Fantastic effort Ben👍 I had the same thing happen to me in Lanzarote Ironman, I put it down to not enough fluid on the bike, which ended up with me cramping on the run not a pretty sight 😂 Great video 👍👊

Great review of the courses. I did both in 2019 and preferred Stafford overall but I think that was due to the fact that the weather was so much better for Stafford than Weymouth that year. My opinion: Swim - I prefer a lake swim but the start at Weymouth was simpler than diving off a pontoon - Stafford Wins Bike - Both were great, I loved the descent you mentioned in Stafford but managed to get a solid 50mph downhill in Weymouth so Weymouth wins. Run - Aside from the castle climb, I preferred the variety in Stafford. Weymouth was too repetitive for me. Stafford wins... just. Overall I did not like the split transition of Stafford and this made things difficult for my wife and friends watching. I would do both again, but mainly due to the likelihood of better weather, I think Stafford wins it for me. I have registered for the Outlaw Nottingham (Full) so it's a tad concerning to hear the Notts roads are not good, especially since I now have a lovely new tri bike haha. We'll see. Thanks for your upload, was a good watch!
@triBenjamin2 жыл бұрын
The roads in Nottingham are poor but the stuff that's going to ruin your day (huge potholes etc) are clearly marked and easy to avoid. The surface is just one of those kinds where your constantly bouncing slightly which I assume also means more resistance for your tyres, it's very noticeable at the small points when the surface is actually new/good. You'll be fine though and it's a great event, make sure you get your nutrition and hydration right, it really messes you up if you don't over the longer distance 🤣

@@triBenjamin thanks for the advice. That’s okay then! Yep this will be my first full and I’m not really sure how to approach fuelling it! I managed the 70.3s with a lot of water and a couple of gels, I imagine I’ll have to be more strategic with the full.
@leewalters27942 жыл бұрын
Good luck Ben. Yes, I think sodium is key for you after Outlaw. You are a much faster runner than I am, but in my IM on Sunday my marathon was 43 mins faster than yours at Outlaw. There could be other factors that explain this, of course, but one key one I think is sodium. I was taking four precision hydration sodium capsules per hour on the bike and run and this seems to have paid dividends as I ran right at the upper end of what I thought I was capable of. If you do use these capsules, leave them in the blister packs as they start to disintegrate otherwise.
@triBenjamin2 жыл бұрын
Agree, did a training run the other day and it was miserable😬 , 19° and 90% humidity at 6am and every muscle hurts like mad now and I could barely hit the paces I need. After Outlaw and my cramping issue there I looked into the SIS Electrolyte Gels I was using and it seems they only contain 0.3mg of sodium whereas one of those tabs you put in a glass of water has 1.5mg. Basically I think I am replacing load of sodium with gels but in reality I am not. I'll do a test with my next long run and those sodium capsules as I have a few of them 👍

I'm looking forward to the debrief. Great swim for you (as it would be for me). Bike a bit slower than you anticipated, because of the wind. It looks like the run didn't go to plan - which can happen, of course. Have you diagnosed whether the issue was sodium/hydration/nutrition/something else?

"I watched 2 people go flying into a bush" :) that's got to be the turn at 8kms? Where you go left around a blind corner and are surprised by a steep uphill. I'd been warned by local friends the day before so was ready (but even then I nearly blew it). I had to navigate around someone desperately trying to unclip after evdently finding himself at the bottom of a hill in the wrong gear and about to take a sideways fall. It's a bugger.
@gazringgbgjgggg66972 жыл бұрын
What would you recommend best option for average Joe on the bike course, a triathlon tt bike or a road bike? As course quite hilly?
@triBenjamin2 жыл бұрын
Probably still best to go with a TT, there are some fastish sections and ultimately you'll get some free speed for the same effort by being more aero over the course, I cant imagine you'd lose any significant time over the hills due to having a heavier TT bike or anything like that. Mines an aero road bike with clip on bars so sort of in between

Good luck on the day; I’ve got Staffs 70.3 this year - first ever triathlon - and am in deep prep right now. The run is my weak point albeit I’ve been trying hard to get better. Been following your channel and it has been good to follow a fellow amateur who is fitting life in around training!
@leewalters27942 жыл бұрын
Good luck. I'd recommend putting bottle behind your saddle - much more aero than on your frame - and refilling your between the arms bottle with them. You could then leave your aero bottle on the frame and put your gels in with a little water.
@triBenjamin2 жыл бұрын
Will do that for the full ironman i think, I've tried it in a few 70.3's and the bottles have never stayed in 🤣 (Stafford 70.3 is notorious for lost bottles in the first mile) so now i typically stick my tools behind the saddle. But yeah for a full i will need to maximise space so will try whacking one back there and praying to the pot holes gods that it doesn't go flying
