thanks gale... it's really the stone that is still hurting my feet in my 50's. I know I lost a lot of time recognizing my guts feelings by being with a narcissist. but it still hurts, and I feel like I lost so much time and so much opportunities just because of that. but little by little I am conquering myself again. thank you!

Thank you for talking about this. Usually “office romances” have always been explained as a thing that happens due to close proximity, but it’s nice to see it linked to all creative endeavours, birthings, and projects toward a particular result. The energetic explanation makes more sense than other theories I’ve heard. I have had several crushes through my academic life on professors and TAs, and I think it’s because I felt their superiority. I wanted to be better and more worthy, so in an unconscious way I wanted their approval. The crazy thing is that I didn’t actually perform better- I just felt embarrassed and then would hold myself back.

Does the gut feeling show up for every decision?? Sometimes I feel like my gut is "quiet" and doesn't have an opinion either way. Feels a little unmooring.
@Betwixt_App
@Betwixt_App 4 күн бұрын
Oh, that’s _such_ a good question. I’ve honestly never considered it, but I’d say no it doesn’t always show up. I can only understand gut instinct as a message from the unconscious mind (there may be more to it - as in a bigger, higher spiritual element - but if so, I’m not at the stage of grasping this yet). So, assuming it’s the unconscious speaking from the breadth of our personal experience and inherited wisdom, it’s surely safe to assume it won’t always have the answers (or an answer). That said, we can (and do) numb our intuition very effectively, so it would be hard to say in any particular situation whether the gut is quiet because it doesn’t know or if we’re simply unable to hear it.

I have been going through it lately with the man I'm living with. Every time I confront him about his behavior, he turns it around on me, I had so much anxiety stuffing all of that down and taking responsibility for all of our conflicts. But when I realized how he was manipulating me there was a release in my chest and it just felt cooly and calmly right. Moral of my story: I wish I would have questioned this relationship I made when I was young and stuck in the fog of trauma.

the decluttering idea is brilliant! i have always been a person who jumps in with both feet, on instinct. However when faced with a really difficult decision when i was 25, i took 2 weeks away from everyone to analyse. wrote the lists, did the pros and cons. then that inner voice said, don't be daft, you know what you need. and i followed that instinct despite the large social consequences. it led to my dark night of the soul, which i would probably have done my best to avoid in my other life. i am the authentic me now because of that. I have found that living more in the moment, asking 'what do i feel right now?' is one way to remain in touch with who i am. thank you as always for fascination in stories and life.

Omigosh, your sharing about your experience of winning those two titles and feeling totally disconnected from the achievements flashed me back to a time when I won a competition and had a number of other achievements in a relatively short time... and none of it made any sense to me. I wonder if this could happen when you are feeling great and excited from working individually on your own project or goal and making progress. That good feeling might spill over to someone you encounter during that period and cause feelings of misplaced attraction to someone you might otherwise never be interested in.

This story reminds me of the saying, “riding the elephant.” Its meaning: “to have experienced a powerful, often overwhelming emotional state, drawing from the metaphor where the ‘elephant’ represents the emotional side of a person, and ‘riding it’ implies being fully immersed in that strong emotion, usually with little control over it; it's often used to describe a significant or life-changing experience.”

Excellent video as always 👏👏👏. You are such an inspiration. Thank you so much for existing ❤❤❤❤ *this reminded me the meaning of the Tarot card "the Lovers", in which the representation of love is a secondary meaning. The first meaning of the card is about choice and free will. In the Riders White Tarot deck there are two free people (a woman and a man) standing under an angelic being. Interestingly, in the Devil card, there are these two same people, but tied in chains, in front of the devil. And this card represents the loss of free will in all of it's possible forms: insufficient focus in material needs, sex without feeling, addiction, obsession, toxicity, deceit, manipulation, abuse etc....

Yes!! I really enjoy these more lateral ideas of what love means. We can get so bogged (chained) down by the heteronormative expectations of our culture. It’s ironic that we’re taught to expect freedom and wholeness from our attachment to another person when doing that without *first* experiencing some kind of integrative freedom will deliver the exact opposite.

Side note on your opening: While I "used to know" that Psyche in the myth meant "Soul," that slipped my mind as I wrote my ghost story about a psychic! Hearing it again now really helps tie things together in this novel. Thanks. Great essay! It does make me wonder did the audience -- all of Greek society? -- of these myths know to interpret the cast of characters as aspects of one whole person? Or did the storytellers encode the tales this way, knowing it would convey their meaning unconsciously? On your last note about Eros: It's been decades since I read Greek myths, but hearing you describe him as the god of love surprised me. Wasn't his mother Aphrodite the Goddess of Love? I always took Eros, especially with his primary phallic symbol of the arrows, to be the spirit of sexual love, and so we have the word 'erotic.' And 'agape' meant friendly or spiritual love. And the two together being 'true love.' But I'm no expert on all this, just a casual reader long ago.

Oh, I have absolutely nothing against marriage/families or wanting such things. What I take objection to is the way our culture pedals the damaging idea that having these things will make us feel worthy, whole. Complete. Because if we don’t feel that way before getting married (or whatever), we won’t feel that way afterwards either, and the disillusionment that follows the realisation is heartbreaking.

This story is my favorite ever; always has been, and I've never known why. Love your exploration. So many great, great layers. Psyche's original trouble comes because she resembles Venus so much that locals redirect their worship away from Venus and turn to her; their inital similarity becomes that actual problem that starts Psyche on her journey. That has always intrigued me. Also, in Apuleius' version at least, Venus finally lets up on harassing Psyche because other goddesses - I think Athena and Juno - have to go to her and tell her she has to let Cupid grow up and have his own family, and that persuades her. So much to consider! Thanks, as always.

I had a slightly different take - the whole time she was asking for status, wealth, control but really she (the emotions) needed care and nourishment. The fisherman kept going out to get fish, and while the wife’s wishes got granted, he never returned with the food he set out for and that she needed. As the flounder granted her emotional wishes, the rational needs were neglected and the ocean (unconscious mind) got angry and scary due to this emotional neglect. The flounder understands this so instead of continuing to give into emotional demands, finds that the solution is to strip everything back and let the wife/ emotions be. This allows the wife to self-soothe (peel her own potatoes/ provide her own nourishment) and the fisherman comes home to a sense of relief without having to do any reasoning with his wife/ the emotions himself. After all, emotions can’t be reasoned with :) Loved the story! 🤍

Why was the sea black with huge waves when he went for her final request? I have lost so much, people, stuff, my health, my mind, and found so much that I cant explain in those losses - so the message of integration is clear. I really felt the part about the waves though. Do you have an interpretation?
@Betwixt_App
@Betwixt_App 14 күн бұрын
Such a great question. I’ve thought about this a fair bit and have two ideas. The first is that it’s possible this motif may have been added during the story’s evolution to accentuate the literal take that the fish angrily punished the overreaching wife (I don’t know if there’s any evidence for this but I wouldn’t write it off). The second, which I find much more compelling, is that the dark and dangerous water represents both the power of the unconscious mind and the pain/challenge that’s necessarily a part of the integrative process - the death of the old version of self, basically. Jung talked about how suffering was an unavoidable experience during growth and individuation. I like to think that the storm symbolises the suffering required for the fisherman/wife to undergo the ultimate transformation.
