Excellent video and information. I drove out towards that area about 2 months ago from the Phoenix area going West past Palo Verde towards Hyder, but did not make it to the derailment location site. There is still regular freight traffic to Palo Verde, but nothing that I'm aware of beyond that going West past there until you get to Roll and that is accessed from Wellton.

The rails were spread and flagged at Agua Caliente Rd. but they recently moved the anode cars that had been sitting stored at Harqua AZ for years to Arlington recently. Also, if you watch my other videos, you will see that several trestles have been burned west of Saddle AZ.

@@W7DSY Interestingly enough I was bored and stumbled across that deadline of flatcars on Google Satellite just yesterday. I had no idea what they were based on the satellite photos but I was going to travel out there to find out myself, so thanks for saving me the trip! I'm really happy to see that more people are talking about the 96' incident and the Phoenix Line itself due to the talk of bringing Amtrak back to Phoenix. I was born in 02' so I wasn't there for Southern Pacific or Amtrak in Phoenix but growing up I always wondered what exactly the SPs tracks looked like. I really hope that the attention you and others keep bringing to the line helps to bolster support to repair it!

As you were filming the activity at Matthie, you were standing between the rails on one leg of the wye. In addition to trespassing on private property, you comletely disregard all respect for your own safety. Wickenburg and Matthie recall memories of working with rail and tie replacement gangs back in the early 1980's on the 4th District.
@W7DSY4 ай бұрын
If you will notice the rails are rusty, and that's because this leg of the wye is DISCONNECTED at both ends from all live tracks as it has been for a number of years. So I was in no danger.
@glennfoster24234 ай бұрын
@W7DSY I admit I was hasty and not familiar with the current current "out of service" wye status. When I was a supervisor working with the tie gang in 1980, the wye was very much in service and thus provoked the comment. Generally, fouling a track is not a safe practice sans proper protection.

The adobe house I used to own in Apple Valley CA had many large timbers and hardware from the T&T used to support the porch roof overhang around the house. The beams were acquired by Newt Bass to build the Apple Valley Inn in 1948. The person who built my house in 1954 worked for Bass and was able to get left over timbers. for his house.

These are early calibration points for satellites and for other areial photo systems on a 1 mile grid for gross calibration. they would also roll out a large tarp with smaller calibration targets on them. My dad was an engineer at lockeed and at the open house they would have pictures taken from satellites of these targets. and in the 70s they could read a newspaper from space.

It's rumored that there is some connection between this derailment and the Oklahoma City Bombing.
@W7DSY6 ай бұрын
Extremely unlikely
@masterkeedo6 ай бұрын
@@W7DSY The rumor has some basis in reality. There is currently ongoing civil litigation involving between Jesse Trentadue and the FBI. One of the exhibits filed in Federal Court is an email exchange between a former FBI agent, Don Jarrett, and former informant, John Matthews, that discusses this connection. Jarret was assigned the derailment case. Personally, I'm on the fence about any connection between the two events.
