered the bypass plate. The Pantera guys said reduce diameter to 1/4" and this worked for me.

Hey mate ,finally got round to changing thermostat to the Clevo as you recommended. Also fitted new temp sensor to block .all good ,now the dash gauge worked when car got to running temp ,so typed up coolant and put cap on radiator, now temp gauge comes up a bit then decides it needs a rest and not work , but will then start to come up then go down again m. Do you use dash gauge or can u recommend an aftermarket one at all . Thanks again for that video 👍
@MeatballGarage3 ай бұрын
G'day Ian! Ahh bugger - I bloody hate dash gremlins. What temp gauge are you using? (GT style, factory style) Where is the sender located in the block and is it the correct sender? In my factory dash - i think i had an incorrect sender as the gauge was really happy - and fluctuated between 1/4 and 3/4 when the fan would go on and off! I use the GT style gauge and it behaves reasonably accurately to what my old mechanical one did. If you can get a cheapo mechanical gauge in just to verify what the car runs at at idle/cruise etc. that would be the way to go. As long as you get something with numbers that are easy to read and in the temp range of the clevo you should be sweet. If all is well, from there you can start to trouble shoot the factory gauges issues.....or do what i want to do and give it to an auto elec to figure it out 😁 Cheers mate and let us know how you go!

This car cruises quietly but is loud as shit when you step on it. The GT which has a factory style system has a great cruise burble but is relatively quiet under WOT. At some stage id look at replacing the mufflers on the Fairmont with something that takes the raspyness out of the note. Cheers!

Bleed every bubble from your engine from the top of your radiator cap with a Repco Radiator bucket then you know there is zero air pockets in the engine and entire cooling system. And NEVER mix different grades of coolant like you did. The green and yellow coolant are not good for Old School Engines as they have a corrosive inhibitor in them. Use ALWAYS Penrite Old School Classic Radiator Coolant which you mix with water.
@MeatballGarage3 ай бұрын
Spot on - bleeding is bloody important! I usually just jack mine up a little, never had one of those buckets but should really invest. They look like a great bit of kit. Agree never mix coolants - I just used a concentrate and demineralised water so am sweet. Never considered the 'old school coolant', will have to check it out. I like to flush mine every 12 months or so in which case I might switch to it - thanks for the tip!
@stevepierce35094 ай бұрын
Mate you didn't need to go to that extreme. Get your hands on a genuine FoMoCo Radiator for a V8 and all your problems would be solved. Putting in this doesn't look or match the vehicle whatsoever and could have been way easier achieved given I run an XW GT 351 in the NT where its way hotter than where you are based with a 160 thermostat and no issues whatsoever. The only time it gets to 180 is when I pull up and turn it off , then when I start the engine back up it drops almost instantly back to 160. And even at lights in traffic.
@MeatballGarage3 ай бұрын
G’day mate, Ahh the old original vs modern cooling debate! This car had the cross flow in it already, so was keen to just work with what I had. I found the mechanical fan worked fine but ended up getting hot when in Melbournes slow moving traffic. The thermo was able to keep the temperature steady even when crawling along in a traffic jam on a hot day. I suppose the cooling discussion always comes down to what suits your application and use case. Plenty of blokes have told me original is the way to go - others have said go a big alloy rad and thermo fans. To be honest, as long as it works I couldn’t care less! I do like the simplicity and reliability of a mechanical fan though…but also love the extra hp gained by not having an engine fan (and less risk taking a finger off when playing with the carby too)! Cheers mate!

G'day mate! Cheers she has a great chop at idle this thing, but I reckon its a bit raspy up top. It has Pacemaker 1 & 3/4 4 into 1 headers on it, then its into a 2 1/2 inch system with a balance pipe and one straight through muffler (no idea what brand) each side. It sounds great at cruise and when you pound it (its loud). I have heard smaller, simpler systems sound good too. If your car is low - id steer clear of 4 into 1s as mine scrape bloody everywhere at the collector flange. Should have gone try ys. What is on yours now? Cheers!
