To me the cards have a whimsical, British holiday, poster feel that I love. But WOW, how could she have the audacity to just blatantly copy?! It’s as if she drew the deck on a whim for herself, and then later decided to actually publish it quickly, without bothering to change those she actually traced….as if no-one would notice. It’s a strange move, tbh.

I do not like nudity in the cards but somehow I prefer the original 9 of wands. I am surprised people were not OK with this card because there are so many decks with even much more nudity, the thing is that it is mainly female nudity… so I am wondering why male nudity received such a feedback (I guess it was a strong one if the author decided to add a new card).. and in the new version of the card, indeed, there could be some scars visible thru ripped clothes to emphasize the message. I do like better the original coloring of the art, however, the difference is slight.

Wow this is much worse than I was expecting. I’m a commercial artist. You can’t copy the exact forms from something else that’s in your same market. You can take multiple forms of inspiration to make something new. It’s very clear these concepts were stolen. It’s too bad because her art style is so gorgeous. I was interested in this deck until I saw this.

I literally don’t have a problem with any of these… some are definitely “copied” but that’s also basically the history of tarot. Her art work is unique. And many cards have the same arrangement of items (as per the RWS). The the oar positionszzz so many 8 of wands look like this… Pamela Coleman Smith copied a lot of the imagery from an older deck as well.

“Some are definitely copied…” point made. Adding flair to traced linework is unethical and it is indeed stealing. There are numerous cases of this that have proven this to be factual within the American legal system: Shepard Fairey and his Hope poster, Hedy Lamarr vs. Corel Paint for example. “I literally don’t have a problem with any of these.” Cool. Some of us do. This clearly isn’t a discussion for you.

I would have been livid and angry with myself if I had purchased the deck and found this out after the fact. Please consider doing this as a series covering these types of news to help us make informed decisions and ascertain we support the artists who actually work hard and put forth their original creations.

Labels were meant to be identified for communication purposes, not to separated by who's good or who's bad. Religion has been one of the big culprits of control, fear and manipulation by categorizing each person. This is where we are headed again, even more so by government now. We are everybody and everything and not what people think we are. The behavioral credit score is another one that does not phase me. It's just a number that they think makes you better and more worthy than the next by how deep in debt you can get in the matrix system. As far as the word witch, or tarot. I don't limit myself to what I can say or do because it's good, bad, or evil. What's bad or good to one is opposite the other. When AI takes its majority role this next year, your choices will be made for you. You can separate beings, race, faith, weight, height, financial, vaccinated or unvaccinated, age, gender, looks, what you drive, political party and so on...😮

Just for those who don't know, the Dark Grimoire deck is based completely on H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror stories, like Call of Cthulhu. The man on the back of the cards is Lovecraft himself. The monsters on the cards are real creatures from his stories.

Also, i will never purchasw from her again because of how blatant it is. I don't appreciate how she's handled it either. With that all said, becausevi already own it, I'm still going to work with it. If having this information changes the way i work with it then I will donate it. Geesh is it ever so obvious!

As an artist myself, I’m going to say that DD 100% copied the questionable Lo Scorabeo artwork enough to go back and change the cards she changed, and they were copied with intention. Scan both cards in question, overlay one over the other in Photoshop/ Procreate to line up the art in question and you will see that the questionable line work matches EXACTLY. That’s a blatant indication of copying, my friend. There is a strange belief about what’s copying and what isn’t in the art world. Here, many argue that minor details such as color palette, one element slightly set askew, or a slightly different crop, or her art style vs theirs isn’t enough to argue copying but the US Court system has shown that’s simply not the case. The case of Minnie Garcia vs Shepard Fairey in regards to the Obama “Hope” poster and more recently the Supreme Court case of Lynn Goldsmith vs. the Warhol Foundation have brought more attention to how violations of this kind are recognized and how important it is to understand when this involves monetary compensation and licensing violations. The key elements in the above cases, and here in this deck, are that the work must be “transformative” versus “derivative.” Shifting a crop, changing colors, even DD’s own style of drawn elements are arguably not enough to argue that her work isn’t derivative of the Lo Scorabeo deck. For anyone thinking this isn’t considered a copy of the Lo Scorabeo deck, I ask that you go and look at the two cases I listed above and see that if those two cases didn’t fly in terms of copyright, this one most definitely wouldn’t either. As an artist, this is inappropriate. Any artist that’s being intellectually honest knows it’s wrong and why. In terms of business, I promise you that’s why she changed those particular cards. There are the above precedents showing that this is more of a direct copy than those two high profile cases that proved what is considered bad form and legally reprehensible. Thank you so much for the side to side comparison. I heard about this controversy and I’m only now seeing it firsthand. For anyone not knowing, the same can be said for DD’s artwork in a lot of her Queen Alice deck. Her artwork clearly is traced over Sir John Tenniel’s art as well. The illustrations are no longer copyrighted and are in the public domain so legally that’s not an issue. Now morally, that’s a whole other story all together.
@ultravioletpisces3666
@ultravioletpisces3666 7 ай бұрын
Why would it be immoral if the art is no longer in copywrite and obviously her style is very different?
@MummyBrown
@MummyBrown 7 ай бұрын
@@ultravioletpisces3666 because at that point you’re just tracing other artists artwork, it’s not your own artwork. Copyright gives the artist a legal case against you, think of the issue of the Obama ‘Hope’ posters and the legal ramifications that brought for Shepard Fairey. It’s well known by artists that the work you’re selling must be transformative art and not redundant, otherwise you’re taking money from the other artists pocket as that’s how artists make a living. After the legal issue is taken off of the table, it becomes a question about tracing then making money off of that original artist’s hard work. That puts it within the bounds of morality as there is no legal case to be had from after the copyright runs out.

@@MummyBrown well she didn’t JUST trace.
@MummyBrown
@MummyBrown 7 ай бұрын
@@ultravioletpisces3666 that’s actually the argument. If you overlay her artwork over the artwork she’s tracing and actually see how much of this falls directly in line with the artwork she’s tracing, you’d be surprised. If that doesn’t give you pause, that’s a ‘you’ thing. As an artist, this is one of the things you learn in art school is a big no-no. That’s ripping people off.

I hate to tell you, but a bunch of those kind of flapper 20's pirates are inspired by a whole other artist. I am a life-long artist, and I recognize the exact copies of certain lines, but it doesn't erase the Dame's style. She took a bunch of different artists and turned them into a great deck... I have seen worse with no remorse. I love the deck. You can pry it out of my cold dead hands. I also got the earliest iteration with the changed artwork. The switch was painfully obvious. I like the changed cards. But the first edition still wins. It feels like it was drawn on bar napkins in the early hours of the morning after clubbing all night in Atlantic City. I also really really love Queen Alice Tarot!😊

Awesome video! I bought the Golden Girls tarot immediately after it was released. I did find it odd that you called Sophia closed minded. For her age, I found her to be extremely open minded. She didn't discriminate based on race, class or gender. And, she helped Blanche come to terms with her brother's sexuality. I thought she was extremely progressive for someone born in the late 1800s.

Wow that is beautiful. I love the warmer tone more saturated version but I don’t like tuck boxes! 😂. In the new deck do you get both the old and the new nine of wands. It’s interesting there are other violent images reflective of our troubled history but people seem to focus on certain ones. But when the then the cards are changed they turns into something that doesn’t show the shadow side of our existence that the card is intended to reflect. It’s a complicated issue.

Hmmmm this is a tricky one… 1st off, thank you for sharing this comparison, I found it quite interesting and I literally had no idea that this deck had copyright issues up until a few hours ago 😂It’s a well loved deck from within the tarot community. Let’s see, how can I add onto this discussion without sounding condescending 😅😂🤣 Coming from a background of art myself, and considering myself to be quite terrible at drawing but at the same time I love drawing, I have always found it EXCEPTIONALLY difficult to separate “inspiration” vs “copying” mainly because our perspectives as humans are going to be different. So what I mean is that what I may consider to be “inspiration” could very much be “copying” to someone else and vice versa. To me, it was VERY clear that Dame Darcy was “inspired” by the Lo Scorabeo Mermaid Tarot and most definitely “copied poses”…. BUT, the same can be said of the Lo Scarabeo Mermaid tarot!!! They copied many cards off of RWS - the difference here would be that the RWS images are quite possibly out of copyright. The other thing to keep in mind is that Dame Darcy has her own style that is a totally different art style than the art in the Lo Scarabeo Mermaid Tarot. If I was more “into” this particular deck (it’s never really called out to me, as much as I love mermaids none of the tarot decks have depicted mermaids the way I relate to them, same with the Fae), I wouldn’t allow the drama to dictate my appreciation of the deck, or the need to not purchase or keep it because of the drama. We all make mistakes, and artists are constantly inspired by others and blatantly copy a number of things from other artists, especially if we’re insecure in our own work, and at least she attempted to course-correct her deck without much blow back ❤

If you come from an art background and still struggle to differentiate the difference between plagiarism/theft and “inspiration”, your teachers may have failed you or you have come across this issue and believe that it is open to dispute or interpretation. It’s not. If in doubt, I challenge you to duplicate any author’s or known painter’s work and publish it as your own creation. You’ll likely be a cautionary tale or case study in a masterclass about how to ruin your professional reputation with one foolish decision. That aside, stealing artwork or any object intended for magickal work from another artist is far more conscequemtial in terms of ruin because it’s not just the original artist that got ripped off but also the spirits that inspired their work or to whom (again, spirits) the work is dedicated. It is quite possibly the worst thing you can do that even a rookie of any field would know NOT to do. Do you for example walk into a temple or a church and steal the candle offerings and sell it to someone else? Do you steal those candles and then act like the spirits won’t notice and light it up as your own offering? That may work with MFA cohorts of clueless Bambi’s who may think every wheel can be reinvented and they’re the next big shit but I’m afraid that is not going to fly. You’re welcome on a ethical reasoning in art or art history 101 crash course your school never taught you. Pro tip: Pixie’s artwork is no longer protected by copyright yes, however it is a fundamental expectation that any and all tarot professionals have a working knowledge of tarot art (it’s part of the job!) as differentiated by schools of thought/traditions such as RWS, Thoth, Marseilles, etc and most seasoned tarot readers can tell you the name of the artist for decks they work with.
