Thanks, great info. But, neither of the Conquest BFS reels (‘17 or ‘23) are listed on the Shimano web site as being a “localized” product for sale in North American markets. Which means, no customer support, no Shimano service centers here in the US or Canada will work on them, and both the user manual and parts list are in Japanese only. I tried tracking down a PDF of the supporting paper work in English, and as far as I can tell, it doesn’t exist -can’t even read part numbers on the included schematic. This was confirmed by one of the service centers. You can only learn so much from the pictures in the manual. I’d want to take the reel apart and make sure it is greased properly, but doesn’t look that easy. Do you know of a video that shows this reel being taken apart or showing its functions, places where to put oil or grease, etc? Kind of surprising, since this is available for a few of the other Conquest reel models (MD and 100-200A). I have several other Calcutta models and love them, never had any problems, so maybe I won’t have any issues with this one -any thoughts on this?

The internals as far a just greasing the gears will be about the same as your other Conquest reels. BFS reels really on have a different spool and braking system. The internals are the same as a "normal" bait casting reel. The Conquest has a drag clicker so, the washer inside the main gear will have a little spring-loaded piece that rubs on the inside of the main gear to make the drag peeling noise. Just make sure that you locate it and carefully remove the washer. If you are just greasing the gears, you won't have to do this.

@ Thanks. My other Calcutta reels are older and much less complicated with fewer parts (101B and 251). On my ‘17 BFS reel, it looks like removing the plate on crank side would allow me to add grease to main drive gear - there are two screws and looks like a third one you have to access from the other side (near the spool edge). It’s always scary for me to open a reel up if I don’t have guidance how to reassemble it. I can’t even find a video that shows opening and closing the other side plate where you access the spool, but I figured that much out on my own, you just can’t get to the main drive gear that way. Thanks for the enjoyable videos.

Great tips , I’m new to BFS, I’m looking for a set up to throw weightless flukes and worms for smallmouth and hope to catch a big one , and I want to leave the spinning gear at home , what would you suggest ?

Just discovered your channel and Instagram recently. Wow! Glad I did. I’m an ultralight spinning guy but am into a lot of the same gear as you. My interest in ultralight BFS for creek fishing is growing. Your reviews and demonstrations are so well done. I have been trying out several of the 1-3lb lines from Varivas and I LOVE them. Perfect for catching panfish and trout.

I got the kasking zephyr rod and they are probably sit at the mid tier or bottom tier. One of them broke on a small bass and the other seem like way too fast action for casting. Absolutely no strength lol getting a sunfish felt like a 3lb

You should check out the Spearhead Ryuki Quattro in the Brown Trout color, would be an amazing little bait to add together with the ones you're currently fishing. It's a quad jointed swimming bait weighing slightly more than a Spearhead Ryuki 50S but it's action is superb. I also really like the 38S, it's only 12mm shorter but waaay smaller than the 50S.

I'd fish that so differently, I'd be throwing across and pointing my rod upwards then getting as much sideways action as I could. I also have much better experiences with constantly retrieves and constant action, making the lure have a lot of action while also being predictable is a great way of getting bites.

@HobieWanKenobi
@HobieWanKenobi 2 ай бұрын
The Conquest lineup has the BFS up to the 300 and 400 size you talk about. the spool depth is the biggest difference. The larger number reels also get a little bigger in the frame as well. The Conquest line is Shimano's top tier round reel

What's your position on mono warping spools?
@HobieWanKenobi

It can happen. I haven't had it happen to me. I use only a tiny amount of pressure when spooling and never over 50m of line. Don't horse fish or rip on snags and you will be fine.

What would be a rod that you would recommend for the Great Lakes trout and salmon? Would love to chase after some in the river systems. But of course they’re much bigger than your typical mountain stream trouts.
