There are people who won't even entertain the non-binary topic. As for me, I'm totally fine with it. I'm not a member of the non-binary community - I'm a heterosexual male. But I think there are people who genuinely don't conform to gender norms and, honestly, referring to some of the members in that community as "they/them" is no skin off my back. It means nothing to me, but could mean so much to them. Having that representation should be awesome for them, but Taash is not that. Taash is, quite simply, poorly written, with them being a "message" rather than a character. Character's can have a message, but a message can't be a character. It simply doesn't stand to scrutiny in long-form storytelling, which Veilguard falls under as a large RPG. Taash being horrible initially would be fine IF there was a pay-off. But there isn't. They're just...horrible. That, alongside the dialogue around and with Taash seemingly stuck on such restrictive rails makes it much worse, as it robs us of our agency and hands it to a character that is so unlikable. I don't believe in using the word WOKE unironically. It's lost it's original meaning and is far too dilluted at this point. But I am, by most defnitions, woke and, politically, left-leaning. That does not mean I'll simply accept poorly written content because I agree with the overall messaging - the details matter.

I'm someone who tries pretty hard to be respectful about and learn about trans people and trans experiences. I think it's rude to misgender people knowingly. The complaints about being legally forced to use the correct pronouns are blown wildly out of proportion in order to sustain profitable culture war grifting, but there's a kernel of truth in some of it. I do think that intentionally misgendering someone repeatedly, knowingly, to piss them off, can constitute harassment. I think that there's way more established knowledge on trans experiences than you have learned, and probably even that I have learned. And I still want to yeet Taash into the fucking sun for being the biggest fucking immersion thieving prick of a rebellious 14 year old I have ever encountered. It wasn't enough to completely obliterate my feelings about the Lords of Fortune by having some schpiel about how they're actually totally ethical pirates basically reuniting cultures with British Museum stolen artefacts, so I don't have to feel any moral qualms about allying with pirates... But then they had to go and be a complete brat to every single person they interact with. Lashing out is honestly a common trope among people who are trans but haven't figured things out yet and therefore harbor a ton of frustration all the time, but I was expecting it to be a wholesome character arc where they figure themselves out after being called out for being a fucking asshole, then make amends with people in their life and then receive a mix of support and backlash based on the personalities of various characters or villains. Instead, literally no one in the game has any agency to be anything but insanely patient and kind to them, even over a fucking breadstick. It's some kind of bizarre narcissist self insert character, or intentionally written to stoke culture war hatred or something, because not one single trans person I know among dozens ever want to be treated like they're above everyone else or have their gender be the primary focus of any situation or plot. So much of the dialogue felt like it came out of an HR meeting or 2024 therapy/counseling session, or morning affirmations of a 20 year old Instagram influencer. What the fuck were they smoking? 20 years of describing Antivan Crows down the drain. Hell, even Harding's established personality from DAI was sacrificed on the pyre of Marvel character quirky relatability. Even trans people and leftists are left aghast at the writing choices in this "RPG". I just wish that this tragedy didn't spur people into thinking that Jordan Peterson is valid. Derangement from one side does not validate the claims of the other. There's so much room for nuance and truth in between these 2 camps.

Games have always been political, art is political. It is an expression of thought and emotion which is formed by the conditions in which someone lives in. Games aren't being ruined by wokeness, it's being ruined by mass commercialization of something that isn't supposed to be made for money. From inexperienced leads taking on larger roles, to a perpetual revolving door of contractors, investors and executives take every shortcut they can. These aren't conditions to get good work from developers, it's just another job, you do what you're told, nothing more and nothing less. Even if you did manage to thrive under such conditions, you can still get shut down with a moment's notice and take all the blame no matter the circumstances, even if you make critically acclaimed games. Veilguard for example is a result of a dev studio that was ALWAYS hostile to its writers, even as they made massively popular games. Of course they're not going to have writers who can do what they need to do when there's no veterans left to fight for good writing and storytelling. What we're seeing today is a generation of developers who don't have the willpower to fight for their creativity because they don't have the same experience that the previous generation did. This is the commercialized world they grew up in, not like those who grew up alongside the creation of video games. Developers can be replaced in an instant now, so when it comes to making good art or putting food on the table, you're going to keep your head down and take that check until you can make your own project. It’s weird because they kept the original voice actress for the Polish version. I forgot which book about fascism that states that you should portray your enemy as both strong and weak, so your followers feel like they are beatable, but also this overwhelming force that can't be ignored, and this is how anti-woke people are portrayed, specially by people who pretend to be impartial (good ol' woke doesn't mean anything anymore line). Woke games are usually made by formerly successful studios or publishers that have been peer pressured or market pressured into having diversity programs or hires, in order to receive more funding/grants from governments and loan groups. (See dustborn) Problem is, the creative types usually run afoul of those puritan types, leading to their eventual exit due to them feeling constrained, or that one time they yelled at the new hire for not being able to do the job they were hired to do. Case of too many chefs in the kitchen. Naughty Dog is the case of all the talent being drained away (Amy Henning) while the lead director is running amok (See TLOU Joel death or their new game where your MC is the sole Survivor after building up your ship and creating relationships with the crew, only for Truckmann to kill them off and blowing up your ship. As a developer who has been in the industry for 20 years, I can say he is so full of shit. Just for perspective The Witcher 3 came out in 2015, meaning you could make characters like that game during development of that game which sits nicely in his timeline. That was never a thing.
