Wow, its kidna crazy to see how much the tcg used "his or her" instead of "their" back in the day. What a mouthful.

I have a newbie question, and I'm not sure where to look this up. At 41:43, there's a Golduck card shown. Does it do water damage because the card is water, or does it do psychic damage because the energy needed is psychic?

11:07 I mainly played legacy with a plasma Lugia deck and a plasma Tornadus deck. Silver Mirror shut me down hard and I had very few ways to deal with it. I would've killed for this card in my deck.

I love the premise..but I think them being bricks just handicapped them too much. If they would've had some sort of secondary ability, like maybe play as an item to draw 1 card or something, I could've seen them being really fun and used a bunch..but instead they took too much of an investment to just give you a big liability on your field.

competitively they were bad but the art is insane! Probably my favorite artwork from Pokémon.

Multi part cards like this would have fared better if they had inherent discard abilities, or functioned out of an Extra Deck like Yu-Gi-Oh so having one piece in your prize cards didn't brick the entire mechanic.

There's really good alternatives to oranguru btw. My favorite is bunnelby, it can recycle 2 cards, which is enough for a lot of infinites still, even if you lose out on some of them, and it's more flexible than guru cuz it can also accelerate a mill plan if needed, which is useful. It does have 60 less HP, but that tends to not matter too much. And it also has the option of recycling a single card which can be useful too.

Interesting how you mention that; "Fossil Pokemon finally got a way to search their basics in Sun and Moon". When there was a card like that all the way back in the original Generation I sets. Fossil Excavation, which let you add one Mysterious Fossil from your deck or discard pile. The only problem? That card is Japanese exclusive. Wizards of the Coast brilliant idea of localizing the "Vending Series"; three entire mini-sets totaling to over a hundred cards, many direct support or counters to existing cards and strategies; was to drip feed them to us, over many, many years as Black Star league promos. I believe we got like six, before their license ran out, well into Generation 2.

That Sableye has got to be the most blatently overpowered card I've ever seen. I'm surprised I've never heard of it before this video. Every deck must have been running it when it was legal, right? Since its Supporter attack is colorless, and every deck could use an extra supporter on turn 1, it could go in any deck, AND you would have to run it to counter your opponent opening with it. The ability for dark decks to sometimes randomly win the game on turn 1 just seems like an extra bonus at that point. What were they thinking when they designed this card???

The Fossil Card itself is a staple, mostly because it serves as an active pokemon that does not produce a prize card when KOd. It's is essential in some of the best strategies of its time.. especially defensive stall based decks and midrange types.

There's one trainer in the Pokemon Gameboy game that would use them to make a wigglypuff do the wave very effective quickly. Still more annoying than a serious strategy though

I know you did a "Bottom 10" video for these, but considering only around half a dozen of them were playable, you should do a Failed Mechanic video for Prism Star cards. (I also think you could do a Failed Mechanic video for Radiant Pokemon, as even fewer of these saw play after the Scarlet & Violet block started.)

Rattata is so good! I remember being young beating all my friends with no budget just using my older brother’s leftover cards. I would use only the basic cards that had 1 energy 20 damage attacks (rattata, machop, staryu) along with Raticate for extra hp. Pair these with lots of trainer cards (bill, gust of wind, plus power, energy removal, super energy removal, oak, etc) and very few energies needed and you could get offense going very quickly. My friends and their expensive holo cards and slower builds would just die because they couldn’t execute the strategy optimally or fast enough. It was amazing. I was the best player on the block with compete garbage deck, not a single star card and barely any diamonds. It was hilarious! I remember they would laugh at my ratatta and then lose hard

i loved when Mysterious Fossil was just budget Clefairy Doll. Between WoTC and NINTENDO i think i disliked NINTENDO more for literally completely changing cards even when they specifically made a card to allow the original card to stay how it was. They gave us "Mom's Kindness" and it was "Draw two cards." Masterball was not "Masterball" and "Pokemon center" was not "Pokemon center." i got so sick of the complete overhaul of already established cards that they could had left alone. i think the closest WotC came to something similar in vein was Oubliette. Which was literally just refining the language on the card to make it more understandable while being true to it's original intended effect.

My only interaction in any match with Fossils was a really funny thing that happened to me in TCG Pocket about a week ago: I had Old Amber on my Bench with iirc a Ralts in the active spot. I got stupidly lucky with getting enough energy and my Aerodactyl out just in time for the opponent's lone Charizard ex to KO my Ralts. Aerodactyl's move in TCGP is a coin flip to discard the opponent's active. I won the flip and therefore the game without any knockouts. I literally won with a scoring of 0-1
