So according to your math you could use a 2.5k Pot to give you a variable from 0 - 60 dB.

Sorry 40dBm with 2.5k Potentiometer in place of 2460 Ohm Resistor 25k would go to 60dBm.
@AG6AG
@AG6AG Күн бұрын
That’s correct! Also, your are looking at 8K of resistance to drop your power down 50DBm and, the attenuation calculation needs to take the test equipment into the mix. Simply speaking, you would take the 50ohm resistor in the tap and the 50ohm impendence from the SA which gives you 25ohms. So: R1 = 8Kohms R2 = 25ohms Drop in dBm = 20 x log(R1 / R2) Now, what about watt rating... V = √(Watts x 50Ω) Watts Required = V² / R1 And with a pot you have the issue of it changing if you bump it... Not to mention you just created a transmitter with the pot... Stu

Hi German John, Although testing at higher frequencies will fluctuate as much as 10 - 15 dBm, they do stay steady at the attenuation tested via a tracking generator. We have successfully used this attenuator at frequencies as high as 900 MHz. If you are talking about frequencies over 1 GHz then all bets are off. Of course your mileage may very, and you should never hook your SA or Scope up to a transmitter without testing attenuation at the frequency of interest. Stu AG6AG

Watch the entire chapter to find the R1 values for different attenuation as well. For the 50 dBm attenuator is 8K ohms. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iajYZop9oaiLhZosi=YezkuinxVsqhtR8B&t=556 Hope that helps! I'm not great at math, but followed your formulas as closely as possible. Hopefully I used my calculator properly. Anyway, can you do a double check on my figures. My antenna is a yagi, triband Cushcraft A3S with 8dbi gain up 11 meters. (roof peak = 15.5' plus up 21' on a mast for 36.5 feet. I run 500 watts (sometimes) ssb or CW. RG213 coax 55' long. I came up with a min distance power density of 0.1062 @ 100w pep; 0.5311@500w pep; and for the future 1500w pep, 1.593 . . . I didn't figure all the other stuff you did for cable loss etc because I don't know how. N7BUD

I love it-welcome to what I teach in all of my Technician level classes! (and disturbingly, often have to teach in Amateur Extra classes also). Oh, another handy addition is 1dB, or a ~20.6% increase. Close enough to call it 20%. So if 40dBm=10W, 41dBm=48W. I wish the League's license manuals would spend more time on this method and less on the pure mathematics. de W6KME

Color me confused but you said the crimp connector was spinning on the coax, then hacked off a standard solder Amphenol (new ones suck btw) to replace it with another crimp? If that wasn't the bad connector you cut off why cut it so close, you could've made a short jumper with it... But I digress.

Stu, a setting in my Yaesu 991A changed, and I can no longer use Winlink P2P packet 1200. I suspect it may be the COM port selection in the settings for Soundmodem as to the modem. Under PTT, did you select the standard Silicon Labs COM port or the enhanced Silicon Labs COM port for use with the 991A? Thanks.

Hey Stu! Thank you! I have a question. My Vara Hf winlink works great, but when I use HF P2P the tones that are generated upon attempting to connect are barely audible and I have difficulty connecting. Tones when using an RMS are perfectly loud and clear. Any insight as to why the P2P tones would be so weak compared to RMS?
@AG6AG
@AG6AG 3 ай бұрын
Hi Carolee, Since the audio levels are correct for RMS contact and do not change when sending via P2P, My assumption is the station you are sending to does not have their Vara levels properly set on their side. The only thing I'd verify is that your radio is setup the exact same way as it is for connecting to RMS. Make sure that the mode is set to Data if you normally have it set to Data for your RMS connection. Hope that helps, Stu AG6AG
