Dang, you pretty much left this book in the state the killer left the victims. Oh well. It sounds like much of the town and this book both "needed killin'" anyway. 😂 Sure, I DNF on occassion (overall, it's pretty rare), but I don't have hard and fast rules about it. Sometimes I get a ways in and it gradually dawns that I'm not interested or that the book just isn't clicking for me. Other times, I'll get only a few pages in and there's something about the style that irritates me so badly that there's no way I can tolerate even a full chapter. Wish I had a more clearly defined answer. Have a good one!
@TedReadInstead3 күн бұрын
Haha! Yes, I guess I did leave destruction in my wake. ;) Those are all good reasons to DNF a book. There's no reason one has to overthink it! :)

Awesome, video @TedReadInstead and @Already-Overbooked! Congrats on the first buddy read. This was my first time reading it and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I think I like the idea more than the execution. The first thing I noticed was that the characters were pretty unlikeable in the book, and, having rewatched the movie last month, I think Spielberg made a good call by changing their personalities. And you're totally right that the baby scene towards the beginning was terrifying. I can't imagine walking in and seeing a compsognathus eating a baby alive. That one is going to linger with me and it's no wonder it didn't make the cut in the movie adaption. On a different note, not sure if you guys are gamers, but you should try Jurassic World Evolution 2. Building a a dinosaur habitat is hard! Those suckers are always escaping and eating my tourists! - Todd
@TedReadInstead4 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Todd. Yeah, I'm discovering that Spielberg has an eye for character development. Each movie I've seen of his has the characters likable and relatable.

@BryanM.R.-prionic14 күн бұрын
Great discussion! I'd have spent way too much time wringing hands over the science Crichton got wrong. And I'm not talking about the obviously speculative stuff regarding the cloning of extinct organisms. I'm talking about some basic uncontestable biochemical facts. 😜 Yeah, it's been many, many years, but I remember THAT baby scene very clearly. And I always thought it was a shame that the waterfall and pterodactyl river sequence didn't make it into the movie, but I've been told that some of that stuff shows up in the sequels (haven't seen them). Finally, I always thought it was lame that Crichton decided to resurrect a certain character for The Lost World. I know he claims that this, along with the title, is supposed to be an Arthur Conan Doyle homage, but I suspect he probably did it because the movie left that character alive. But then again, he didn't do the same with another character that the movie spared, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. 🤪 So people complained about the kids screaming too much in the movie? The Richard Attenborough scream is the one that always cracked me up. 😁 And it's not unusual for Crichton to include some know-it-all mouthpiece character to deliver lectures about whatever's currently on his mind. It's just that Jeff Goldblum was able to make the film version of that particular one somewhat likeable. Oh, and I'll just note that since I grew up around herds of livestock, those "piles" from the movie never seemed all that extraordinary to me. 😂 Once again, very enjoyable discussion. Have a great week!
@TedReadInstead4 күн бұрын
Thank you, Bryan! :) I especially appreciate your giving some more context to all that went on. You know your stuff! Yes, Jeff Goldblum tends to make these type of characters a bit more palatable. That's probably why some directors want him in their movies!

I've heard the smart aleck definition of magic realism given as "Latin American fantasy," but apparently, it's not really that simple. I'm under the impression that "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is supposed to be the big quintessential exemplar of the genre, but I haven't read that one yet. 😊 However, I am a fan of Jorge Luis Borges, and he's apparently considered a sort of "founder" of magic realism. But anyway, the book sounds interesting, and you always manage to put together a nicely structured and fun video. And yeah, pleasnt surprises are often the best. Have a good one!

While I enjoy romance to some extent, I found myself more interested in Opaline's storyline as well. For a recommendation I suggest "Grimm Curiosities" by Sharon Lynn Fisher. It has a slightly heavier dose of magic but still firmly rooted in the real world, it also has a romance plotline so just a heads up if that's not your thing. I found the story beyond the romance to be very fascinating (also in a bookshop setting) with a few twists and turns I didn't foresee.

I think what sounds most appealing is a fantasy novel that's less than 300 pages. There are so many modern fantasy novels that could have easily been trimmed down. Also, I don't know if I have a favorite fairy tale, but I do like Grimm's Little Red Riding Hood. I remember it being much darker than I expected so it was a fun surprise. - Todd
