I've always been a fan of Lotus. I wanted an Elise but the wife said that she wouldn't be able to gratefully get in or out of it. 😂 However, she has agreed, with me, in getting an Emira 😊 I've got a Vivid red one coming in December 🎉

Modern doughnut are poor compared to the originals, I've had 3 sets fail, all from different suppliers, and all in less than 2000 miles each time. I have therefore fitted cv conversions. So much better and peace of mind regarding potential failure at speed. Good jackiing mod though.

I had an S3 S/E for 18 years. The doughnuts were one of the worst features. I believe they were originally used on the Hillman Imp. Later ones were stiffened up but they still affected the gearchange and the ride. I fitted a conversion with universal joints and a sliding splined intermediate joint. (CV conversions were not available at the time). The conversion worked well but some alternatives were not as good. Original rear calipers were from Fiat. Handbrake pads wore quiclly as they tended to rub all the time.

Great video - Thanks for that presentation. I have not seen one as good about the Lotus Elan chassis I wonder if it would not be wise to apply a type of silicon type sealant to that noise dampening fabric so the chassis does not get wet and cause rusting.
@PaulH_S2_Elan
@PaulH_S2_Elan Ай бұрын
I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for your comments. Regarding the noise damping, I have seen others use a closed cell foam instead of the original material. However, when I took the body off the original rotten chassis, that area was in the best condition. It seemed that it was well protected from the wet.

@PaulH_S2_Elan
@PaulH_S2_Elan 2 ай бұрын

@@PaulH_S2_Elan It’s looking good for an original chassis. Did you have a hoist for the body removal or was it a handful of mates and some elbow grease ?
@PaulH_S2_Elan
@PaulH_S2_Elan 2 ай бұрын
The chassis is a genuine Lotus replacement chassis purchased from a Lotus dealership many years ago. It one of the last from Lotus and is galvanised. You can still buy the original Lotus chassis, now supplied by Classic Team Lotus :) but I believe they don't have them galvanised anymore. With all the components removed from the body it's an easy lift for 4 people, and that 's what we did with mine when it was lifted off and put back on.

Hi Paul. I have watched your video previously on re-upholstering but now having received my new seat cover kit I’ve watched a second time. I’m sure this will help me so thanks in advance. Regarding the use of the original foam - do you think the covers would fit better if you had used the new seat foam from Newton? I do believe reading that the old foams won’t work with the new seat covers (although you’ve proven this mostly wrong) ?
@PaulH_S2_Elan
@PaulH_S2_Elan 3 ай бұрын
Hi. I remember the seat cover kits came with instructions, which were good, but I guess experience will really count in terms of getting the best result. I would take your time and see how it goes with the foam that comes with the kit. I did end up buying some additional seating foam from Woolies-trim. Because I had those original shaped pieces that were is good condition I found it too tempting to use them. So maybe I'd had got a better result if I'd had to only use the new foam. I think you'll be able to tell when you pull the vinyl cover over the side foam how it's going to look. You may be able to use some clamps to hold the cover onto the frame before using the final fixings, so that you can try a few different methods of positioning the foam. Good luck, I hope it goes well.

0:40. The bar is split to make it easier to fold when in storage but eventually, the split tends to damage the hood creating wear where the metal bars meet. My new hood came that way. That's why I replaced the split bar with a single continuous bar. Can't fold it, but I can still lay it flat in the boot. Just something you might want to consider before the damage begins. 1:13. I believe the zippers are there mainly if you have an S3, S4, or a Sprint as the window frames are fixed. You certainly did a nice job fitting both the tonneau and the hood.

Really good video only one slight contention. It’s not a chassis it’s a sub frame. You can drive a chassis you cannot drive this. I won this argument with HMRC over an imported S2. DVLA consider it a sub frame because the vehicle details are attached to the body. But great vid.

The problem is people expect old cars to idle from cold like new ones, That's what chokes are for, in the 70s to get a fast enough idle on a cold engine you had to have the chock out just enough to be in contact with the fast idle ramp on the carb linkage, this didn't close the chock butterfly enough to richen the mixture but kept the engine running. Then after 4 miles you could push it in.
@PaulH_S2_Elan
@PaulH_S2_Elan 10 ай бұрын
Yes, no electronics and automatic choke to help here. My experience of the Elan with Weber carbs is to start from cold, push the accelerator fully down and release, then hold the accelerator halfway down and turn the key. Starts every time. Pushing the accelerator fully down causes fuel to squirt into inlets, enough to start the car. You don't need the choke to start. If you are in the car, you can keep it running with the accelerator.

I was interested to see Elan S2 pop up on my IPA as MGY38D was assembled from a kit by myself in 1966! It looks as though it’s had a hard time in the mean time ,I sold it 1968 & built a S4SE at that time which proved to be a better car although it still had similar problems ie water pumps/rear wheel bearings rotor flex couplings but at least the rain did not keep coming through the doors & soaking the carpet (incurable!

My experience suggests that the problem usually lies with the rubber seal in the slave cylinder; if you look at it, it is situated next to the exhaust pipe, and suffers a lot of thermal stress. That is the first bit I would replace. Cheap enough too!

The early units as fitted to my 1967 model had pistons with leather seals. Once the seals dried out the lights would slowly drop whenever you accelerated. They were eventually replaced by the diaphragm types.

If you are doing many miles you soon get fed up with working on the distributor. I fitted an electronic conversion but was unlucky as it came from a bad batch which failed quickly. The only time the RAC had to tow me home. The replacement worked fine, but i also had to fit silicone plug leads as there were sparks all over the place in the dark. Not nice on a glass fibre car.

I have not seen a mention of the dynamo. Original fitting was a 25 amp dynamo. I managed to get the genuine forged bracket to mount an alternator, which was normally 36 amps, but i was offered a rebuilt 48 amp which also fitted. It was a bit difficult to find the right fan belt to fit. With an alternator you could fit an electric cooling fan. I seem to remember that the polarity had to be changed when the alternator was fitted.
@PaulH_S2_Elan
@PaulH_S2_Elan Жыл бұрын
Hi, it does have a dynamo. You can still fit a cooling fan when it has a dynamo 🙂
@michaeltb1358

@@PaulH_S2_Elan Mine was a fixed head. With the alternator I was able to fit more powerful headlights and rear screen demister, plus rear fogs. Problem with a dynamo is that it only gives its full output at higher engine speeds. In traffic it is not much use, and I was using my Elan for everyday transport. According to the DVLA it is still on the road, 34 years after I sold it. I noticed your comments in another video about the doughnuts. I replaced mine with a UJ and spined drive system which really improved the gearchange and the ride. I did keep the original parts so a purist could easily change them back.
@michaeltb1358

Changed the windscreen on my S3 FHC more than once. Did manage without the tool first time, but eventually got the tool to do the job properly. At least the rubber mouldings were easy to find. I believe I replaced the brake and clutch cylinders completely as they were not expensive. I did replace the pistons in the calipers with Stainless ones as the originals corroded quickly.

Water pump was a messy job but not impossible. Internals were standard Ford design and had to be pressed into place in the cover. Like most parts they were readily available and cheap. The fan belt also drove the dynamo or alternator.

Now that is a nice real Elan chassis. Only later ones were fully galvanised. My 1967 original did not rust so badly anyway. I gave up the doughnuts for a UJ conversion which improved gearchange and ride. I believe later conversions used CV joints. Description of the vacuum is wrong it just uses the vacuum produced between the carbs and inlet valves. Many early Fords used this suction to drive the wipers, which caused problems as the vacuum dropped when the throttle was opened. When the headlight operating cylinders leak on the Elan the lamps drop when you accelerate. This was a problem on early models as the cylinders used a piston with a leather seal. Later there was a diaphragm.
@Rob-fx2dw
@Rob-fx2dw Ай бұрын
I can recall seeing those vacuum operated wipers in operattion on 1950's vehicles. It was rather amusing with them accelerating greatly then almost stopping right when you didn't want such variation in their speed. One instance was during a drive in movie when a lot of cars started their engines to get the wipers operating as rain squall came across during the penultimate partt to the end of the movie as the critical last few scenes were becoming obliterated by heavy rain.
