You need some glass fermentation weights to keep the mushrooms submerged. The first bottle of alcohol should have been plenty.

Im not sure we have changed so many times over the years - right now we work with a third party media company but we have used free qr code websites in the past with good results. Also Fivr is good for freelancing this type of work.

What is the cloudy crap I get in my agar start at the perimeter?
@FreshfromtheFarmFungiКүн бұрын
it could be many things. Try using lab grade agar that is filtered for particulate matter

How selective are the TSA Blood Agar plates for bacteria? All of my oyster LCs I tested showed growth of something, but I can't tell if I'm looking at mycelium or bacteria. It's not fuzzy like mycelium, but it also doesn't look like any bacteria I can find online because it has all these lines moving out from the colonies similar to mycelium. I'd love to get your opinion. I took pictures too. 🤓
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi5 күн бұрын
cool! It is not very selective for bacteria as it will grow a host of organisms, from what you are describing it could be some kind of motile bacteria that makes those typical elongated spreading colonies - it would take confirmatory testing to narrow it down but normally you should be able to tell mycelium right away (look up what proteus species on blood agar grows like it could be similar) hope this helps!

Hi Gary. Does the syringe filter allow enough gas exchange?

yes especially for liquid culture

@FreshfromtheFarmFungi is there any chance of contamination if I turn the jars upside down?
@theomarimira15 күн бұрын
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi Also, can I put two syringe filters and draw from one instead of using an injection port? I think what I mean to ask is what else does a syringe filter do besides allowing gas exchange?

Hi Gary. Does the syringe filter allow sufficient gas exchange?

yes for a liquid culture definitely, for a larger grain jar it might be a little slower but it does work

Hi. Which port would you use for sucking, and which one for injecting? Is the gray one for injecting, and red one for sucking a LC syringe out of the jar?
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi7 күн бұрын
the same port (the gray one) is used for both injecting and taking samples out - the red one is a filter disk so as you displace the air by adding or subtracting liquid it keeps the system sterile

I mix my agar in a 1L media flask with a stir bar in it, and use a funnel to pour into my conical tubes. Then I put those in their rack and I put the whole thing in the All American and PC the rack and all the tubes with the agar mixture in them. Then while cooling I orient the tubes which way I want them then tilt the whole rack.
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi7 күн бұрын
this works well too! I find that the slants can get a little more condensation that way but there is less risk of exposing to outside contaminants so it’s a tradeoff

Your channel is really good Gary! Thanks for all of your knowledge and passion to teach about mushroom farm. If you can answer me this question: It seens that the oxygen only enters the room throw your humidifier system (in an active way) when this system is activated by humidostat. Beyond that, we could say that every time you are pushing out the CO2 using your in line fan, the oxygen must get in by somewhere, right? I feel that this “passive way” happens throw the duct that is connected to your humidifier system, right? Thanks!!!
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi8 күн бұрын
our tents are quite “leaky” so every time the air is exhausted there is fresh oxygenated air coming in as well and in this setup I had a steady flow being expelled constantly on top of the humidity that kicked on when it dropped - so in essence; there is constantly a slow stream of O2 entering the system but a boost when the humidity kicks on - there is a negative pressure from the air being exhausted constantly and I prefer this so the spores are always leaving 🙂

@@FreshfromtheFarmFungi Sorry for being late! But thanks a lot Gary for answering my question and for your attention! I really did the same over here to get rid of CO2 and spores. I am having some issues about my humidostat readings.. Where do you put your sensor inside the fruiting room? I am trying to figure out what should be the "best place" to be the most effective. I still have a micro fan running 24hours to equilibrate the air conditions for the entire room. My big problem is that even if my humidification system stays on for 10 minutes, I still can't get to 95%, which is very strange. I use an 8-head ultrasonic humidifier for an 8x8-foot greenhouse. It doesn't make sense in my experience, I guess I am doing something wrong or the humidostat has some problems on its readings. Thanks Gary for your help!

overnight temps get cooler (50s) and day time is around 80s - come to the mountains! yes and winter can be -15F Mushrooms are difficult to grow in warmer regions because there is less of a temp variance/humidity variance to produce pinsets and more bugs. It is possible though just other issues to deal with 🍄❤️

Is it a mutation, Or phenotypic plasticity to its nutritional environment and atmosphere conditions
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi14 күн бұрын
my experience is that it is a mutation since if you clone this, go back to culture and refruit it will carry these traits again. I think phenotypes express themselves once during a flush and can vary throughout the grow room but if I go back to the mother culture it will give similar results.

Evacuated solar tubes running an underfloor heating loop?
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi14 күн бұрын
what is the cost of something like that?
@LeonPhythian6914 күн бұрын
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi not that much considering the ability to continue producing all year. Extremely efficient system, too, as you wouldn't need a big pump to keep it circulating. The main issue is the storage, depending on the square footage of your space and ensuring you are using the excess energy(heat) produced in the warmer months is used for other tasks. Which you could, in essence, use to produce electricity when not being used to heat the place. This type of system is something I've been weighing up for my own set up. We were originally going to just use horse manure to heat the water, as when it breaks down it produces a ton of heat, so a similar idea of running a cycled loop through the base of the muck heap leading to a storage cylinder for heat storage then using a smal wind turbine to pump the heated water through the underfloor system. The great thing about that option is there are a lot of stables near us and all we would have to do is collect the waste to keep it running. But the evacuated solar tubes are a lot less labour intensive and passive underfloor heat is a great way to ambient maintain a good temp, especially in larger areas where the mass of the floor itself helps regulate that again the only issue is the space needed to store the heated water, but I would have a look into it a small array of panels would easily heat your space.
