My introduction to gore was through alarma magazine and similar mags in Mexico. Then through alarma TV. My first real interaction with gore online was when I visited encyclopedia dramatica. I've been fascinated with disturbing, morbid media since I was a little kid, I'm not sure why but I don't think it's a bad thing. Many people who have morbid proclivities become mortuary workers, crime scene cleaners etc. But don't constantly consume such content, we still need a break from how fucked up life can be!

Something I miss about the existence of those sites is that they were kinda like a contained repository for seeing really messed up things. Of course there are exceptions, but it used to feel like you had to search this kind of content and purposely go look for it on certain sites. If you didn't want to see it, you could avoid it (save for that weird friend or parent that forced people to watch). I feel like not having these contained sites has made it so that kind of content is more likely to find people who DON'T want it. Now people are hiding messed up stuff inside of other videos that appear entirely innocuous, instead of knowing what you're gonna see up front. I just hate that people who don't have the same morbid curiosity as us are being forced to look at this stuff on just,, their regular timelines instead of a few contained sites.

Yellows rambling in episode 5 is most definitely about his journey in the last one. Like, verbatim. "There was another me" = the smart version of himself, "I went and saw the other ones" = the big boys, and bigger boys, "and there was a little lumpy one" = the experiment the bigger boys were doing, "and there were things that I heard about that I knew what they were but I don't know now" = the information Lesley gives yellow, "and then it went away" = him forgetting everything at the end. Either what he does in the final epsidoes has happened before and everyone forgot about it, or he had some sorta vision in his dreams.

Try growing up in the Bronx before the internet. I don’t think watching videos of what people go through on the reg is quite the same. I would never let my kids grow up where I’d did, and just seeing things through the safety of a monitor isn’t the same

The dwarf secret society is probably people thinking the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, with either of these: it makes them think of Hermits & they think Hermits small, or they get the name confused with Hobbits, which, again, are smaller than average humans. I'm assuming bc I did the same thing subconsciously. Idk if that came out right, i rewrote it 3 times & it's late & need sleep 🍟

Glad to know I’m not the only one who was influenced positively by those things… as a kid my parents were very overprotective of me because of my autism no one believed in my ability to be independent but that was anywhere but on the internet so the internet was a safe place for me where I can be in control and watch whatever I want So it felt safe in a weird way I also developed a special interest in true crime and paranormal events because of this and honestly I couldn’t be happier (obviously I consume true crime in a much more ethical way now) Also sorry to sound like a nerd but please don’t compare dhmis to this shock value trash, dhmis is an artistic social commentary on how the industry and world in general hates anything that’s unique and wants to destroy it for everyone at the youngest age possible Obviously I didn’t see that nuance as a kid but still- please don’t put it in the same category as that shock value slop sorry if I sound angry here lol I’m really not

That was glorifying and normalizing gore for young children, complete with samples of how allegedly that “helped the adult you be a more reactive person” in reality you ruined yourself at a young age, you were victim to a website that you had no business being in the first place. Accept that it was wrong and it shouldn’t happen to the next generation, rather than trying to give examples of how it “actually helped” you.

Honestly my childhood was destroyed as soon as my parents decided to show me burn victims at like 6. Not to mention being abused for years before that, shit I can't even remember fully. All these websites did was show me what I've already known about the world and allowed me to process it in the only way I knew. Of course I switched over to shows about serial killers and other terrible things happening to regular people, both in horror and thrillers. *But before I knew about fictional awfulness, I knew of real awfulness* Edit before you eventually reply: I don't need your pity and I don't need you thinking everyone who were on those websites are like me.

These gore videos are part of life. I watched them so u can be ready and aware of the dangers of this cruel world. You might find this disgusting and edgy to see like who the fuck watches this in reality hopefully you guys never have to experience anything like those fup videos because some people have to even if they don't want to this is real life sooner or later you might experience something horrific in person like watching someone die or see a loved one hurt. It's better not to live in lala land where everything is rainbows and cupcakes because when reality hits you it's going to hit you hard. Seeing a video is one thing experiencing it in real life is way different no wonder doctors always drink. There is 3 types of people who watch gore videos curious people, sycopaths and the mentally ill. If someone is showing you gore for no reason they are sycopaths.

I agree with this. The reason why I watched it was partially because of the morbid curiosity, but it was mostly because I knew for a fact in my head that society wasn't nearly as good as it was painted at that age. But the worst video I saw on one of those sites wasn't a cartel video, or a beheading from a certain group that shall not be named lest this comment get removed, but it was a fatal work accident. It took place in a factory in one of the Slavic countries. I don't remember which one but it was in that region of Europe. A factory worker wore a loose long sleeve shirt to work while working with an industrial lathe, and to save the gruesome details, what the safety videos warn about in factories regarding clothing happened. The worst part of it wasn't the incident itself, but the fact that there was a large, spotless white piece of fabric behind said lathe that was quickly turned red as the incident occurred. If it weren't for the fact that it was someone's phone pointed at the security camera monitor in the manager's office saying otherwise, you wouldn't be unreasonable in saying it was CGI or a scene in a movie that was faked. That one messed me up for quite a while because while I know I'll never be in contact with any cartel members, it's very possible that I could end up working in a factory with such a machine at any point in my life

I watched a few gore videos when I was younger but didn't really search them out. Still, I absolutely agree with the point being made here. It harkens back to a time when people just posted things to the internet for the sake of it.

The funniest thing was how broken the firewall was at my middle school, so I couldn't access stuff like Neopets, but I was able to sit down and browse Rotten daily. That's what I did everyday in my computer class, and no teacher ever caught me. I didn't dare visit the site at home, because my parents liked checking on what I was doing lol But I checked the homepage literally every day at school. I never knew of the other shock sites outside of Rotten, so I never visited them when they existed. The funniest thing was I could handle and get over MOST of the things on that website, easily but there was one that STILL is frozen in the back of mind of a farm accident with a guy's arm. Of all the things posted to that website, that actually made me stop going to it lol

I've always had a morbid fascination with the reality of death and the many ways it can happen.. In my teenage years, I cut my shock/gore teeth back in the 80's by renting Faces of Death, Traces of Death and other shockumentaries.. Then in the 90's there were the shock sites like Rotten, Fugly, Consumption Junction, Bangedup, and Ogrish (which later became Live Leak).. Nowadays, you can still find shock sites, Kaos, CrazyShit and theYNC that are just as nasty and gory as the old school sites. I'm not as fascinated by it all as I used to be, but every now and then, I get wild hair up my ass to go remind myself of how fragile life is by watching stark depictions of it being snuffed out. It keeps me grounded, reminding me to never think "It'll never happen to me" because it very easily can, and very possibly in an extremely unpleasant way.
