I always thought for a boat to be a yawl the mizzen mast must be aft of the rudder stock, is that not the case?
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx9 күн бұрын
I think we have broadened our understanding nowadays. The yawl mizzen is for balance and steering whereas a ketch mizzen is for power and extra sail area.

@@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx Back in the 70s an old Adelaide boat builder down at the Port river docks was who told me about that difference. I've never heard it mentioned by anyone else. It's interesting how things are believed, like me hearing 1 person say it so I believed it. being he was a respected old school boat builder who'd worked there from 10 years of age
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx9 күн бұрын
There's still much debate on the topic but I think the designer Phil Bolger describes it best: "This is all arbitrary. The functional difference is that a ketch depends on her mizzen for a significant part of the power that drives the boat, whereas in a yawl the mizzen serves as a balancing and maneuvering sail."

Gorgeous boat. I normally don't like boats with offset bowsprits, but that's just my ocd kicking up.

Thanks for this video! I have a question for you @SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx: can you plug the epropulsion motor to a battery while you are running it? Or does it stop working while charging? That would cut the recharge time down by a lot?
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx12 күн бұрын
Yes you can.
@GuySkellenger10 күн бұрын
@@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx They really should make that clear in the marketing of the elite. I bought the elite and their battery charger just in case you can charge while running or hook a separate battery just to operate the Elite with a dead internal battery

Great job guys look like a new boat with the way she performs now with the new set of sail, rudder blade and vang. Just the new sails on their own looks like you have picked up more speed. The internal mods look great the foam was originally used for buoyancy in older boats.
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx21 күн бұрын
Correct, however Com-Pac added the foam in the bow of the CP16 to sound deaden, not for buoyancy in this instance.
@ShaunBuckner21 күн бұрын

Hi guys great video In up to 30 knots very cool. Sailing heavy weather can be a lot of fun you can balance the boat by pointing up into the wind on heavy gusts it’s not an easy task but can be done with practice. I have a few questions that may assist you with some of your concerns. Your main looks like it’s end boom sheeted do you have a traveller? I think you mentioned a vang will be very useful. Also your spreaders do they sweep back at all? Is the main sail a typical cut for your class ? Also mast rake, rake the mast backwards towards the stern will remove Lee helm very dangerous Lee helm. You can try 5mm at a time backwards I recommend making notes as you go. Very nice to see you enjoying your sailing around Hobart. Shaun.

Great video, showing the workings of a great little design, the Compac 16! I am a fan of enjoying being out on the water in small boats and being able to overnight is key! You rightly point out the value of a cockpit tent to enhance accomodations! The cockpit becomes the "Living room" and transforms a small boat! Poo demo was entertaining to boot! Thanks for the effort! Now go wash your mouth out! Lol! AllthebestRoy

Love the videos, I'm looking at building a scamp in a couple of years and look forward to some fun trips, a side note on the Trangia snuffers, if you take the wind shield with the pot grip its easy to come in from windward and put the snuffers on with no risk of burns. Happy travels.
