Oof, as a goth teen in the 90s , let me tell you... it was ROUGH. I went to an "inner city" school and the bullying was un fucking believable. There wasnt a single day walking down the hall that i wasnt harrassed and barked at: HEY WHITE GIRL, IS YOU A WITCH?? So, the jocks AND the hip hop kids absolutely tormented me and my small friend group. This is not a race thing, im just stating who my bullies were and offering a different perspective here. After some of the bigger names in hip hop started to "embrace the dark side" 😆, things eased up. When Aaliyah showed up in goth gear, i think people opened their eyes a bit and didnt condemn the aesthetic quite as much. But i have no doubt that the initial reaction was from this stigma that black clothes = witch = evil. Its almost funny now, seeing young rappers wearing Marilyn Manson shirts... i could have used yalls help in '95!! 😆

3:31 idk if you guys know about this but jarhead got into a bit of controversy so basically. There was a band in my local scene in Reno called egotrip they were a straight edge hard-core band. They were caught being extremely racist, homophobic, and sexist, and one of the members spazz SA someone. And jar responded by not really caring about the situation. And I quote. If you’re not with me, you’re against me.On a similar note a lot of the guys in ego trip are still allowed to come to venues and playing bands, which is kind of messed up. Those guys go against everything that’s straight edge and Hardcore stand for, but they’re just allowed to run free and the local scene.All that being said, I still think that’s a pretty good album.
