I have a presumable explanation for this. Independent suspension. In this circumstances it is beneficial. The off-roaders were anchoring themselves to the ground with their axles. In order to rival the Forester in this situation, they should have portal axles. Additionally, the Subie is way lighter than those SUVs.

With a max 80kg roof load on the forester (including the weight of the rack it self) you are well over the limit when you total up the rack, awning and roof top tent. And then you said spare fuel and water? I would be checking any insurance policy before heading out again with that lot sitting up on the little roof of the subie.

Example. 100 hp + 2.5 ton vehicle = 40 hp per ton 90 hp + 1.5 ton vehicle = 60 hp per ton. When you gotta worry about not sinking, it pays to have a light car. A 1.5 litre jimny can make a big 4.2 litre Patrol do a double take. The 2005 Soobie Outback has the same effect in mud and sand

So, are today’s Subaru’s as good as these old legends? I’d really like to know!
@ignitionoffroad5028Ай бұрын
@@henriettavanderfloof8104 for an off-roading sense, they no longer make Subaru’s with dual range gearboxes or a solid auto trans. Modern subie have CVT transmissions that are prone to problems and a lot more technology that have the potential to fail and leave you stranded. Personally I would stick to the older subies for cheap/fun offroad capability
@2visiondigitalАй бұрын
I have been trying to figure it out. I have an Outback and 4runner with some homemade 4wd roads. Obviously, the Toyota has more grunt, clearance and low range. Often times in soggy conditions the Subaru is much more sure footed. It has a way to float over surfaces being much lighter. I think part of the Subaru design just deals with gravity in a successful way. I have never offroaded a Subaru with a cvt though, torque is crucial and i am not sure that's the way i would want to go.

@ignitionoffroad50282 ай бұрын
@@victorbillard4164 the centre diff is still an LSD rather than a locker, but it helps push power both to the front and back wheels, which to me is more important than having a front LSD. Adding a front LSD will have a big effect on vehicle performance as well. Corners are not comfortable when the entire driveline is wound up with LSD’s, and that really makes it more of an off-roader than something you want to commute in every day.
