Just went through this at my church. Had to call it quits because it was too much micromanaging from people that cannot communicate effectively. No clear objectives. No real plan, changing things last minute.

I am a drummer I use Allen and Heath ME 1. I have noticed that most of my Cymbal bleed are picked up from the other drum mics. I love the volume level of my Kick, Snare and Toms. It cuts through the mix really nice. To reduce the cymbal bleed i end up turning down the individual channels. Unfortunately, when i do this my drums gets lost in the mix. I find this very frustrating.

Hey! James! we are using the 32 console with a stage box over ethernet.. when I click usb it disables network.. is There a work around for this?
@AttawayAudio9 күн бұрын
You'll have to return the USB channels on a different input. I actually don't mind that, since you can have a "safety" channel thats available for monitor mixes and computer "interruptions"

Good Presentation The SE v7 or Shure SM Beta or even the slightly more expensive Nexadyne are all fantastic pro quality microphones, you’re advice to go for thousand dollar mic being worth every penny, is a shocker there are many sub one hundred dollar mics that are outstanding such as the one I have mentioned I would say maybe we would feel better in our souls to spend less and use the nine hundred dollars change for helping out the less fortunate or just buying nine more mics for some kids who don’t have that kind of money but a whole lot of undiscovered talents just food for hungry thought

I use my iPhone and a $4 app called DecibelX Pro to monitor the A-weighted sound level at my FOH position at the church. I’ve found that if I keep worship band between 82-92 dBA (depends on their dynamics), it sounds full and we won’t get (too many) complaints. Pastor’s voice should be between 62-72 dBA. We’re non-denominational btw. I want to mention that the DecibelX Pro app on the iPhone is remarkably accurate. I’ve compared it side by side with a $4k Type 1 sound level meter sitting 3 feet away from a loudspeaker playing pink noise. The app was only off by about 1 dB from the Type 1 meter across the range of 40-115 dB. Astoundingly accurate really.

A worship team should be a team not a dictatorship. More often the worship leaders have very little technical understanding and it's ok when they treat the team like a team not like a throwaway tool for purely their vision.

Nice mixer. Could you share the brand information? Could you recommend a full gear for my church?

I previously hated adding distortion on bass until I figured out how to do it right. The best way I found is to use parallel processing. Setup your primary channel for just a good solid sound. On your secondary channel, high pass around 200 and low pass around 2k. Then compress the snot out of it. Once you do this, find a distortion processor that will give you a nice round warm distortion with a lot of harmonics. You want to make sure there is no bite or raspy harshness to the sound, just a lot of mid-range harmonics. Then GENTLY mix this in with the primary channel. This allows you to pick up detail and tonal definition without getting a nasty sound. It stands up in the mix. Subtle grace notes or runs are not lost, both due to the distortion and the heavy compression. I like a bass that represents the same feel as a pipe organ. Long sustained bass notes do not have to be loud or obnoxious to make the image sound huge. Many make the mistake of using the drums - primarily the kick to give the big image, however this gets bothersome, and will get you complaints that it is too loud. Use the bass for imaging. Drums are just for punch. The 70s engineers knew this, but didn't have the massive subs to fill out the very low end with bass guitar.

I recently got custom in-ears, but I'm still adjusting to them. As a soft singer, my studio recordings reflect that, but live performances are a struggle. I have trouble with getting the gain right for the engineer and matching my in-ear mix to how I hear myself in the studio, which affects my pitch and performance. Any advice on how to fix this?

Whew, man, I'm going to have to watch this several times to get close to absorbing everything. Then I might be ready for a live lesson. I'm a retired plumber thrown into the "sound leader" position at our very small church. Our SQ7 is like driving an F-1 car with a learners permit. We get through the service without any obvious problems but I know there is so much more I could do. Thanks for helping. And Merry Christmas!

Great timing for me on this one. I've just moved from many yrs on consumer level speakers to Meyer Sound. From using the Meyers I've embarrassingly discovered I've been gain staging my M32 incorrectly for years. This had me go down the rabbit hole on all of what you are talking about, along with fader resolution. Either no one talks about this, or I'm just finding this info now. Its such a massive amount of very important information. I'm an obsessive hobbiest with live sound, I'm not a pro or touring tech. I'm assuming at that level you learn about all this stuff, but I had no idea about all of this, and I consider myself pretty knowledgeable in this area. Grateful to finally learn more about this. Great nerdy stuff indeed!

Aloha from Hawaii! I was wondering… I currently mix on a X32 and add compression to the vocal channel, then send the vocals to a mix bus and add a bus compression Pre-EQ. I then EQ the bus to cut 150Hz and around 2kHz. I then have an LA-2A compressor inserted on the bus post insert. The issue I’m running into is that the vocals sound a little thin. They sound okay as a recording, but in a live setting, they seem a little thinned out. I feel that I might be over processing the vocal bus, but not sure if the issue is the EQ or the over compressing of the mix bus compressor Pre-EQ, with the added compression of the LA-2A post. Any suggestions?
